Conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly took aim at "unmarried women" at a recent fundraiser and in an interview with TPM, saying that they overwhelmingly support President Obama and are all on welfare. Democrats aim to exploit the comments to pressure the more than 60 Republican candidates who have earned Schlafly's endorsement.
"Unmarried women, 70% of unmarried women, voted for Obama, and this is because when you kick your husband out, you've got to have big brother government to be your provider," said Schlafly, president of Eagle Forum and infamous for her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment.
A liberal organization recorded the Schlafly comments at a Troy, Michigan fundraiser Saturday for a Republican congressional candidate, the Detroit Free Press reported. In an interview with TPM this afternoon Schlafly stood by her comments and said Obama is trying to boost welfare rolls to help with his reelection and to help Democrats.
"Yes I said that. It's true, too. All welfare goes to unmarried moms," Schlafly told TPM. "They are trying to line up their constituency for Obama and Democrats against Republican candidates."
She also told me she doesn't care if Republicans are targeted over her comments since she thinks they are truthful.
Democrats plan to jump on the 75 Republican candidates for federal office that Schlafly's Eagle Forum has endorsed and donated to -- a list that includes Todd Tiahrt in the Kansas Republican primary for Senate, Ken Buck in the Colorado Republican primary for Senate, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) and his Senate Conservatives Fund and Sen. David Vitter. Already, reporters in Vitter's home state of Louisiana are getting releases from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee pressing them to ask Vitter if he agrees with Schlafly. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is doing the same thing to Eagle Forum-endorsed House candidates, painting Republicans on dozens of ballots -- including Rep. Michele Bachmann and Scott Rigell in the competitive VA-02 race -- as "extreme" and saying the candidate should refuse Schlafly's endorsement.
A Democratic source provided the totals Eagle Forum has donated to Senate candidates, which we are verifying with the FEC now.
This year they gave Sharron Angle (R-NV) $5,000, Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) $7,000, Marco Rubio (R-FL) $4,000, former Rep. Pat Toomey $1,500 and $2,000 to Vitter.
Congressional candidate Andrew (Rocky) Raczkowski said he was surprised by Schlafly's remarks at his fundraiser and said he disagrees with Schlafly after liberals and his Republican primary opponent Paul Welday called on him to denounce her.

I know this is OT (and completely inappropriate), but an old boyfriend of mine owned the magazine shop where Phyllis's (late) husband used to buy his porn after Sunday mass. So I'm thinking earning $14 the hard way for her would be, well, the hard way. (BTW, there's nothing wrong with buying porn, it's just the Schlafly hypocrisy that I'm calling out.)

Far from it... I've long felt like the prophet in the wilderness, trying to alert everyone to the power and hatefulness of this woman. When I heard her on Tom Ashbrook's On Point show during the 2008 convention, I wept tears of anger. I've no doubt that she is pulling many, if not most, of the strings on the conservative side of the GOP. Somehow, she manages to be mostly ignored by MSM/bloggers/you-name-it. Two years ago, she was stating that Sarah Palin is the leader of the GOP, that McCain was only doing what her peeps were telling him to do, and that Bush 43 was no longer on their radar.
If anyone has 45 minutes to spare, I highly recommend listening to this broadcast: http://www.onpointradio.org/2008/09/the-soul-of-the-gop
She even gives the normally unflappable Ashbrook pause when she states: "If Sarah Palin had been a Democrat, she would have aborted her baby." The following day, his guests were two friends from his Baptist church - lifelong Democrats with a Down's Syndrome child.

All of the above.
You know, there's really nothing more completely repugnant than the hypocrisy of the self-righteous, particularly when their own home front and / or personal behavior doesn't even come close to meeting their exacting public standards for private conduct.
In that regard, Phyllis Schafley, Larry Craig and Clarence Thomas all truly deserve to share a suite in Hell together.

What's especially laughable/outrageous is the notion that women with children are kicking the fathers out. What a self-serving, self-hating screed (yes, it's both). Men have been abandoning their children since humans climbed up onto two feet. That's why people invented the contract called marriage.

The leading cause of death for pregnant women is not homicide: how ridiculous. The total number of homicides in the US is a bit under 10,000 per year ,and the majority of those victims (by far) are male.
The number of pregnant women who die each year is a huge number over 10,000: most of those die from medical complications related to pregnancy (usually vein issues); second biggest cause is vehicle accidents. Look up the numbers.
The urban myth you are repeating is from one incredibly ludicrous "study" that has been discredited for years: based on a study sample of a few dozen, all in Baltimore, picked from a sample ridiculously weighted towards domestic violence victims. Seriously, google up a few facts, the claim you're making is just ridiculous.

