They're not campaigning on it in earnest -- at least not yet -- but Republican leaders say that, given the power, they would like to do away with Wall Street reform much like they have already discussed repealing health care reform.
"I think it ought to be repealed," said House Minority Leader John Boehner, in response to a question from TPMDC, at his weekly press conference this morning.
One of his top lieutenants, Republican Conference Chair Mike Pence agrees. "We hope [the Senate vote] falters so we can start over," Pence told TPMDC yesterday. "I think the reason you're not hearing talk about efforts to repeal the permanent bailout authority is because the bill hasn't passed yet."
The Senate is expected to pass the final bill and send it off to the President this afternoon. But, despite Republican posturing, the President's signature isn't likely to touch off another broad GOP push for repeal. Unlike health care reform, Wall Street reform is broadly popular -- even with some in the GOP base. The problem for Republicans is that they've dug in deeply, railing against what they call a "permanent bailout bill." It stands to reason that, if the bill truly does institutionalize bailouts, Republicans would want to repeal it. But some aren't willing to say that too loudly.
After a vote this morning, TPMDC asked Lamar Alexander (R-TN), the third ranking Republican in the Senate, whether Republicans would make a concerted push to repeal the financial reform bill.
"Well, that's a good -- that's a good, that's a good question," Alexander said. "We're very disappointed with this...If we have a Congress with a majority of Republicans, and there are ways to improve it or fix it, I imagine there'll be an effort to do that."
Pence suggested much the same.
"I think that should this legislation become law, and I continue to hope earnestly that it does not, House Republicans will be determined to end this era of bailouts and dismantle the principles of too big to fail from the law," Pence said.
What elements of the law would need to be dismantled?
"There's several aspects of that, but I can break that down for you. Let's jump off that bridge when we come to it," Pence said.
"There are common sense things that we should do to plug the holes in the regulatory system that were there, and to bring more transparency to financial transactions," Boehner said. "Because transparency is like sunlight, and sunlight is the best disinfectant."

Because they've bought the myth that if they're good little girlz and boyz, work hard and put all their teeth under the pillow they can be tax evadingly wealthy too.An acquaintance of mine used to posit that people voted Democratic because they had a heart and social conscience, and people voted Republican because they had a sense of humor at how inept Republicans are at governance. They'd be pretty good at ruling if we had a monarchy or a dictatorship of some sort ,but actually governing they're lousy. Too convinced of their own infallible rectitude, too self-centered, self-righteous, and sanctimonious.

You don't know the half of it. I sat next to a guy on a plane one day that was incredibly delusional.
He was going on and on about how GWB was the greatest President ever, and that despite how much of an utter buffoon he appeared to be in public, was really very intelligent. And that GWB had such charisma that you couldn't help but be floored by it upon entering a room he was in.
Then the real crazy juice started spilling from his pie hole. Apparently 'they really did find WMDs in Iraq', but it was several years after the war had started, and GWB just said 'nah, that's ok...we don't need to make it public.'
They're brainwashed, and it's really scary that people can be so blind. It makes me afraid for the future of our species.

That's what concerns me the most about the teabaggers - they've taken the old Republican "big government is bad" line and generalized it to "ALL government is bad". Yet when the average right-winger is asked for detail about their "anti-government" ranting, an asterik appears: "does not include opposition to war. Or concern about civil liberties violations that fall on liberals or minorities. Or remote questioning of spending that PERSONALLY benefits ME..."
They're shallow, willfully ignorant, & largely bigoted. They don't give a fuck about the system except to the extent they foot the bill, which is much less than they bark about.

I just saw this in CQToday: "Speaker Nancy Pelosi insisted Thursday that simmering political discord between some House Democrats and the White House won't derail the party's agenda for the rest of this year. But Republican Leader John A. Boehner scoffed, saying that Congress has been largely paralyzed for months."
So, Boehner's complaining about Congress being paralyzed and at the same time bragging about how his party has been successful at paralyzing it. With material like this, the DNC/DCCC/DSCC should have about a hundred ads in the can already to release between now and November.

Leave the economy alone.

Leave Wall Street alone.
Leave healthcare alone (the way it was before reform)
Leave mega-corporations alone.
Leave the rich alone.
Leave the global warming deniers alone.
Leave Sarah Palin alone.
Leave the Tea Party.
And in so doing we can return to those halcyon days of 2001-2008. Or is it the 1950s?

No, I disagree. I don't think racism should be left alone. It is a social evil that should be confronted and corrected with reason.

There's a massive difference between control and influence. There are legitimate ways to influence the thoughts of others that may be distasteful to me, and which can result in a change in their thinking made of their own free will.

