The House was debating a bill last night that would provide up to $7.4 billion in health care aid to rescue and recovery workers who have faced health problems since their work in the wake of the September 11 attacks. The bill ultimately failed to get the needed two-thirds majority, 255-159, and Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) was not happy about it. Not one bit.
In a rant that lasted for almost two minutes, a hopping mad Weiner railed against "cowardly" Republicans who claimed they were voting against the bill because of "procedure." Weiner spat: "It's Republicans wrapping their arms around Republicans, rather than doing the right thing on behalf of the heroes!"
Weiner attacked those who "stand up and say, 'Oh, if only we had a different process we'd vote yes.' You vote yes if you believe yes! You vote in favor of something if you believe it's the right thing! If you believe it's the wrong thing, you vote no!"
"It is a shame! A shame," he exclaimed.
Truly must watch:
Late Update: Anthony Weiner's rampage continued this morning, as he and Rep. Peter King got into a shouting match on Fox News. Watch it here.

I wish Democrats would stop using the word "shame" when it comes to Republicans. The concept of "shame" doesn't mean a goddamn thing to any of them.
Regardless, kudos to Weiner for standing up and actually expressing some anger about a subject that should be a no-brainer win for Democrats. The Republican Party is just one big target-rich environment, and it's amazing how seldom the Dems take advantage of it. It's a party with absolutely no sense of public relations and marketing.

Couldn't agree more. From top to bottom, there's absolutely no reason why they shouldn't be exposed for the people they are. They have no shame about being shills, they try to rationalize it to their constituents, and they believe it.
Anger is good. Anger, like what Weiner displayed was real. Seeing that, I see a man who actually has some sort of principle, character, believes in SOMETHING. I say we need more of this, a projection of the way that I feel towards the status quo of congressional politics. It's really something rally behind.

"[Republigoons] have no shame about being shills, they try to rationalize it to their constituents, and they believe it."
The problem is the constituents as much as the politicians. Those Republigoons are going to go back during recess (thank goodness another one is coming up during this long summer of sleepless nights passing 2,000 page unread bills, and all those endless meetings with lobbyists!) and get their backs patted and congratulatory hand shakes for stopping a bill that would nurse our NYC heros back to health. The problem with this country is the stupid red states and their stupid constituents wielding their stupid bibles and clinging to their stupid guns. We should just cut them off completely, kick their right wing shills of the Senate and House, and leave them to wallow in their capitalist utopias. Of course we'd lose 75% of the land mass of the Union, but BLM owns most of that land (Thanks to the first black president!), so maybe some "special measures" in the style of Yezhov would mitigate any loss of land.
Regarding the cost of the "Health for Heros" Bill (like that? I made that up, just now!), how much in comparison to the Iraq/Afghanistan wars would this cost us!?
So, let's look at the numbers, it's only $7.4B, or dividing by approximately 10,000 first responders (of which only a couple of thousand were actually on-site when the buildings collapsed, but there was a lot of dust in the cleanup), making a measly $740,000 payout per person. Oops, forgot to add in the concurrent civil settlement award of $713M, so add another $71,300, carry the one, add the $300, and...
... hey, that's $811,300 per person. Actually, that's pretty good (especially for my cousin Juan who made a killing vending hot dogs at $10 a pop in the days that followed 9/11)! Even as expensive as healthcare is these days, that's a heavy multiple of what most people spend on an entire lifetime of healthcare. Wow, and since most of the ground zero workers were covered by generous public employee healthcare plans that perpetuate into retirement (Juan didn't have a healthplan, but later took a union job with NYC Department of Sanitation, so he's good), they won't even need to spend their $1M windfall on healthcare.
Awesome, I see Florida condos and Caribbean Cruises in the future for these folks if our Democratic representatives can get this through. And since we really can't get the health care they need in the US, they can stop by Cuba on the Island Princess and Dr.s Fidel and Raul can nurse them back to health. Ah, Cuba, what a paradise for those that embraced our vision, er, the vision of Castro.
But, because of the Party of "NO", these poor New Yorkers will never get a taste of Cuban healthcare, never feel the warm breeze of the Caribbean wafting into their condos and staterooms. How many more times will the thugs in congress disenfranchise Blacks, Gays, and Latinos before we kick them out of office!?
"Anger is good. I say we need more of this, a projection of the way that I feel towards the status quo of congressional politics. It's really something rally behind."
And I concur, I angry. Let's just vote "NO" to every sitting congressman and overturn the damned thing, turn everyone of them out (except for the Blacks, Gays, and Latinos, because that would be racist - lucky break for Rangle, eh!). We should have rallies and form a ground swell movement to drown out those miserable Tea Baguettes that embolden their Republigoon shills.

