Thousands of Late 90s Elena Kagan Emails Released From Clinton Archives

Clinton-era Elena Kagan

The Clinton Presidential Library this afternoon released a massive batch of emails from Elena Kagan’s inbox when she worked in the White House, the final pages to paint a portrait of President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.

We’ll be reading through them, but in the meantime you can check out emails Kagan wrote, messages she received and email related to Kagan.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Pat Leahy said in a statement this afternoon following the late-Friday release that members tasked with Kagan’s nomination and the public “have unprecedented access to Elena Kagan’s electronic mail files from her time as a White House attorney.”

“The evaluation of her record and qualifications has been the most open and transparent in history,” said Leahy (D-VT). “There is no chapter from her professional life for which we do not have significant records to review.”

It’s not clear how riveting the material will be. She describes a meeting as “not great, not bad,” and offers her colleagues short responses thanking them for sending information over.

Here’s the first example we found by randomly clicking on one of the batches:

great — thanks.

Another details some upcoming meetings:

RECORD TYPE: PRESIDENTIAL (NOTES MAIL) CREATOR: Elena Kagan ( CN=Elena Kagan/OU=OPD/O=EOP [ OPD 1 ) CREATION DATE/TIME: 1-JUN-1997 17:37:12.00 SUBJECT: Re: Late Term TO: Sylvia M. Mathews ( CN=Sylvia M. Mathews/OU=WHO/O=EOP @ EOP [ WHO 1 ) READ: UNKNOWN TEXT:

The meeting was fine — not great, not bad. It focused on fairly
short-term things — in particular, on whether the AMA policy can be
reversed at its convention on June 23. We agreed to do a bit of thinking
about whether we (in truth, HHS) could contribute to that effort. Chuck
and I are meeting with the AG on Tuesday; Donna offered to send over some
doctors this week (though we don’t know who or when) to give a medical
briefing. I think we all could use a briefing from the legislative
people, but I lean toward asking for this at one of the morning meetings,
rather than calling a separate meeting for the purpose.

As we reported earlier, this caps the release of records related to her service in the White House in the late 1990s. Hearings start June 28.
