BP isn't standing alone with one foot on the ground and the other in its mouth. Since the spill began in April, Republicans have demonstrated an exceptional tendency to blurt out their inconvenient beliefs about the disaster and the federal response. And we're not talking about backbenchers here -- the dirty talk has come from their most powerful and visible members. From Capitol Hill to the Gulf Coast, we bring you, in chronological order, the top six GOP oil spill slip-ups.

1. Rand Paul
He's since gone into hiding, likely on NRSC orders, but back when the Kentucky Senate hopeful was still flapping his gums (to hilarious effect) on national television, he let slip that he wanted the Obama administration to leave BP aloooooone!

"This sort of, you know 'I'll put my boot heel on the throat of BP,' I think that sounds really un-American in his criticism of business," Paul said on Good Morning America last month.

Watch:

2. Michele Bachmann
Everyone's favorite Minnesota congresswoman took the opportunity of time on the House floor to rip the administration earlier this month, saying that the government was "nowhere to be found" after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded...except, of course, they actually arrived within hours. The kicker though is that Bachmann, scourge of socialism, wondered out loud why the government hadn't "commandeered" privately-owned boats to "deal with that oil plume as it was coming up to the water."

3. Sarah Palin
The former half-term Alaska Governor tried to capitalize on the spill with an unusually awkward "I told you so." Palin tweeted out to "extreme greenies" to gloat that the spill vindicates "Drill, Baby, Drill." With a caveat.

"Extreme Greenies:see now why we push"drill, baby, drill"of known reserves&promising finds in safe onshore places like ANWR? Now do you get it?"

Of course, her constant refrain had actually been that America should allow drilling just about everywhere right away. The phrase "Drill, baby, drill!" wasn't shouted with caveats.

4. Haley Barbour
The Mississippi Governor might not suffer politically for it, but he's repeatedly insisted that the oil spill isn't worth fretting over. It "isn't anything like Exxon Valdez," Barbour claims, comparing the crude itself to caramel mousse, toothpaste, and the fuel sheen surrounding speed boats.

5. John Boehner
House Republicans are so accustomed to going to great pains to remain in the good graces of the Chamber of Commerce that their leader even aligned himself Chamber president Tom Donohue over whether taxpayers should pitch in to help BP pay for clean up and damages. That lasted about six hours.

"I think the people responsible in the oil spill--BP and the federal government--should take full responsibility for what's happening there," Boehner said at his weekly press conference on June 10. Later that day, his office was forced to publicly say Boehner believes BP should pay for everything, and last Sunday, he took to the morning shows to back the concept of lifting the $75 million cap on BP's exposure. Still no word on whether that means he'll whip Republicans to vote for that.

6. Joe Barton
The House Republicans' top energy guy didn't get the memo that BP has no (public) friend in the GOP. Yesterday, at a hearing with BP CEO Tony Hayward, Barton accused the Obama administration of perpetrating a shakedown by pressuring BP to set aside $20 billion to cover expected damages. But that was the least of it because, on that point, conservative pundits and the Republican Study Committee fully backed him up. It was his apology to Hayward that unleashed a tsunami of negative press and set leadership scrambling to contain the floods.

"I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown, in this case a $20 billion shakedown," Barton said. "I'm only speaking for myself, I'm not speaking for anybody else. But I apologize. I do not want to live in a country where any time a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong, is subject to to some sort of political pressure that is, again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown. So I apologize."

Then he (sort of) apologized for apologizing. Then he apologized again, falling on his sword even as party leaders were throwing him under the bus. No word on whether he plans to move to a country where BP could get away with something like this.

Future apologies from Barton:

1) Rep. Joe Barton (R-Big Oil) apologizes to the South for the Union winning the Civil War and for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1965. "I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that the government can tell a private corporation they cannot refuse service to minorities. I do not want to live in a country like that!"

2) Rep. Joe Barton (R-Corporate Crooks) has now apologized to the family of deceased Enron CEO Ken Lay. "I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that the government can hound a good, honest businessman to his death. I do not want to live in a country like that!"