You literally have no clue what you are talking about. There have been a number of news shows and documentaries discussing the healthcare woes of first responders. For example, anyone who was not on the payroll, just being good citizens, gets zip, zero, nada from the state.
Many first responders are dead and dying. They are dealing with expensive medical treatments, with no way to pay for them.
And the Cuban healthcare system is a very good one, btw. Only Americans do not take regular vacations to Cuba. Hell, Canadians go there all the time.

I think that's awful to condemn the entire citizenry of a country to spend eternity engulfed in flames of everlasting torment. I'm sure at least some Canadians end up in Purgatory. And don't blame it on Cuba, if Canadians are getting in trouble while vacationing, it's their own conduct and it would be as likely to happen in the Bahamas or the Caiman Islands. What are you talking about!? I had lunch with him last week. Fidel and Raul only faked his death because he wanted to take up poetry and the sitar (he says he was inspired by some of the later Beatles' albums), and that didn't make for a very good reputation for a guerilla leader within The Party.
With the Cuban healthcare he's received over the years, he's actually quite healthy. Oh, and he gave up smoking back in the 1980s once the Surgeon General started posting such stern warnings on the side panels of humidors.

Agree, why can't the Dems learn from Newtie? "Shame" is tired, and he only criticizes the result with that word. Had he real balls, he would have named names, and said they were shameful, or 1 step removed, their actions were shameful, dishonest, coldhearted, whatever. But the Dems as always are a mile behind in PR, and agitprop, and so lose the rhetoric war. AND, for bad PR lesson 2, he never says what the vote was, so if someone just views this clip, they think he's a mad man.
CORRECTLY DONE

If these peoole (and ALL others) were Canadians they would have access to health care with no out of pocket cost, and would live an average three years longer than they would in the United States, as all Canadians do, because ALL Canadians have access to health care. In addition, 1.5 million Americans come to Canada for the health care they are denied because of the insurance takeover of American health care - so now the 9/11 rescuers will have to go to Canada for the health care they are denied by Republicans.

I always thought there was some kind of connection there! Socialized medicine, inspired by the Russian communists! But how do they extract the vaccine out of the Russian president!? Maybe when he's working out making training videos, they collect sweat from his back (of course they would have to filter out the hair) and culture it? Kind of gross sounding to me.
I'd rather think it has to do with the Canadian diet. Last time I was up there, aside from Tim Horton's Doughnuts, I went to Costco and they served up this delicious plate of French Fries with gravy and goat cheese on it. Yum! That will put hair on your chest and an extra 10 years on the end of your life!

Did you actually look up the federal income tax rates for Canada before you made that assumption? I'm guessing you didn't since your state is incorrect. Canada's federal tax rate tops out at 29% while the U.S. tax rate tops out at 35%. We're paying more and getting less.

You forget Canada's 5% national sales tax, on top of the individual provinces' respective sales taxes. There are also the provincial income taxes (as high as 17.5% in Nova Scotia and 14.7% in British Columbia), its $100 vehicle air conditioning tax and its very high "sin taxes" on alcohol, cigarettes and the like (I don't have a problem with the last one, but it is still there).

