Las Vegas -- Senate candidate Sharron Angle (R-NV) revved up a conservative crowd today, even as she denied her pre-primary win statements on phasing out Social Security.

Addressing the conservative convention RightOnline at the Venetian casino this afternoon, Angle was hailed for pledging to "permanently repeal the death tax" and for saying she stands with Arizona's new immigration law. She has become a conservative darling in her bid to unseat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).

Angle repeated her desire to shut down the Department of Education, saying that it and other federal functions should be left to the states. She also said if elected her vision is, "One nation under God, not one nation under the government."

Angle's remarks on Social Security were the most likely to be new political fodder in an increasingly competitive race. The TPM Poll Average is Reid 44.0% to Angle 43.1%.

During Angle's less-than-10-minute speech, she outlined her philosophy to cut the deficit and talked of her "simple" campaign plan she calls "Pay back, cut back and take back." To start with she said the government should pay back the $2.5 trillion that's been "raided and pillaged out of the Social Security fund."

"I've never said I want to eliminate, I always said I want to save Social Security by paying back. But to do that we have to cut back," Angle told the crowd of more than 1,100 attendees to mild applause.

Of course, it takes just a few seconds to find video of Angle's now-famed quote on Nevada's "Face to Face" television show that, "We need to phase Medicare and Social Security out in favor of something privatized."

Angle said the government could use leftover stimulus funds and money paid back from the TARP program and "put that money into that Social Security fund that would send a clear message, not only to seniors that we're acting in good faith, but also to our businesses that we really understand we need to go in a different direction and that different direction is not charging up on an already maxed out credit card."

Angle said lawmakers should take a look at the Constitution and "re-read the part that says the federal government has enumerated powers and says everything else is for the states."

"Pay attention to our founding fathers, they knew what it takes to be a free nation," she said.

Angle said that since winning she's received many small donations from across the country, adding, "I get the sweetest notes." She closed with "We have the right angle to defeat Harry Reid."

I shot some video as Angle was introduced and when she took the stage. Watch:

Last night I spoke with a California member of the tea party who explained why she believes Angle is an "icon." Watch:

One nation under God, not one nation under the government

Remember back when libertarians used to say they were different from theocrats?

Libertarians who say stuff like that aren't really libertarians. They're just far-right Republicans who disown their party.

Exactly. A true Libertarian is against government control over guns and abortions. Against Political Correctness (whatever that is) and religious interference in government.

Well, in a sense, she's the perfect libertarian. In the nearly hackneyed, if usually truncated, words of Emerson, "[a] foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines." Libertarian ideology is the intellectual space where Emerson's foolish consistency meets reductio ad absurdium. Religious loonyism can snap into that kind of mindset like one Lego into another.

Little minds like Angle's latch on to libertarianism because it allows them to assume a pretense of intellectualism without having to bother with a lot of pesky complexity and relativism and moral ambiguity. One or two facile truisms suffice to explain all things and generates the one, only, indisputably "correct" policy for all matters of public concern.

Which, come to think of it, is an equally apt description of communism, fascism, Broderism, Friedmanism, the various religious fundamentalisms that afflict the world, and the Democratic Leadership Conference.

Aside from all that she keeps lying even when it is possible for people to produce the speech where she wanted to kill social security. Of course, for me, I have payed in to Social Security since I picked fruit when I was a teenager. I expect Social Security to be around long after I am dead and gone. But this drip not only lied about her wanting to stop Social Security but it is on a tape. For her to deny what she actually said is worse than the statement she made. She has a right to her opinion but to deny what she said is just a big lie. Liars are not to be trusted. I am a Republican but I say, "Go, Harry Reid" this lying woman cannot be trusted.

Wow. While entertaining, the cognitive dissonance is utterly remarkable.

"One nation under God, not one nation under the government."

"Pay attention to our founding fathers, they knew what it takes to be a free nation," she said.

Sharron knows that the Citizens of this country worship more than one God....and that many don't worship a god at all. Tellingly, she doesn't say 'under a god', but rather 'God' as a singular entity not subject to interpretation.

She also knows that the founding fathers established a a government made up of laws, and specifically one that is not subject to the interpretation of a given church, a consortium of religions or religious leaders.

So, her statement clearly indicates that she stands in direct opposition to the intent of the founding fathers she regularly quotes. Which, of course, would make her un-American and an anti-Patriot.

