The Tea Party-backed candidate for the Republican nomination in the Dem-held AL-02 district is up with a new ad in which he declares that the modern system of taxation and social safety nets is a form of "slavery" -- and he is using an Abraham Lincoln impersonator to back him up.

Rick Barber's new ad follows up from his previous spot, in which Barber promised to seek President Obama's impeachment, and a George Washington impersonator told viewers to "gather your armies" against the tyranny of the Obama administration.

"Hey Abe," Barber asks. "If someone is forced to work for months to pay taxes so that a total stranger can get a free meal, medical procedure or a bailout, what's that called? What's it called when one man is forced to work for another?"

The Lincoln impersonator answers, "Slavery," followed by a rapid-fire montage of Southern African-American slavery, Communist labor camps, and Nazi concentration camps.

"We shed a lot of blood to stop that in the past, didn't we?" Barber says. "Now look at us. We are all becoming slaves to our government."

From a historical standpoint, Barber's ad does have a few errors. For one thing, Alabama conservatives did not shed a lot of blood to stop slavery -- they shed a lot of blood to perpetuate it, in opposition to a powerful federal government. Indeed, it's quite interesting to see a Southern right-winger putting words into Lincoln's mouth on this subject.

Late Update: As commenters have pointed out (and indeed, a history buff like myself is ashamed to admit he didn't think of it first), Lincoln was a lifelong champion of the traditional Whig policies of "internal improvements" -- that is levying taxes, usually through tariffs, to fund infrastructure projects throughout the country, and incorporating the principle of central banking. In addition to prosecuting the Civil War, Lincoln's administration put all of those policies into effect, as his Republican Party's political coalition was built upon the foundation of the northern Whigs.

Late Late Update: Let's make this whole thing even funnier. Rick Barber, who has declared that the income tax is a tyrannical act that forces Americans to spy on themselves for the government, has invoked the name and image of Abraham Lincoln -- who implemented the first income tax in this country's history, in order to pay for the Civl War.

so i guess he's advocating the total abolition of taxes?

i mean, i'm forced to work to pay for the bombs we drop on other countries. i'm also forced to work to pay for cops that protect crazy teabaggers who live in the same municipality as me. and so on. all of THAT is "slavery," too, right?

Ehh...Rick Barber is a joke. Just like Dale Peterson and Roy Moore are jokes and, just like them, he's not going to get past the primary. Martha Roby is going to be the GOP candidate - she came within 1% of winning without a runoff in a field of 4 candidates, and she should win the runoff handily. So, sure, the commercial is sort of fun, but it's nothing to get worked up about.

More to the point, this ad certainly doesn't represent the majority of Alabama voters in any way. It's worth noting that, despite the CW on here that has all Alabamians as racist rednecks, the district is just not that conservative - the seat, as a matter of fact, is currently held by a moderate Dem, Bobby Bright, a popular former Mayor of Montgomery. He may very well lose this term, but it won't be to this clown.

Mockery is the only reasonable response. His opponent should do a response with Santa Claus talking about all the things we should get for FREE FREE FREE from our government without having to pay slave taxes and ho ho ho don;t worry the FREE FREE FREE is not for poor people to buy food and pay rent. Just for middle-class people to educate their kids and to pay for cops and soldiers.

You said it! Stupid people. I watch in awe as this guy makes stuff up at his whim. A southerner referencing slavery as being a bad thing is funny and twisted on so many levels. And southerners actually voting for this guy on that premise is even funnier. In 1865, Lincoln was the pariah of the south; as hated by southerners as Obama is today. Back then they had reason to hate Lincoln. He abolished slavery, defeated and humiliated the south, and as a result today a black man is president! But don't let that get in the way of a song. The "bubba" culture at its finest.

My point was that no one is "forced to work" in America today. You have the ability to work and you should work to support yourself and your family.

Slaves were "forced" to work, they were considered property.

Force is a very strong word, be aware of how you use it.

As if Obama has enough time to read forums and be angry. When I read it I thought it was an attempt at humor- but then I see the author posted in on World Nut Daily.

No, not the abolition of all taxes. Just the abolition of all powers usurped by congress - which is most of them - and the taxes that are collected to pay for this theft.

Given that the Union army (like the Confederate) was largely manned by conscripts, and that Lincoln instituted the first draft in American, or at least U.S., history (the Confederacy did it first), I'm going to have to go with "no" on that one.

Lincoln was a vocal advocate of Whig economic policies which involved instituting a massive tax on foreign businesses to finance public works projects, a federal bank intended to control monetary values, and federal assumption of state debt.