Even with the 5% Canadian version of the VAT and the "sin taxes," they're still getting a better deal than we are. We have our own sin taxes, so that's likely to be close to a wash, and while we don't have a VAT, we do have a sales tax (or some other means of raising revenue) in many states (8.625% by me).
BTW, your examples are wrong. The highest combined sales tax rates in a Canadian province is 15.5% in Prince Edward Island and 15% in Nova Scotia. (not counting anything individual cities may be collecting as they do here in the US as well). Other provinces vary from 10%-13% with Alberta coming in the lowest at 5% (they don't have a provincial sales tax). It is noticeably convenient, however, that you erred on the high side.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sales_taxes_in_Canada
So the bottom line is this, giving 3-7% on sales tax gets Canadians national health care. None of them are forced to write checks every month for $1500 or thereabouts; none of them are forced to litigate with insurance companies who throw people off of insurance because they have the audacity to get sick; none of them will have to file for bankruptcy and lose everything they've worked for all their lives because of an illness to themselves or a loved one; none of them will have to make the decision between buying needed prescription drugs or buying food.
It sounds like the deal of the damned century to me.

I disagree — Democrats need to point out Republican's shameful behavior and point it out often! I agree that Republicans have no shame, or they suppress their shame when acting like sociopaths, but pointing it out is for the benefit of the American public — not to get Republicans to change.
In fact, part of me wants to see Republicans continue their trend of antagonizing every segment of the population that isn't wealthy, male and older, because that's what they're being left with. Women, minorities, gays, the middle class, non-Christians, and now 9/11 first responders — Republicans are losing them all.

So the GOP votes against Small Business lending yesterday and today votes against health-care for 9/11 responders, where is the liberal media outrage? I mean during the Bush II years we had the media crying out every time they believed Former President Bush supported expanded executive authority, then you had the majority GOP carrying the message that any doubts on their war or pro-defense policy was somehow against the troops. Yet here we have very little fanfare that the GOP votes against small business lending, after decades of them carrying on their mantel the idea that the GOP was all about creating small business. It would appear to me that them voting against this is a huge story, they voted against small business. Then you have the previous administration entangled in bad decision making concerning 9/11 responders, leaving the US courts to settle many of these issues at the taxpayers expense and the Dem's propose a bill to fund the 9/11 responders and hopefully keep much of these cases out of the courts and the GOP votes against it. If the GOP does not pay for this in the media, then seriously what am I to hope for. Next thing you know the Dem's will be introducing a bill for family values and the GOP will vote against that because it's not the GOP family values or it was a procedural thing. Whatever the case when is the GOP going to get hammered for voting against its own messages, voting against the American worker, voting against the workers for 9/11 and voting against this president simply for partisan gain. There really should be no partisan advantage to voting against any of the bills that have been brought to the floor. Every time a GOP member mentions the deficit, the Dem's should cry look at the government numbers Reagan, Bush I and Bush II all increased the deficit and increased government spending, Every time the GOP yells that the dem's are against the american people, the dem's should just point at these votes, the GOP is against small business, the GOP is against the 9/11 first responders health and the GOP is against climate change and any legislation that would be used to alleviate its effects.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. An outburst like this DOES change things, or at least have the potential to change them. No, it won't change any minds about the issues and it won't make people reject Republicans hypocrisy, but what it does is to show that Democrats care enough to fight. Usually, Dems come across as either caring only enough to worry and wring our hands, but not enough to fight. It fosters a perception of weakness or insincerity.
Weiner got up and fought and refused to be silenced by the objections of Republicans in the House. Bravo!
Weiner lost the fight on health care for 9/11 responders, but he had the guts to show genuine outrage and that kind of heart is what voters respect.

I agree.. Weiner, Grayson and Frank are the only Dems who regularly poke the GOP with a stick and call them on their bullshit.
These Dems are obviously targets of the GOP and the rest of the Dems fear being in the same class as them
If all the Dems had this passion and fire in their belly, the GOP wouldn't be allowed to hide cowardly in the shadows, shilling for corporate interests... this also goes for a fair share of Dems who do the same.

