Hillary Clinton Expects Iran ‘To Pull Some Stunt In The Next Couple Of Days’
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters Sunday that she expects continuing trouble from Iran. “I fully expect Iran to pull some stunt in the next couple of days because they know that sanctions are on the way,” said Clinton, also adding: “I think we will see something coming up in the next 24 to 48 hours where Iran says, ‘Wait a minute, wait a minute, look at what we’re going to do now.”
Obama’s Day Ahead
President Obama will receive the presidential daily briefing at 10 a.m. ET, and the economic daily briefing at 10:30 a.m. ET. He will met at 11 a.m. with Cabinet embers, to discuss the administration’s response to the BP oil spill. He will meet at 1:15 p.m. ET with senior advisers. He will depart from the White House at 2:10 p.m. ET, and from Andrews Air Force Base at 2:40 p.m. ET, arriving at 4:15 p.m. ET in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At 7 p.m. ET, he will deliver the commencement speech at Kalamazoo Central High School. He will depart from Grand Rapids at 9:45 p.m. ET, arriving back at Andrews Air Force Base at 11:15 p.m. ET, and at the White House at 11:45 p.m. ET.
Biden’s Day Ahead
Vice President Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden have embarked on a tour this week of Egypt, Kenya and South Africa. The Bidens are in Egypt today, where the Vice President will meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. In the afternoon, the Bidens will depart for Kenya.
Crowded Agenda Awaits Clinton In Latin America
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton flew to Latin America, and will be attending today’s annual meeting of the Organization of American States in Lima, Peru. The issues on Clinton’s agenda will include the political status of Honduras, the new anti-illegal immigration law in Arizona, and Clinton’s efforts to build support for sanctions against Iran.
Gates: Afghan Resignations ‘Obviously An Internal Matter’
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates played down the impact of recent resignations in the Afghan government. “It’s obviously an internal matter for the Afghans,” said Gates, who also added: “We have a number of capable ministers that we’re working with, and I would just hope that President Karzai will appoint in the place of those who have left people of equal caliber.”
White House Presses Congress For Financial Reform In Time For Summit
The New York Times reports: “As Congressional negotiators begin this week to merge two bills overhauling the financial system, the White House wants them to reach an agreement before President Obama leaves for a Group of 20 meeting this month in Toronto. The administration has tried to use the summit meeting to foster a sense of urgency among lawmakers. It thinks a deal would give Mr. Obama greater leverage in efforts to persuade other countries to support proposals like a global bank tax and higher capital standards for the largest financial institutions.”
Specter Posse Gallops Back To GOP
Roll Call reports: “A cadre of influential Republicans long loyal to Arlen Specter have parted ways, politically speaking, with the party-switching Senator, a process that has accelerated since his defeat in the Pennsylvania Democratic primary. David Urban, Specter’s chief of staff from 1997 to 2002, when Specter was still a Republican, is leading a coordinated effort to help get former GOP Rep. Pat Toomey elected to the Senate — even though Specter is backing Toomey’s Democratic foe.”
