Wow. This is the apex of conservative intellect. If you're an unmarried woman, it's because you kicked your husband out. Not because you hadn't married in the first place. Not because you were married but your husband was beating the crap out of you and your kids. Not because your husband was cavorting with hookers and you risked getting STDs if you stuck with him. Not because your husband turned out to be a closeted gay who covered for it by marrying you and persecuting other gays. Nope, it's because you were married to a perfectly wonderful guy and decided to kick him out and, naturally, go on welfare.

Thank you, Phyllis, for once again reliably demonstrating for us how thoroughly jacked the right-wing brain is.

So ladies, don't leave your man when he uses you for a punching bag because, gawd forbid, you might need a hand, which could cost Phyllis Schlafly at couple of cents.

I used to have a lapel button in the 80s that said, "Phyllis Schlafly is a female impersonator." Looks like it's still true.

I thought I remembered another one of the top conservative pundits saying the same thing a year or so ago.

I'm single, too, and I'd like to think at least a few unmarried women voted for Obama because they realized McCain and Palin had no business shaping foreign policy, among other disincentives to vote for them.

Wait a minute--I had a husband? I kicked him out? I don't remember doing that.

Anybody know if she's related to the Schlafly brewery people in St. Louis? If so, I expect them to renounce the old witch too.

Schlafly is fascinating, isn't she? A housewife who abandoned her family to travel all around the country enjoining women to stay at home with their families.

And now she claims that unmarried (although actually she seems to mean divorced, yes?) women can no longer support themselves because they've kicked out their husbands--but I suspect Ms Schlafly herself has not relied on the financial support of her better half for quite some time.

Now, I'm a single woman who voted for Obama, and I am divorced--have been for 25 years. So, since I've been able to support myself in three decades, it's a pretty sure bet that I didn't need Obama to create a welfare state for my benefit.

I recall that Schlafly styled herself as a good Christian woman, but she seems wholly opposed to social welfare--though I've never heard tell of her decrying the money the government spends on corporate welfare. I rather wish that the Second Coming *was* imminent, so I could watch a new Jesus boot these moneylenders out of his temple.

It's a sad commentary on these soi-disant Christians that this single woman voted for a president who would help those less fortunate, which they seem to view as the ultimate governmental offense.

I'd tend to believe, as well, that anyone who starts railing about welfare queens in the age of Obama is yet another person with a not-so-well hidden racial agenda.

The blinders these folks have on that allow them to look in the mirror without retching are impressive things!