I hope New York returns Weiner to the House in November, and on and on until he runs for something higher. This is a man of passion for all the right reasons. Whenever I see him as a guest on a talk show, he may be more reserved, but he is just as passionate. Progressives need people like him and Alan Grayson to express out own righteous indignation. Actually, no, I'd like to keep him in Congress for a good long time. I think his political talents are particularly well-suited to the House, and I fear his greatest gifts would be lost on the presidency.
A talented Congressman can accomplish just as much, and maybe more, with a long career in the Congress as with 8 years in the White House.

Democratic leaders opted to consider the House bill under a procedure that requires a two-thirds vote for approval rather than a simple majority. Such a move blocked potential GOP amendments to the measure.
It failed to win the needed two-thirds majority, 255-159. The vote was largely along party lines, with 12 Republicans joining Democrats supporting the measure.

Rep. Weiner is right with both his facts and his tone.
Really? No support for 9/11 emergency responders? This is the party that that's going to take back seats in November? We ALL really need to push back, without fear like Rep. Weiner, to counter the meme that the Republican will take back Washington. The have no ideas. They are the same party that was voted out in 2006 and 2008. However you feel about President Obama, the fact is that it's the same old GOP.

As has already been explained by fkaZk0sm0 in response to your first post . . .
So you are correct, 255 voting FOR the bill to 159 AGAINST the bill is not even close.
Unfortunately 255 FOR the bill is not two thirds of a majority.
159 brave Reprobates voted against providing health care to brave heroes of 9/11.
I think that makes 159 Reprobates even braver.

this is the supposed procedural argument that republicans were making (they voted against it because they couldn't hang amendments on it).
and this is the needed context of "the bill ultimately failed 255-159" (255 FOR, 159 against) that the author should have included.

I think that there was a special clause in the bill for SEU that Mr. Wiener promised would be expanded to include some of the other city Unions, so not all of the $7.4B will trickle down to the sick, but initial CBO reports indicate that at least 1/3 of the appropriation will, so Mr. Wiener should be commended for doing so much for the good folks in New York.

Maybe if the bill had a "love nest" appropriation for r and r it might have garnered more Republican support (e.g., pre-9/11 Giuliani, post-9/11 Kerik)

Speaking of Giuliani, we haven't heard from him lately. Odds on him actually appearing on TV to condemn republicans for voting against helping his fellow 9/11 heroes?
I can't wait for the next James Carville interview. He will tear him some cajun a** up on TV with this. "Those despicable republicans care more about keeping a church from being built than helping out our heroes! People DIED!!! And Republicans are KILLING THEM AGAIN!" (imagine it being said in his cool cajun tone of voice with Mary Matalin scornfully watching in a seat next to him)

A significant aspect of Weiner's comments is that they were an attack not on Republicans generally, but on Peter King specifically. The "you" is Peter King.
Nevertheless, it plays well as a calling out of all Republicans. Good for Weiner.

I wonder how many of the 150 Republicans who voted against this wrapped themselves in the Flag throughout the Bush Administration and attacked anyone who questioned money for defense contractors.
One IMPORTANT thing to note: This was a bill with only one purpose, helping sick 9/11 responders. The Republicans realized that they could not object to purportedly extraneous matters. It called for a straight up-and-down vote -- the type of vote the GOP keeps on calling for -- on whether to support the 9/11 responders.

And when the issue was health care, weren't they the ones saying, "Give us a clean bill. Just give us a clean bill."
Well, this was a clean bill. And they objected because of the procedure that required it to remain a clean bill.

I love Rep. Weiner and Rep. Grayson for their willingness to stand up and say what they think and feel is right. If only there were a few more. We need people who are willing to shout it from the rooftops whenever the Republicans pull stunts like this. It's all no-no-no. Nothing for the American people. Everything for big business and the rich.
Now they are targeting the men and women who put their lives in peril on and after September 11.
The word shame may be over used, but it is appropriate here and every time the Republicans hold Americans hostage to their agenda of bringing down the President. It is probably better to use "shame" rather than the truer description of self-serving egomaniacs who would rather see the country burn than do the right thing.
I just wish the lamestream media (and the national "mainstream" is lame) would report more on the obstructionism and truth than they do. With them, it's all about Snookie, who's going to host American Idol, and Sarah Palin's latest "you betcha". Those are certainly more newsworthy, aren't they? ;) ;)

