Whoops! New Senate nominee Carly Fiorina (R-CA) was caught in an unfortunate open mic incident today, mocking her rival Sen. Barbara Boxer's hair, complaining about Fox's Sean Hannity and even talking about cheeseburgers she wished she'd eaten the night before.
Fiorina, who won a 3-way primary last night, was preparing for an interview with CNN affiliate KXTV this morning and chatting with her aides. In a several-minute chat with the camera rolling that CNN posted online, Fiorina mocks Boxer's hairdo. Laughing, Fiorina tells her staff that someone had seen Boxer on television and "said what everyone says, 'God what is that hair?' So yesterday!" But she also questioned a decision by fellow Republican Meg Whitman to appear on Hannity so soon after winning the GOP nomination for governor.
"I find it really surprising that on the first day of the general Meg Whitman is going on Sean Hannity," Fiorina said, while reading her BlackBerry. "I think it's bizarre ... I think it's a very bad choice actually. You know how he is."
Fiorina alluded to Whitman avoiding the press during the primary, saying, "Why after saying no to all these people would you go on Sean Hannity?" Later she added, "Sean Hannity is not an easy interview."
She also talked about the cheeseburgers some campaign folks had been eating on election night, noting, "I didn't eat last night."
In a statement to CNN, Fiorina's campaign dismissed the comments as "early morning small talk." It would seem like sort of a no-no for a Republican to speak ill of Hannity, but Fiorina is trying to win in California, after all. It's hardly the worst thing that's been caught on an open microphone, though not what you want to have happen your first day as the party's standard-bearer. Watch:

Even BEFORE, she had bad man-short corporate hair. I (sort of) admired her for letting it grow in gray, but looks like she's gone back to the bad colorist she used before the chemo.
This isn't even the pot calling the kettle black. Boxer's hair is fine ... it's Fiorina's that's "so yesterday."

I'm sure people will spin this in all sorts of different directions. I wouldn't say it's a sign of anything other than the sorts of concerns these candidates face on a day-to-day basis (due in no small part to the media's proclivity for turning politics into soap opera/reality show gossip).

A couple of thoughts on this.
1. it seems odd that CNN would post this. It seems like a complete set-up in a sort of below the belt sucker punch sort of way.
2. I'm sure every politician and quasi-celebrity have to go through this sort of wait all of the time so I'm probably going to read too much into this. But:
- it is interesting that the first thing she does is check her Twitter account (I assume) and when she gets some positive feedback she puts it away.
- the cheeseburger talk seemed like an attempt to relate personally to her staff but it was so awkward that it makes me doubt she has very good personal relationships with them
- her immediate staff seem like fake friends; sort of a high school clique
- I wonder why she spoke so much about Hannity? He would otherwise be a breeze for her. Would she ever go on the PBS Newshour or MSNBC? Doubtful.
- It is sort of early to be taking personal shots at your opponent. Carly is going to "lose it" in public before November
- How come she didn't talk politics? I don't think she is interested in public service. She doesn't care. There was a lot going on in California and politics around the country yesterday and all she can talk about is Meg going on Hannity and Senator Boxer's hair? Give me a break.
I'm glad Carly is the GOP candidate and not Tom Campbell. Boxer has some vulnerability but not by the failed HP CEO who has moved further and further right over the past 3 months. Comparing the two, moderates will join liberals in supporting Boxer.

Even more curious. The reason they wouldn't repost it is because it is sneak attack / gotcha journalism. It doesn't seem OK from an ethical perspective. If CNN wants to be a news leader - and I am not sure they do - they wouldn't do this sort of thing. The fact that they did, makes this more newsworthy for smaller news outlets like TPM. If CNN didn't post it, I doubt that TPM would have.

I hate to be the one to bring this up but, if I was a cancer patient like Carly is and was losing my hair, the last thing I'd be doing is trashing someone elses hair. By the way, Boxer was on Rachel Maddow last week I believe and her hair looked great. It's typical of GOP women who have to be more concerned with their looks than their ability to govern. They have a recent past of style over substance. (See that idiot Sarah Palin).

