Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has a new ad attacking his Republican opponent Sharron Angle, hammering her on the evergreen Democratic issue of Social Security -- and resurrecting an attack against Angle from during the Republican primary, over possible ties to Scientology.
An excerpt is show of Angle saying: "We need to phase Medicare and Social Security out."
"She'd cut benefits for everyone coming into the system," the announcer says. "That's Sharron Angle. First a Scientology plan to give massages to prisoners -- now she wants to get rid of Medicare and Social Security. What's next?"

I'm no adman, but I'd end it differently. I'd do something like:
"What's next? There's more. Stay tuned."
There's so much to cover with Angle, it'd be great to have a rotating series of ads, each one highlighting one or two wacko positions she's taken.

"What's next?" would signal the strategy of constant negativity. Better to be surprised by the weirdness, and not to seem to be capitalizing on it.

Yeah, but the current ad (the clip is above) actually ends with the words "what's next?". Rather than leave that question hang, I'd indicate that we have some answers to what Angle would do.
Also, I don't think of this as a negative ad. A negative ad is one that uses half truths or grossly misrepresents a person's policy pronouncements. These strike me as being totally fair.

Angle's response is simple: combine the two plans and give massages to Social Security recipients. That should be popular.

Sounds to me that someone doesn't know what Scientology is. If you did you would agree with the person whose comment you replied to.

I guess you haven't a clue about Christianity, Judaism or Islam, right? Scientology is no worse than Christianity, Judaism, Islam or any other false faith that believes in invisible sky fairies. Each one of them want your $$$$.

True, but irrelevant.
"Prejudice" implies condemnation without considering individual facts. Given that Scientology's founder said many times he was establishing the institution as a tax shelter, those individual facts matter.
If you want to read assessments of Mr. Hubbard's character by people who knew him directly (albeit fictionalized), see Anthony Boucher's Rocket to the Morgue, and the character Rene Lafayette, or the works of Robert Heinlein containing the character Lazarus Long (one of whose aliases is Lafe Hubert).

Yes they should have.
They could have played a repetition of the video clip in that place - which is shown only once the whole ad. Sestak's clip of Specter "help me get reelected" was shown two or three times in the 30 second ad.
The massage scientology stuff could be a second ad.

The Scientology garbage is a non-issue. It just screams intolerance, but I assume it must poll well in Nv, because both Lowden and now Reid are using it.

The sad part about this ad(sad for Angle) is that the ad is true. It's not a smear or a compilation of doctored footage with cropped audio. Very damning stuff.

Good point. It's good to be reminded that there are some issues which remain "local" -- but do you think it could have been in a different ad?
Also, question for you, is the Yucca mountain thing important anymore?

Well if you lived in Nevada it is. Though we here in washington are happy to see Hanford Nuclear Reservation closed down and cleaned up and that some other state is dealing with our nuclear legacy.