Except that she would argue (disingenuously, but since when has any right winger shied away from being disingenuous?) that "privatizing" Social Security is not the same thing as scrapping it. It is "saving" Social Security, because of course, government programs never work; therefore, Social Security as a government program is ultimately doomed. Only private retirement programs work. I think she doesn't know and if it were to be explained to her she wouldn't understand. The far right has so thoroughly embraced the notion of trickle-down economics that they cannot accept that there's an alternative theory that works. Despite it being proved multiple times it doesn't work, they continue the myth because they get their money from the rich and not us poor folk.

A lot of these people are near militant in their religious beliefs but are actually pretty poor in doing WJWD. The vast pool of Christians who believe in being a good person are so overshadowed by the hypocrites who take a "do as I say and not as I do" approach to everything that it's causing a divide and making a lot of people angry at all Christians, just like how these folks are angry at all Muslims.

Take the deep South, where I'm currently residing, where there's plenty of Southern Baptists who control city councils and whole counties. They have blue laws based upon their religion, however don't practice the abstinence themselves and go out of town to drink and drive home. They set up tax structures to keep the blacks out of the nice schools, because as a guy from Hattiesburg, MS told me the other day, "down here in the South, when you get a bunch of blacks together they cause trouble."

This woman is dumber than Sarah Palin. I can't get over how fucking stupid she is.

"Pay attention to our founding fathers, they knew what it takes to be a free nation."

Why tell the truth when lying is so much easier? Where do I begin?

-slavery, to be owned isn't to be free
-only white male landowners could vote
-Native American land grabs and genocide, reservations don't make people free
-there was a first version of the constitution that failed miserably, and it granted the majority of power to the states with a weak federal government
-some of the framers wanted a monarchy
-the holy masterpiece that they created almost fucking fell apart less than 100 years after it was formed (the Civil War) due to the giant "oversight" of slavery.
-Native Americans couldn't legally practice their indigenous religions from 1883 until Jimmy Carter signed the Native American Religious Freedom Act of 1978 (19fucking78!), that doesn't sound free to me
-Gay people still can't be married in almost every state due to people who think God talks to them

In a country that claims all men are created equal, the reality has never met the ideal. People have always been beholden to other, more powerful groups in this country, and to deny that is dangerous. Control, like progress, is dynamic. If we ignore the injustice that appears to be inherent in our way of being, then how can we fight against it?

Gotta love someone who claims everyone else needs to read the Constitution then misqoutes it. Nowhere does the document say the only powers of Congress are the enumerated ones - a striking difference between the Articles of Confederation (which stated Congress only had those powers explicitly granted by the states) and the Constitution (which empowers Congress with the ability to pass all "necessary and proper" legislation to carry out its responsibilities). The 10th Amendment doesn't say anything about enumerated powers, either - just the idea that there is no power vacuum in that any powers not granted the government are reserved to the states.

If she doesn't believe me, maybe she'd believe John Marshall, whose opinion in McCullogh v. Maryland back in 1805 took on this very issue and found the government's authority under the "necessary and proper" clause extended to chartering the US bank (a non-enumerated power). But I guess Founding Fathers only count when they agree with her.

I know that any change to social security scares the frankin out liberals.
This is the base, I think, Sherron Angle is thinking on:
I retired 10 years ago. My grand dad took me to a financial guy when I got married. I worked and invested on his advice.
I now get: Soc Sec = $1400. Union Pension = $1200.
Business investment = $2800. These are monthly income amounts..

Your company pension is only $1200? Our company pensions in Canada are between two to three times that amount, then you add Canada Pension Plan and Old age Security Pension plus what you ahve in a Registered Retiorement Savings Plan. Of course we have had $1200 a month more in our pockets (much of it placed in Registered Retirement Savings Accounts)paying for health care through taxation and then having far better health care from cradle to grave than you Amercians have, despite your wasting the $1200 a month on health costs for inferior health care in the US while we have that $1200 a month in our pockets.

Congratulations. You have been lucky. Maybe you entered and left the working world at ideal times in the business cycle. But many people are less lucky; they they enter the cycle at times of very low growth, or there is a precipitous plunge in the market near the end of their working lives. These are things that nobody has any real control of. The best you can do is to hedge your bets, so that the vagueries of market timing don't wipe you completely out.

That is the purpose of Social Security: to provide a floor below which nobody will fall. If you can take your discretionary funds and do better, that is all well and good. You are even better off than you might otherwise have been. But your Social Security money is always there as a backstop.

I do not understand what is wrong with that. It would seem to me to be the prudent, conservative, thing to do.