I don't care if Boxer's hair looks like Farrah Fawcett's at her peak. Boxer's "ability to govern" and her actual performance as a Senator----along with the performance of people like Harry Reid, Chuck U. Schumer, Leaky Leahy, and nearly all other Dems---are what have put the U.S. on the road to where Greece and California are. The liberal dream of a utopian welfare state is just that---a dream. Boxer and as many Dems as possible must be repealed. Is it November yet?

Do you pay ANY attention to the news? California is PART of the U.S., but California is not THE U.S.----any more than North America is the U.S. because the U.S. is part of North America.
Greece is a welfare/entitlement state that is in big debt/financial trouble. Its huge spending could not be paid for and cannot be sustained. Greece had to be bailed out by Europe and the U.S.
California is a welfare/entitlement state that has been dominated by a Democrat legislature. California is in big debt/financial trouble. Its huge spending could not be paid for and cannot be sustained. It will either have to cut spending (it won't), default on its debts (maybe), or seek and get a bailout from Obama and Democrats in Washington (most likely).
The U.S. is a welfare/entitlement state that under Democrats is hellbent on "fundamentally transforming" the U.S. into a European style socialist entitlement state. The U.S. is in big debt/financial trouble---and Obama and Democrats in Congress make Bush deficits seem small. Unless Democrats are "repealed", the U.S. WILL become Greece and California within the next 10 years (maybe sooner). So far, China is financing our huge debt obligations, but at some point they will either demand high interest rates or will stop buying our debt as it becomes more risky to count on repayment.
That's what I was "blathering" about. Jeeeez! GetInformed, not msinformed.

By the way, I suppose you think Greece and California are doing just fine and that Obama and Dems are positively on the right track in taking the country to where California and Greece are.

Well in my opinion based on the comments you cited I just have to say that all those folks have you dead to rights--nailed your carcass right to the wall in fact. But what I'm waiting for is an explanation as to how a "former liberal" can be sitting around vacantly wondering how "liberals think". So to conclude you are either full of crap or...you're just full of crap. Any way you're two days late and plenty short. We have moved on from your mindless tirades to more important topics.

If you don't care about my "negative rants" then don't read them or reply to them-----unless you have something of SUBSTANCE to say....which you NEVER do. For instance, neither you nor Marinus addressed my highly substantive (though "negative") observation about the situations of Greece, California, and the U.S. under "progressive" leadership. DO you believe that the U.S. should continue down the path of Greece and California? No need for you to respond, since you probably don't even know what is going on in Greece, California, and the U.S. and you no doubt do not WANT to know. Here is a further update that you can ignore:

You have joined Chameleon and Marinus as official members of the substance free (comment-wise--I am not sure about your collective drug status) "ignorance is bliss" club. Your reply is laughable. It is I who "exposes" myself to diverse points of view, who reads and analyzes current events from multiple sources, and posts comments and replies that address issues on a substantive level. I see none of that with you, Marinus, or Chameleon. I will gain respect for your opinions when I see the next (first) reply from you that has ANY substance to it. You could start by filling in my "ignorance" about Greece, California, and the same path that Democrats/"progressives" have put the U.S. on. As Professor Kingsfield in the Paper Chase used to say to his students: "Fill the room with your brilliance". Your "for you it is" comment has the same level of brilliance as Pee Wee Herman's line "I know you are, but what am I?"