The Dems are on the brink of losing a ton of seats with their current approach. Policy: We are in recession- the worst since WWII. This is an ideal time to spend extra money on a worthy cause.
More policy: "Democratic leaders opted to consider the House bill under a procedure that requires a two-thirds vote for approval rather than a simple majority. Such a move blocked potential GOP amendments to the measure."
So the 2/3 vote cuts through the nonsense.
Politics: "Support for the heroes". It has a nice ring to it. It's even completely accurate.

"I'm sure the all of the First Responders didn't plan on raising our taxes just because they were doing their job."
I'm sure all the first responders believed Bush when he said they would be taken care of.
"Every chance he gets, President Bush rightfully reminds the American People that we're under a constant state of threat, as he did over and over again in his State of the Union speech. But in that same speech, President Bush failed to mention even one time the words 'first responders' or 'fire fighters.'
"Like his erroneous erroneous projections of the cost of the Medicare Bill he pushed through Congress, his outrageous predictions of job growth that he said would result from his tax cuts for the rich, or his insistence that Weapons of Mass Destruction were there, his first responder facts are wrong, too.
The fact is that the $3.561 billion President Bush claims to allocate to fund first responders is actually a reduction of $700 million from last year's $4.2 billion in funding approved by Congress. " - The General President of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Harold Schaitberger, April 21 2004. Just a random quote from Bush screwing over the first responders for years.
And today? "They pulled the rug out from beneath our feet. Whatever member of Congress vote against this bill, whether Republican or Democrat, should go to jail for manslaughter." John Feal, a ground zero demolition worker.
But hey you are still trying to make some stupid point about taxes. But you know the killer thing? This would not have raised takes on us one Iota
"To pay the bill's estimated $7.4 billion cost over 10 years, the legislation would have prevented foreign multinational corporations incorporated in tax haven countries from avoiding tax on income earned in the U.S."
So yeah, it would have made some companies actually pay their taxes like everyone else. No wonder the Republicans chose to can it over peoples lives.
"Did you buy a Volt yet or plan on buying a Volt in the near future?"
Show where Obama told anyone to buy a Volt. Quotes please. And no, I'm not buying one.

