Rep. Michelle Bachmann's (R-MN) House Tea Party Caucus debut yesterday mimicked the tea party movement it hopes to represent in Washington -- it was confusing, bumbling and offered a dearth of solid policy goals.
Bachmann says the caucus aims to be a "receptacle" in Washington D.C. for the tea party's frustration with spending, taxes, socialism and, uh, billboard design. But if the caucus' first day is any impression, Bachmann's group will also mirror the amateurish political organizing of the movement.
[TPM SLIDESHOW: Meet The Tea Party Caucus]
Before yesterday's unbelievably diverse press conference introducing the caucus got underway, a Bachmann staffer handed out a list of the 28 Republicans that Bachmann's office said were members of the caucus. Before we fourth estaters could fold the thing up and dutifully bury it in a pocket somewhere, we were told the list was wrong -- it was missing Rep. John Mica (R-FL), we were told.
The trouble is, Mica isn't in the Tea Party Caucus -- as a general rule, he doesn't join caucuses ever, his staff told reporters. Turns out that wasn't the only thing wrong with the list -- or the last stumble of the caucus roll-out.
As David Frum's blog reported all day yesterday, Bachmann's caucus list was about as good an example of a poorly-run organization as you can find this week, save for the Department of Agriculture. The Tea Party Caucus list changed throughout the day, with names disappearing and reappearing as reporters called to verify things. The list itself disappeared from Bachmann's website for a time, before finally showing up again and staying up for good.
One Capitol Hill Republican with knowledge of the process told me the embarrassing debacle of the list was a 100% Bachmann affair -- the caucus list is run out of her office and its errors were, as far as my source knew, thanks to Bachmann's staff.
But Bachmann can't be blamed for the other fail of the tea party caucus rollout yesterday: the complete and total lack of any policy specifics. The tea party, as Bachmann and other Republican representatives at the press conference yesterday rightfully stated, is one of the most powerful political groups on the radar at the moment. The movement strikes fear in the hearts of Republican moderates everywhere (and often causes total loss of perspective in less-Republican circles, like the aforementioned Dept. Of Agriculture.) Yet the movement has often been hard to read policy-wise, making it hard for anyone to understand exactly what the movement stands for.
The Tea Party Caucus rally yesterday was no different. Though the gathered members talked a lot about "taking our country back" and "not taking it anymore," they offered essentially no specific policy agenda moving forward. Here's how the New York Times reported what that sounded like:
The caucus will work against new taxes and government spending in an effort to keep activities of the federal government within "constitutional limits," Ms. Bachmann said. She would not elaborate on how the group would move forward, whether, for instance, the Tea Party Caucus would offer legislation of its own or whether its members would work collectively for or against bills put forward by either party.
For reporters there, it was a struggle to find anything specific to write in our notebooks. Mine has these two phrases underlined several times: "Add Skype" and "cite Constitution." Those represented the two clear policy goals I heard from the Tea Party Caucus and its members. The first came from Bachmann, who called on Speaker Pelosi to allow the use of the popular video phone service at the Capitol so that caucus members can speak to tea partiers more easily.
The second came from Rep. Steve King (R-IA), a caucus member and tea party superstar in his own right. Asked by reporters after the event what specific laws he'd offer as a legislator carrying the tea party banner into the House, King said the only thing he could think of for the moment was a law requiring members to cite the Constitution when sponsoring legislation.

So teabaggers who oppose government spending are essentially on board with the costs associated with Bachmann spending every waking moment doing tea party stuff, not to mention the other 30 or so Republicans who probably don't do much else. So lets see: Bachmann's salary is about $165,000, with benefits its about $250,000. Add to that her staff and related expenditures - about $1 million or so per Congressperson. So, we're basically looking at about a $20 million expenditure if some or all of these teaparty Congresspersons spend at least half their time talking trash before teabaggers. Nice going, anti-govt. types!

I would just cite the preamble to the Constitution everytime. We were required to memorize it and what it meant in 8th Grade Amnerican History Class. I doubt modern day tea party members make it that far. Of course, 1/2 Governor Palin had to go back to the 7th Grade English class for remedial help.

the tea party is a joke that no one takes seriously anymore, in 2009 they seemed like a force to be reckoned with but then their positions were exposed for their contradictory nature. For example they are against the dificit spending but are not for ending the wars and cutting military spending. They talk about lower taxes but our taxes are the lowest they have been in years. They talk about how the government should leave businesses alone but they were complaining that obama did not do enough for the BP oil spill. They are worried that their constitutional rights will be taken away but they support taking away the rights of mexicans and muslims.

It depends on whether the firewalls in the offices of Congress allow Skype through. And if I was the network Admin I would have serious doubts about letting them use Skype as it could be used to piggyback a hacker attack through that port. If I was paranoid, I'd say that could be the intention for the request.
Besides I have a feeling every office in the building has a phone...

Well, I'd love to know the facts.
I worked for a company once that had a strict policy against any downloaded programs whatsoever, seemingly upon such theories, and then I shamed them as one of their international managers: our offices could not have any downloaded programs because of this terrible risk and no exceptions. Were they really then saying that *none* of their headquarters computers had I-Tunes on it, *none?*
I got the policy changed when they were confronted with their gross hypocrisy. Anyhow, seems you know a lot. Wonder how we can get to bottom of this?