LOL...right and the essance of your critical thinking is to post a "highly substantive...observation" from a British tabloid newspaper "aimed at the newly-literate 'lower-middle class market'" and you really believe that we should take you seriously? Mail online is the internet outlet for the publication "The Daily Mail" a British, daily middle market tabloid newspaper. First published in 1896 by Lord Northcliffe, it is the United Kingdom's second biggest-selling daily newspaper after The Sun. Its sister paper, The Mail on Sunday was launched in 1982. Scottish and Irish editions of the paper were launched in 1947 and 2006 respectively. The Daily Mail was Britain's first daily newspaper aimed at the newly-literate "lower-middle class market resulting from mass education, combining a low retail price with plenty of competitions, prizes and promotional gimmicks", and the first British paper to sell a million copies a day. It was, from the outset, a newspaper for women, being the first to provide features especially for them, and is still the only British newspaper whose readership is more than 50% female. You're a fuckin' idiot.

So what if the Daily Mail is blah blah blah? I do not see you dealing in ANY way with the thrust of the story. I agree that Whitman's hair is worse, but having died her hair after wearing gray when in came back in after chemo, Carly is making a play for surpassing Meg in the bad-hair category.
Meg's would look OK if she would cut some bangs. But as a wag once said, you can tell a high-tone woman because she wears her hair the same way she did in finishing school. She sent an incredible mailer (it kept unfolding and unfolding) with photos from her life, childhood to present, and aside from it being shorter than it was when she was a teen, there is NO difference.
With that blank blonde hair, including eyebrows, and ultra fair skin, she really needs help from Carmody from What Not to Wear.

Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman are proof that if you don't sufficiently tax CEOs, they waste everyone's time using their cash looking for something new to do.

Actually Carly should hope everyone focuses on her hair and not on her record.
"In April 2009, the business magazine web site Condé Nast Portfolio listed Fiorina as one of "The 20 Worst American CEOs of All Time", characterizing the HP-Compaq merger as a widely regarded failure, and citing the halving of HP's stock value under Fiorina's tenure."

So Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman won their respective GOP primaries last night. I don't intend this post to be a political grandstand, but I have to ask: what on earth are California Republicans thinking?

Self-candidates are about all the Republicans can come up with....in California, at least.
Of course, Meg and Carly think they can run to the right in California....and saturate the airwaves while driving up their negatives and the voters will forget they ran to the right of fascists, and now are totally reasonable moderates now that they have fed the Republican Beast.
Having Palin in her ads will come back to haunt Carly, as will Meg spending all her Ebay money on buying the election.

There may be thousands of people who think this was accidental. After all these years with digital cameras equipped with audio in all our hands and video editing in our computers how can we be so gullible about the use of media? Didn't "reality" TV give us at least a clue as to the future of politics?
Fiorina will get coverage for the "gaffe". Fiorina will get coverage for the "leaning to the middle." Fiorina will get coverage for the "mending of the fences" with Hannity pre-November. Fiorina will get coverage the first time Senator Boxer changes her hairstyle, a certainty. The issues will not be discussed.
Is anyone paying attention?

I really hope Chris Matthews doesn't pick up on the Boxer v. Fiorina "Hair" issue.
Today (Wednesday) he tried to make a point about how Nikki Haley (SC Gov candidate) dresses "cosmopolitan" while Sarah Palin dresses "western". Michelle Bernard and Joan Walsh cringed but were able to pivot out of trouble quickly.
I don't understand how he stays on the air

Glad I missed that. MSNBC needs to tell Matthews to keep his stupid analysis of women to himself. He would never intentionally be sexist and I think he would hate the thought of being sexist, but he says the most ridiculous sexist shit.

Who care's about her hair? What matters is that she's a lying, worthless, Republican hack who's experience in creating jobs entailed firing 26,000 people in one fell swoop back in 2001. She's a corporate elitist who lives in her own bubble, clueless about the travails other people face. Boxer may have the personality of one of a freight train, but she's done everything in her ability to ensure that working class families aren't thrown out on the streets, that back alley abortions are firmly in the past, and that all people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation are treated with respect. Carly's a hack who's suddenly embraced all the pet issues of the right in order to get through the primary. Now watch her try and squirm out of her prior cro-magnon positions. She'll probably lose, but I hope she loses realllly badly.