3) Rep. Joe Barton apologizes as well to former Sen. Larry Craig (R-In The Closet): "I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that this fine upholder of conservative values is hounded out of government by the liberal media, simply because of how he uses the restroom. I do not want to live in a country like that!"

4) Rep. Joe Barton apologizes to Bernie madoff for government intrusion on his money making "enterprise". Re. Joe Barton especially apoligizes for government seizing Bernie Madoff's belongings and selling them to create a "slush fund" to compensate Bernie Madoff's "investors".

5) Rep. Joe Barton apolozes to Adolf Hitler for government overreach of sending troops to derstroy his dream of world dominantion. Everyone should have the right to achieve their dreams, so Re. Joe Barton apologizes to Adolf Hitler and the "victims" of the Nuremburg Trials.

REPUGS =

GROUPTHINK: A type of thought within a deeply cohesive in-group whose members try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas.

“A mode of thinking that people engage in when they are deeply involved in a cohesive in-group, when the members' strivings for unanimity override their motivation to realistically appraise alternative courses of action”.

Individual creativity, uniqueness, and independent thinking are lost in the pursuit of group cohesiveness, as are the advantages of reasonable balance in choice and thought that might normally be obtained by making decisions as a group.

During groupthink, members of the group avoid promoting viewpoints outside the comfort zone of consensus thinking. A variety of motives for this may exist such as a desire to avoid being seen as foolish, or a desire to avoid embarrassing or angering other members of the group.

Groupthink may cause groups to make hasty, irrational decisions, where individual doubts are set aside, for fear of upsetting the group’s balance. The term is frequently used pejoratively, in hindsight. Additionally, it is difficult to assess the quality of decision making in terms of outcomes all the time, but one can almost always evaluate the quality of the decision-making process.

YOU make a good point = however my post wasn't
talking about "their followers"

BUT rather, about Republicans themselves ~ in
this day and age (Unlike the sort associated
with a WISE man named Dwight Eisenhower)

ONE joins such a party due to a "lemming mentality"
... and preference to follow orders, rather than
lead.

I'VE a colleague who is researching and writing a
book about the frightening syndrome the BUSH
family exhibited (to put in a nutshell = finding
those "minority" professionals, such as the memory
deficient Alberto Gonzales, and supporting them, with
an implied motive that "You should be GLAD that whitey
is on your side ... now, sign this oath in BLOOD that
you'll do whatever we command, in the future" ... a
true pact with LUCIFER).

Professor Irving Janis was a BRILLIANT man who (George
Orwell would have approved) saw all this coming, years
back = the plague of GROUP THINK. Although scholars and
persons of professional accomplishment / elevated intelligence
quotient may want to LAUGH at these lemmings,

WE shouldn't ~ in the same way that Germans did not
take Adolph seriously ... until it was too damn late.

It is a though these guys got together and planned how to be totally stupid in unison. They are so tone deaf about the suffering of the folks on the Gulf Coast, fishmen, and people whose livlihod depends on a clean ocean. It is aazing that their needd to not offend big oil or whatever it is, so blinds their understanding of the suffering of Gulf Coast folks. These guys, though Republcans, surely do NOT represent me whatsoever. Their calous mouthigs will end up driving many of us right out of the party. There is an old religious song that says,
Except I am moved with compassion,
How dweleth Thy Spirit in me,
In word and in deed, burnig love is my need,

I am just wating for these so called Christins to have just a smidgeon of compasson for all those whose lives are so torn by this disgusting spill brought on by BP's total disregard for our country and our environment! For goodness sakes, just who do these guys represent?

Well ... great post, and

"Bobby" (a/k/a Payush)

Jindal has been a source of both hilarity
and amazement to myself and a few colleagues,
ever since

He LOST the Louisiana governorship to Kathleen
(Babineaux) Blanco ... Jindal's relatives are
of course immigrants from INDIA (also by and
large, ALL Democrats !!)