GAWD. I love that little son of a bitch! I mean that in the nicest way, one son of a bitch to another!
I'd like to relocate to New York, just so's I could say, "Anthony Weiner is my Congressman" and say it proudly!
I wish the Democrats had an army of congresspeople like Weiner, and like the Gentleman from Florida, Alan Grayson, also a firebrand extraordinaire.
We need people like them, because the Republicans have lost all reason - witness the witlessness of DugFmJamul, a man who is clearly and obviously insane - and Max Thrax is absolutely correct, all we fat white people REALLY DO look shit, dead or alive - that is why I adore black women, passionately, because I just cannot stand the idea of having child like this:
"Isn't nice Weiner whines for the 49% of the Americans that don't pay income tax including illegal aliens. The 51% of Americans that do pay income tax should be honored to pay for the services of the other 49% plus illegal aliens, it's your socialist duty." - That's what they call 'taxes', fool!
"The Great Leader commands it." - Actually, Obama is not our 'great leader', he's our PRESIDENT - and like it or not, he's your president too - or did you forget that? That was the way I felt about Dubya Bush for eight long years, even though I knew he was wrong...
"I'm sure taking more money away from you all is not a problem, right? After all, it's not your money. Its the government's money, the government just lets you play with it for awhile then you must give most of it back...ha..ha!" - Actually, it's the PEOPLE'S money, since the government is a government of, by, and FOR the people...and it was a Republican who said that, perhaps the greatest president we ever had or can ever expect to have, ever. Have you forgotten that, too? Remember how he refused to punish the South? You should learn from his example, you soulless shell of a Human being....
"Maybe some of you peasants will be able to save enough to buy the new Government Motors electric automobile called "The Volt", its your socialist duty to buy one. Its only $41,000, so start saving your government pay checks because they won't last long...hee...hee." - Actually, as a Green-minded, responsible Progressive, I would LOVE to be able to purchase a new Tesla, it's more my speed, it's a true sports car, but I know what you mean, and since Global Climate Change is a proven scientific reality, it is the future - as for 'Government Motors', I am CERTAIN that if you actually do a little research, instead of lazily relying on Faux News talking points, you shall discover that GM has paid off all their debts to the US taxpayer, and that, HISTORICALLY, President Obama did nothing more for GM than President Reagan did in bailing out Chysler under Iacocca - or once again, did you forget that, too? The Chevy Volt? Hell, at least they're trying, what are YOU doing, f'Chrissakes, except bitching because you can't buy a new H-2?
Electric cars have been around for over 100 years, and the ONLY reason on God's Green Earth that they never caught on was because of the STRANGLEHOLD of the Petroleum Combine - and breaking their backs is our only hope, for SURVIVAL - do you get that??? Or are you just another in-denial, clueless fool???
"The Messiah Lord Obama commands it."
How many times do I have to repeat myself???
Barack Obama is not, I repeat, NOT, our 'Messiah figure' - his election was not just about him, although his being the first black president was indeed huge - he represents the 'forlorn hope' of modern American politics, the first breach assailing the impenetrable wall erected by the Upper Class to insulate themselves from the 'torches & pitchforks' of the 'masses of peasantry' you speak of so dismissively (and so comteptuously) above.
This is why they, why YOU, hate this man with such vitriol; it isn't his race, although that no doubt does play into it. It's because he may very well be the transormative president that General Colin Powell, one of my faves, predicted he could be - he can change the American political landscape, possibly for all time.
He could be a real Voice if the People. That is why you are afraid, and that is why you poor, deluded bastards have absolutely nothing to offer the American People but fear. And that fact is why you must fail, in order for democracy to survive.
"Let me assert my firm belief, that the only thing we have to fear is FEAR, ITSELF - nameless, paralyzing fear..." - Franklin Delano Roosevelt, March 20th, 1933
That was the same year Adolf Hitler conquered Germany through fear - and look how that turned out!
Who won? Who is still standing? Who paid the price for fear?
Anthony Weiner is unafraid, he and Jon Stewart grew up tough in the streets of New York City, and because he shows no fear, that is why I have courage and confidence for us Democrats winning the battle and the day.
That is how I know we will defeat you, time and time again.
Righteous fury always trumps fear, every single time.
Always...

No, the only reason you (democrats) win close elections is because non-citizens and felons are voting for democrats, time and time again because States don't validate US Citizenship when people register to vote and vote.
Did Obama make sure Unions got a sweeter deal from the GM bail out than the stock holders?

" The Gentleman will Observe regular Order and SIT DOWN"
Now if only we can get the rest of the Democrats and Obama to chant this same mantra we might get something done.....

You know, ever since the new administration came into office, and I voted for them, I have just been disappointed time and time again as bills that make so much sense and good decisions are just thrown away in favor of not making people mad. The political machine has just been completely taken over by fear.
I am so glad to see Congressman Weiner's outburst. I am glad to see a Democrat calling out an ignorant and utterly stupid man on his BS. I am glad to see that there is at least one person who sees reason, who doesn't act just because it is what he needs to get another term as Congressman. So much of the actions that are taken in this country are simply because those in power want to hold their position.
Democrats have to stop being afraid of bad press. They have to stop being afraid of those who fund their campaigns. It is that very fear which may prevent Elizabeth Warren, the best chance of making financial reform work, from being the head of a of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. I have been given back a little of my faith in government today, as I watched Anthony Weiner stand up and scream out that the Republican party has lost all reason, and calling out his fellow Democrats for just sitting back idly and letting a perfectly sensible bill just die away.
I agree with an above statement, righteous fury does trump fear, always.

And now Anthony Weiner has a target on his back, just like Grayson. Pointing out the obvious makes these truth tellers a target for fund raising for their GOP opponents.
