Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-NV) campaign has a new TV ad in Nevada, attacking Republican nominee Sharron Angle for opposing Social Security and Medicare, and for saying that people collecting Social Security are taking welfare. And what's more, the ad ties into one of the major themes of Reid's general election campaign, casting Angle's ideas as "crazy."
The ad plays audio of Angle, from a radio interview this past May, with accompanying on-screen text: "My grandfather wouldn't even take his Social Security check because he said he was not up for welfare."
The ad then features Edward Coyle, of the labor-affiliated group Alliance for Retired Americans, who calls Angle's remarks "just plain insulting," and also adds: "This is crazy."

Retirement and disability social security are insurance based programs and are not like welfare. The SSI program in Social Security is considered a welfare type program and has asset restrictions. It looks like Angle was lumping the whole program as a welfare one. Most people do not understand the difference between the two aspects of the program.

Exactly right. There's social insurance (Social Security, Medicare), and there's public assistance (i.e., TANF). There's a big difference in how they're administered and who qualifies - and why.
Too bad Sharron Angle either doesn't get it or, more likely, is cynically guessing her "base" doesn't get it and is exploiting their ignorance.
Disgusting.

Her base *literally* gets it - ever notice how many teabaggers are on Social Security or disability? Case in point: Hi Caliber, who enjoys whining (in rap form) about the evils of "socialism" whilst collecting his disability checks. See also anybody holding up a "Keep the Government Out of My Medicare" sign...

Yup, and that point needs to be hammered home, again and again. Social Security is insurance. You pay into it, you draw out of it. Call it "Depression Insurance", tying it in to its origins, and maybe people would be able to grasp it.
There seems to be this consistent theme with the right, that if you pay into something, and there's an agreement that you'll get paid out of it, somehow you become a freeloader if you actually try to collect what you're due (see: HCR debate).

Sharon Angle IS a LUMP (LOL) !!
She and Frau Jan B. in Arizona sure love
to blather on about their MALE progenitors, don't
they? Sad but true however, there may be a lot
of ground shaking in their respective cemeteries,
since these men are
painted as being LIARS, DIM WITS or both.
Looks like my colleague (The geneticist)
wasn't being facetious when he said (with a
straight face)
"The BAD APPLE didn't fall far from the tree!"
(concerning those two women). I would worry
about the DEPTH of their delusions, but
Happily, I feel sure that KARMA will take care of
both (and it won't be pretty). Amused Dr. IVY

Well Harry, you deserve a little luck after having to deal with all the egomaniacs in the Senate, and Sharron is delivering it to your campaign every day. Sharron falls in the too stupid to understand what's going on category. And let's not forget Mr. Vitter, headlining the shameless category. What a crowd.

How do the polls look so far?
And even if Reid is beating Angle in the polls, will Reid get people to vote? We know that teabaggers vote. Angle may be a dangerous dimwit, but if Harry Reid can't get people to the polls, then Angle can keep up the crazy and squeak to a victory.

Obviously the person you replied to, FreeRider
is
Someone who doesn't know a DAMN thing about Nevada,
or our voters. Perhaps he/she/it should STOP worrying
about Harry Reid (who could at his advanced age probably
still BOX the ears off of anyone foolish enough to
challenge him to meet in the ring).
And just go back into hibernation until November; the
dimwits/Toilet Paper Party/Palinites won't be winking
OR smiling then ... although they are SURE to increase the
number of facial TICS and TWITCHES (what I am paid very
well to diagnose). Have a great weekend fabulous TPM

Hi Ivy. I am in such agreement with you. I've been donating to Harry Reid's campaigns for a long long time and each time, he's in the fight of his life and each time he comes out swinging and wins. My money is on Harry.