But he was no doubt "put up" by that branch
of Repugs (I call them the 'lemming recruitment
branch') who are trying desperately to intermingle
a DARK FACE, here and there amongst their SEA of
EGGSHELL WHITE (Not too many of course).

ONE of the most hilarious moments on television (I
have that burned to CD and shared with many) was
when Bobby "Howdy Doody" Jindal gave that side
splitting 'rebuttal' to the State of the Union by
President Obama.

He appeared like a TWIT and spoke as someone who was perhaps
two I.Q. points above having a DROOL issue from the side of
his mouth. SAD! Persons like this would be an arguable theory
why lobotomies used to be so popular (LMAO).

NOW, poor little Payush has his OWN Gulf disaster to deal with,
and is doing the usual LOUSY job of it (One minute he criticizes
Obama, i.e. bites the hand that may be feeding him ... the NEXT,
he is crying those Crocodile tears, begging for FED FUNDS).

I will watch his career (Ha!) with interest over the years, but
suspect this will be yet another SELF IMPLOSION. IVY

P.S. Anybody heard = just HOW MUCH ($$) Limbaugh's
new "wife" is being paid, for her services as
a drug mule???

I think republicans are more prone to accept things on belief rather than evidence.

Thus is you have a belief like "corporations = good", "government = bad", you can get tied up in knots trying to stay true to your beliefs in the face of contradictory evidence.

In contrast, Obama seems to be evidence driven. This can be aggravating if we see him move away from previously held beliefs (ending rendition, closing Bagram/Gitmo) based on evidence that we cannot see.

This leads to a bit of a paradox...

In a representative democracy, you elect people you like and then trust that they will do the best job they can. By and large, liberals are more trusting that their leaders are doing the best job they can. Whereas conservatives have been using every contrary vote a congressman has done as evidence that they've "sold out".

That's the divide. Liberals believe in people and Conservatives believe in principles.

Yeah, my wife thinks I'm too Pollyanna-ish too...

But while liberals call them talking points, in their *own* minds, conservatives call them principles.

The point is that they don't easily change their beliefs, even in the face of evidence so in that respect, "principles" fits better than "talking points".

No, liberals believe in evidence and conservatives believe in ideology. Liberal leaders have to earn trust by showing that they are willing to fight for the things they said they stand for and they have to show that they are capable. Their support levels change gradually. It's a step function for the conservatives -- the politician is all golden and can get away with murder until he crosses his base on something which may be quite small -- then, in a step functon -- he's a bad guy on the other side.

Reply | Flag Abuse

June 19, 2010 6:08 AM    in reply to AJM

Step function eh? That sounds about right.

Another point may be that liberals may be more realistic. Even if their leaders take the occasional centrist position, they can still say it is better than having a republican in there.

The *current* republican base is more interested in ideological purity than pragmatism.

More precisely, I think these days, progressives are better at resisting what some like Julian Sanchez are calling "epistemic closure". (And this began as a criticism of conservatives by conservatives!) I think that we liberal/progressives will stay on top only as long as we resist "epistemic closure". We could certainly fall back into dogma...

( no pun intended ) The teabagging idiots probably are just now realizing how they were being had by Dick Armey, Bart Breitbart, Sarah Palin, and the rest of those phoney " patriots ", when the time is at hand for fellow americans to feel the pain of other struggling americans in the worst oil spill in american history, we have republican congressmen like Joe Barton of Texas and Michele Bachmann taking the side of the oil giant BP, and not the american people of the Gulf Coast, and the Eleven men lost on that sunken BP oil rig. Lets remember these congressmen and others like them in the November elections and vote their butts out of office.

These people have no sense of shame and no sense of decency for the American public. You know Japanese samurai would rip their bellies open for lesser crimes willingly. These folks are pathetic.