For your information ADad, you know nothing about me. I've got a degenerative illness that would easily qualify me for Disability.
I still work. I work remotely now because I can't walk a lot anymore but I still work an 8 hour day and then some. I know there are always people worse off than I am and that is why I plan to work as long as I can.
I'd rather die than depend on anyone but I recognize that not everyone feels that way. I was raised to never accept charity.
Finally I'm very resourceful. I'm lucky enough to work near NIH so there are always clincial tests going on. I've been a guinea pig when I can't afford my drugs that easily run $1,500 a pop but without them, I would be crippled. I know, I know, I should be shot as a freeloader for not wanting myself to be crippled but as long as I can be a productive citizen, I will be.
You, on the other hand, find nothing better to do than assume what "people like me" do. Well people like you would rather let people die than take the chance that someone too dark for you gets any healthcare. In fact, you'd probably be the one running over the illegal immigrant in the road.
Any other assumptions?

Judging from his ludicrous words (pure sour grapes) and his alcohol induced tan, I think John Boehner needs a designated driver today....does the congress have a drop a dime program for Boehner? Never mind: Cantor and his smurk are there to help Boehner find the door.....because he too is useless at anything except saying "NO".

Doesn't it bother anyone that they can be this blatent about what side they are on....doesn't it worry everyone that Citizens United is Corporate America and what they are going to do to our elections?
The GOP must be pretty confident that even if they show they still are on the side of WALL STREET they don't care about us and we can't do anything about it? WOW....people need to vote these A-holes out and big business!

My question is this, is this financial reform bill any good in the first place? Does Boehner have a point? My understanding is that the bill is extremely weak, and won't do much. Hell, Tea Party favorite (and now, sadly, my senator) Scott Brown made them take out the provision that would have made the financial institutions more responsible and more liable for bad actions/advice.
IS THIS BILL ANY GOOD?

Yes, it is.
Not only is it rather good, it actually got stronger as the process went (beyond a small hiccup at the end).
Is it a grand slam?
No - but I have yet to see the first piece of legislation, as it existed when originally passed, that is/was.
It's definitely a bases clearing double.

This worries me, actually. If they can pretend they are standing against "perpetual bailouts", Americans are in trouble. Democrats are the ones against "too big to fail." "Small Government" means "Big Business." "Deregulation" means "too big to fail."
If the coward Democrats allow Republicans to pretend to occupy the anti-Wall Street position, the facts themselves won't matter.
The media does not call out lies anymore. So who will?

What amazes me is what some of the Repubots post on other sites. IT is truly as if they live in a different reality. Kind of like those Star Trek episodes where there was an alternate universe and the crew were evil and Kirk and Spock had Van Dyke beards and looked menacing.
I'm from Ohio and I'm embarassed that Boehner (BONER) is also.

I think what ultimately will deafen the general population's ability to even consider the long term benefit of financial reform are the unemployment numbers and general state of the economy come November.
I'm not disagreeing with you about its significance. I'm just a cynical bastard who recognizes the power of a corporate-funded bullhorn relentlessly telling them its not in 'everyman's' best interest.

Wow - and I thought the Republican'ts could be more out of touch. No instead of just being obstructionists i.e., the party of NO - they're trying to become the party of Reverse.
They must REALLY hate Obama - 'cause they're willing to do anything to deny him credit for fixing some of the problems he inherited . NO they want to wreck the country again just to make a point?!?!?!

If this is what "obstruction" looks like, I want more of it!
Against Republican obstruction, the White House and Democrats in Congress have passed the largest recovery act in history, the largest increase in student aid since the GI Bill, the most significant health care reform since Medicare, the greatest expansion of community service since Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the biggest investment in renewable energy ever. This week the Congress will pass, again, over virtually unified Republican opposition, the largest reform of finance since the 1930s.

They promise to:
repeal health care
repeal financial reform
repeal what little stimulus we gave
return to the GWB days of 750,000 jobs lost per month
Give another $800 billion bailout to wall street
Lower taxes for those making > $500,000 per year
End Social Security and give Wall St. the balance remaining
My god, that's an agenda any opportunistic con artist can enthusiastically get behind.

The conservative and ultra-right-wing scream machine has convinced millions of mainstream (mainly white middle and working-class wage workers) moderates to vote against their own interests. For twelve years (1995-2007) the Republicans passed mountains of legislation which helped the richest 1% of Americans, eased restrictions and regulations on corporations, and did nothing for the lower 60% of the populace. But the Scream Machine uses every means, including Fundie Christian rhetoric to convince middle America of their righteous cause, while all the while destroying the middle class, and sending decent-paying jobs overseas. The American worker is gradually being reduced to jobs at McDonalds and Wal-Mart.