"My politics are short and sweet, like the old woman’s dance, I am in favor of a national bank . . . the internal improvements system, and a high protective tariff." - Abraham Lincoln

In other words, Lincoln was a card-carrying commie by Tea Party standards.

Not only is he channeling dead presidents but he's incorporating other internet memes in his ads: Am I the only one who noticed Alabama's failed Ag Commissioner candidate, Dale Petersen, in this ad. And, as a bonus feature, the guy singing the "secret verse" of the National anthem was also a minor Youtube sensation when he sang it to a Tea Party rally a couple of weeks ago.

As a transplanted Yankee now living in the South, I just have to say that Southern Republicans who choose to use Abraham Lincoln's memory are almost always cynical in their approach. Robin Smith (now a candidate for Zach Wamp's seat in TN-3) invoked Lincoln while simultaneously signing off on attack ads that portrayed Obama as a closet Muslim. Lou Ann Zelenik (Rutherford Co. GOP chair) recently invoked MLK to justify protesting against the construction of a Muslim mosque in Murfreesboro. Lincoln is an ironic character for Southerners, and particularly Republicans who now seem to relish the opportunity to rub race-baiting and slavery references in the faces of Democrats.

I think some of you are giving the likes of Rick Barber too much credit. I doubt there's any deeper meaning to any of their messages. Their worldview is as simple as many of their constituents. In their minds, Lincoln ended slavery, they equate taxes with slavery, so of course Lincoln is an appropriate spokesman against taxes. Anyone capable of grasping the irony of Lincoln's appearance in such a commercial probably wouldn't be voting for Barber anyway. This is just a GOTV ad.

What is it about these nuts that they don't understand every time a person goes to an ER or seeks other medical treatment that they can't afford, forces us to pay a hidden tax.

It is the high cost of health insurance premiums, in large part driven up by the uninsured, that are crushing federal, state and local budgets as well as creating the longest period stagnation in personal income in modern times (excluding the rich and those earning over $300,000 per year, their incomes increased 17% in 2009).

So the dipshit in the ad has a choice. He can be forced to work for more pay and stabilized taxes to help pay for health insurance for those without. OR he can be forced to work for less pay, forever increasing tax burdens (state and local) and pay even more for the health insurance for those who already have it.

Why is it that Americans pay at least twice as much as any other nation for health care, as a percentage of GDP?

Nearly the same for education, and we sure aren't getting what we pay for.

Maybe it isn't all those uninsured people (medical insurance, for other than catastrophes, was not common 50 years ago in the U.S., but most hospitals took charity cases).

Japan, where most things cost 2 or 3 times as much as in the U.S., has much cheaper, higher quality health care.

Of course, Japan sets artificial limits on the number of people who can study to become lawyers, but NO limits on the number of people who can become doctors. The U.S.A. does just the opposite.

Scarcity leads to higher prices and lower quality. Coincidence?

Terrible production values, but mostly correct thinking. As the author has noted, Lincoln - the Great Enslaver - should not be invoked. He managed to get relative freedom for blacks - which was good - but at the cost of enslaving all of America.

Welfare - whether individual or corporate - distorts all of the market signals, and makes all of us poorer and less free.

Taxation to provide basic services that no one but government can provide is one thing; taxation to provide services that others can provide better and cheaper is something else; and being forced to pay top dollar to force children into schools to be miseducated about everything for the benefit of those in power - that is QUITE another thing. As the saying goes, Democracy is two foxes and a chicken deciding what to have for dinner.

BTW, I've traveled around the world, and there are lots of better places to live. If it weren't for the language problem, I might have moved already - and I'm still thinking about it. Espanol es no muy dificil.

First of all it's: Espanol no es muy dificil. (yes I'm missing the accents because I'm lazy)

Secondly, explain to me this comment: "being forced to pay top dollar to force children into schools to be miseducated about everything..."

Is that a knock on public schools? Top dollar? That's rich. You do realize we spend more on our prisoners than our students right? We spend more money locking people up than we do giving them the tools in life they need to avoid that.

Why would you not want our children to be educated? Don't you believe that giving our children a leg up in global society should be a shared responsibility? Do you believe that the $$ is the only metric of success in a society?

The countries that provide a full education to their children are rapidly pulling ahead of us on the global stage. Germany for one--even after they had to pay for the rebuilding of all of Europe, we can't even rebuild a proper power grid or levee.

I don't see any services more basic to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, than health-care, education and infrastructure.

What Latin American country are you considering? Venezuela?