July 23, 2010 7:16 PM in reply to Overreach THIS!
I'm no expert, to be honest. I did act as the network admin of a small company a few years back, and we had all our email and web running through a proxy server.
Sadly I didn't know enough to absolutely watertight it, and spam company got control of our server one weekend and used it as a proxy to bounce spam emails all over the net. The Monday when I got in was one of the worst days of my Job there. We had to get in people from outside to block the routers and fix the proxy, and I had constant phone calls from the Phone & Internet provider demanding to know how the work was going. And for months we were finding places that would not accept our emails as our IP was flagged as a spammer.
So, I'm a LITTLE paranoid about network security.
You did mention I-Tunes. I-tunes is a good example btw as it actually sets up a one way feed from the I-Tunes server. In a sense you are pulling the data from I-Tunes and once that feed is over the link is severed. There is very little or nothing going the other way. Besides, while I don't particularly like Apple I would trust their servers are rock solid.
SKYPE sets up a 2 way connection between 2 computers over a network. Data is flowing 2 ways, your voice to your friend and your friends voice to you and its a constant 2 way connection while you are speaking. Even when there is no call but its running, the Skype program maintains a connection to the Skype servers. That raises whole other issues in network security, and to be honest I would not be qualified to talk about it any more than to note that as a concern. I use Skype at home, but I'd have to really look at it to make sure its safe at my workplace.
Not sure how helpful that was, but thanks for listening.

"The first came from Bachmann, who called on Speaker Pelosi to allow the use of the popular video phone service at the Capitol so that caucus members can speak to tea partiers more easily."
The tea partiers need this, as opposed to the rest of the nation who can read what happens on the internet or the papers.
The tea partiers have to have things explained in small worded soundbites from one of the dimmest bulbs in congress.

"Bachmann says the caucus aims to be a "receptacle" in Washington D.C. for the tea party's frustration"
Okay, let me see if I understand this -
When Tea baggers get so frustrated that they feel the need to take matters in their own hand to get relief ... she is volunteering to let the worked up Tea Bagger unburden themselves on themselves on her caucus, to be the "receptacle" for their LOAD of pent-up frustration.
Um ...

these tea-partiers are full of it.. they have yet to mention serious cutbacks in spending they're willing to support in order to reduce the deficit.. it's the same w/all right-wingers: spit out simplistic, demagogic sound-bites about the deficit, but none of them are willing to say what substantial cuts they would favor to reduce the deficit.. the fact they're all in favor of extending the Bush tax cuts for the rich without paying for them demonstrates their hypocrisy better than anything..

"allow the use of the popular video phone service at the Capitol so that caucus members can speak to tea partiers more easily."
How about using that technology within the US Capitol building networked with every congresspersons' and senators' home-state office to legislate from? It would save the taxpayers billions by keeping the lawmakers from traveling so much, and their salivating lobbyists unable to concentrate around them.
Voilà, budget deficit, and even the US debt solved, eventually.

Yea, let's talk about the amateurish Tea Party.
Of late, they've driven major victories in Blue states including Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts. You already have the White House conceding the House to the Republicans because of Tea Party efforts. The icing on the cake is that, in addition to the loser himself, the Tea Party has been instrumental in driving BO's APPROVAL RATING TO ITS LOWEST POINT GIVEN TIME IN OFFICE IN THE HISTORY OF THE POLL(You gotta love that statistic).
Hey, here are a few BO driven statistics released yesterday that you won't find on this loser web-site. Despite a $1 trillion stimulus package, jobless claims were up while home sales plummeted. I see the polls getting even worse for the loser.
In the end, the only thing amateaurish is this BS article written on the basis of wishful thinking.
Goodnight progressive clowns!!

So, the Tea party has been instrumental in getting Obama to have higher ratings than Reagan and Clinton at this point tn their terms? That's a pretty good achievement given the state of the economy. No wonder you used capitals and never mentioned the name of the poll.

The TEA party is real simple. It wants:
1 - fiscal responsibility
2 - return to following the Constitution.
If Bachman doesn't know that, it just shows she's a fake TEA party person, just as Palin is a FAKE.
If anybody does not want either of those, I guess they want to continue deficit spending and making the USA a socialist, Marxist, and/or fascist country. To me, it's easy to choose.
TRUE TEA party people don't care about promoting social agenda items such as race, sexuality, and such.

Oh, that's right Stevor -- just like conservatism, the "TRUE Tea Party" cannot fail; it can only be failed by false or weak disciples.
And I guess with all of the "Obama as Hitler/Stalin/witch-doctor" signs, and the ignorant screaming at town hall meetings to "keep government outta my medicare", the false re-casting of narrow conservative interests as America's general interests, the howling and inarticulate hypocrisy about "big, tax-and-spend government", and the routine threats -- and acts -- of violence directed toward Democrats, Progressives, non-whites, non-Christians, homosexuals and anyone else they don't agree with or approve of, we progressives and liberals and Democrats kinda lost sight of the sensible Constitutional scholarship and the well-informed arguments for consistent fiscal discipline coming from "TRUE Tea Party" people.
And, oddly enough, I don't recall hearing a peep outta you folks while Bush was giving away a budget surplus to the richest of the rich, ignoring actual threats to the country, spending and de-regulating us into record-breaking deficits, starting unnecessary and ham-handed military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan that have had exactly the opposite of the advertised effects, going on vacation while an entire region of the country drowned, and generally treating the Constitution as an inconvenient stumbling block to unchecked, dictatorial executive power.
You wanna bitch and moan because a black guy is in the White House, a woman is Speaker of the House and a Democrat is the Senate majority leader? It's a free country. But please don't pretend for a milli-second that it has anything to do with fiscal or Constitutional principles. Because you can know people by the fruits of their labors. So, while you and a few other self-identified tea partiers, in particular, may have a conscience, the "TRUE Tea Party" has proven to be about conservatives wanting to call the shots at all costs, regardless of fiscal discipline or the Constitution or the consequences for the rest of us.
And if progressives, liberals and Democrats want to call you out for your thoroughly un-American displays of ill-informed Tea Party bigotry, well, it's a free country -- as long as the "TRUE Tea Party" doesn't get a hold of it.