These GOP gaffes undoubtedly provide moments of hilarity and four-square samples of sublime ignorance, but they are also telling about the Christian-Constitutional conservative underbelly. The public personas of these people, Bachmann, Palin, Barton, Boenher and Barbour (undecided about Rand Paul) seem to function as Empty Vessels into which the Base imbues belief, fact-free and kooky as is might be. Take Bachmann, when she got her JD at Oral Robert U in Oklahoma, she must have been introduced to numerous post-Battle-of-Hastings legal concepts. No cognitive dissonance with her modern image, however, even if she seems to be spewing crazy-talk. I think this is hard for educated liberals to grasp: there is a breed of conservative today ready to project belief and world-view with the mere recitation of select code terms. It would be as if Dead Heads went to the concert, Jerry Garcia got up with his guitar, and then everybody imagined the solo -- and it was great!

Another piece of serious journalism from TPM the new National Enquirer.

Political gaffes are nothing compared to the lax government oversight that allowed this disaster to occur. While most are deservedly pointing fingers at BP, this disaster might not have happened if the government agencies charged with regulating this industry were not corrupted.

Meanwhile TPM in there never ending journey to document rethuglican hijinx lets the real culprits off scott free. Where's the criticism of our change leader and his inability if not refusal to correct corruption until long after the crime has been committed.

This site is worthless for those seeking objective and unbiased information.

Just like when Haley covered for Bush's ineptitude by saying Katrina was a Cat-1 storm until it was too late to prepare:

BARBOUR: I really don't. And I think it's very unfair for the federal government, for you to say we knew this was a great powerful storm. This was a category 1 hurricane when it hit Florida. Now that's the truth.

M. O'BRIEN: Governor, it was a category 5 storm.

BARBOUR: The federal government...

M. O'BRIEN: A category 5 storm when it was...

BARBOUR: No, it was a category 1 -- it was a category 1 storm when it hit Florida. It was a category 5 storm a few hours before it came ashore.

M. O'BRIEN: No, no, Governor Barbour...

BARBOUR: The federal government have been tremendous partners in this. They have helped...

M. O'BRIEN: Governor Barbour, surely there was enough knowledge in advance that this was a huge killer storm a matter of days, not hours, before it ever struck landfall. And it seems to me the military...

BARBOUR: Now, Miles, if this is an interview or an argument, I don't care. But if you want to let me tell you what I think, I will.

Republicans represent the economic interests of the wealthy.
So for these Earth-hating shills... a gaffe would be to actually tell the truth.
The fact that their comments do not resonate with the majority of people simply means that they have not consulted their "frame-meister" before opening their pie-holes.

Then again....maybe BP's Three Mile Island has actually stumped the great-one.
It's simply un-framable

You hit several good points there. I have one problem with your post though. If your calling, Luntz, the Great One, I believe you've overstated his stature. Going with your pie-hole reference, I'd call him , The Pie-hole Pilot.

“What I find interesting is how after Joe Barton apologized to BP, the GoBP and fellow travelers like Fox are deserting BP like rats deserting a sinking ship. As if most everyone (aside from Paul and Bachman now) are attempting to distance themselves from oil bill's comments. Ap has a story on how there is even a new website for Joe Barton.

What is interesting is that NYT thinks Barbour may be getting good publicity and he could be a Presidential candidate in 2012 because he is acting like a "LEADER"!!!

"Mr. Barbour’s performance could help shift his political image from that of an insider party boss to an out-front crisis manager — and possible presidential candidate in 2012. "

Obama's golf outing on saturday (after friday baseball outing) is the real gaffe. We have a crisis, and Obama goes to parties, fundraisers, baseball and basketball games. He has played more golf than he has made trips to the Gulf to oversee this mess. If only the spill had happened at Augusta national, Obama would be all over it.

I guess Palin thinks everybody is as unbelievably stupid as she is. Comments like these thirty years ago would have instantly destroyed her public credibility. Best she could have done is make it on Saturday Night Live with Jesse Jackson;..."the question is moot".

Wow, Rahm Emanuel actually said something that not only makes sense but that any sane person can agree with--and shows the title of this article to be badly composed, to be WRONG.

These were NOT Gaffes, each one of these people spoke from prepared remarks.

These are the GOP Talking Points.

This is their ideology.

Corporations above all, before country, and above citizens.