Wow. This is the apex of conservative intellect. If you're an unmarried woman, it's because you kicked your husband out. Not because you hadn't married in the first place. Not because you were married but your husband was beating the crap out of you and your kids. Not because your husband was cavorting with hookers and you risked getting STDs if you stuck with him. Not because your husband turned out to be a closeted gay who covered for it by marrying you and persecuting other gays. Nope, it's because you were married to a perfectly wonderful guy and decided to kick him out and, naturally, go on welfare.
Thank you, Phyllis, for once again reliably demonstrating for us how thoroughly jacked the right-wing brain is.

No, she believes in rape. But she only believes in rape when the perpetrator has been identified as a (sing along, you know the chorus) black male, between the age of 15 and 45, between 5'5" and 6'3, between 135 and 250 lbs, wearing pants, some form of shirt, shoes of some nature, has hair. Ok, so I got curious and went looking for Nate's analysis.
Turns out not only did Obama get 95% of the black vote, he also got at least 70% of:
1)People making less than $15k/year (73%)
2)Jews (78%)
3)People without a religion (75%)
4)People whose religion was identified as "other" (73%)
5)Gays and Lesbians (70%)
He also came quite close with Latinos and amongst all people 18-29. Interestingly, even John Kerry managed over 70% of all the groups enumerated above save "other" religions and <$15k incomes.
So, yes. 70% of ANY demographic has indeed voted for someone.

I see. Well, if you were trying to allude to low turnout in your original post, you certainly hid it well. Also, it's really useless to try to break it out that way. Just to illustrate, take a look at these three (true) statements:
1)22.6% of Americans voted for Obama
2)30% of eligible American voters voted for Obama
3)52.9% of voters voted for Obama
Is there any reason at all to ever quote someone the first two? Does that tell you anything about the support he got? Nope. So when you talk about 70% of a demographic voting for someone, we automatically restrict that to those who voted...because that's the only thing that makes any sense.

In fairness, the 78% of Jewish voters who went for Obama? Only about 55% were because they really liked Obama. The other 23% was because they loathe Sarah Palin. (as we've gotten to know her better since 2008, I predict that if Sarah gets the 2012 nomination, Jews will vote 85% for Obama. We hate her a whole lot.)

There is no one who is less qualified than McCain for the position of POTUS; with the sole exception of Sarah Palin, of course, who is not even qualified to be, as Ugg might say, a walksupright person.

Exactly what I was thinking, too.
As a single woman who has been self-supporting for more than 30 years, I should be infuriated at her remarks, but I find it hard to work up any reaction beyond rolling my eyes. And I guess that's because I have known for most of my life that she is an ignorant, narrow-minded, spiteful woman whose opinion I don't consider worth a bucket of warm spit.
It would, however, be delicious to see her become the agent of her own downfall.

Schlafly does not speak for this generation. She is a throwback to an America where women were subjugated by men, forced into marriage for fiscal reasons, and relied upon a single income brought home by a man. Her dream paradigm for America hasn't been feasible for decades. Does she think that the government should let single woman and their children die for her principles, simply because our society does not help families in need raise our next generation? Doesn't sound very pro-life.

NST as 'pro-lifers.' She's a pro-birther.
No help to the mother or family before the birth, no help to the family and new child AFTER the birth, "in life" as it were. Just promote BIRTH!
BTW, this is not to be confused with 'birthers', although there is a large overlap between those populations.

I'm not even sure they are pro-fetus -- I think that's just a cover. I think they are simply pro-subjugation-of-women. If they were pro-fetus, they would be solidly in favor of programs like WIC to be sure that prospective mothers got the proper nutrition, and in favor of Medicaid to be sure they got proper pre-natal care. I haven't seen pro-life groups coming out strongly in favor of those things.
I have, however, seen them enthusiastically back programs that would jail pregnant women for the remainder of their pregnancy for doing things that might potentially be harmful to a fetus.

The great thing about conservative thinking is, you don;t have to have any proof of your statements, it just has to SEEM true enough (Colbert's "truthiness")-- I could offer a plausible reason of my own, and if it fits conservative thinking then it passes, proof or not.
How many Obama voters really thought "oh boy, big government, welfare, I won't have to work" when they went into the voting booth? (And how many thought "jeez, McCain is losing his mind, and Palin is a simplistic idiot.")

Schlafly is fascinating, isn't she? A housewife who abandoned her family to travel all around the country enjoining women to stay at home with their families.
And now she claims that unmarried (although actually she seems to mean divorced, yes?) women can no longer support themselves because they've kicked out their husbands--but I suspect Ms Schlafly herself has not relied on the financial support of her better half for quite some time.
Now, I'm a single woman who voted for Obama, and I am divorced--have been for 25 years. So, since I've been able to support myself in three decades, it's a pretty sure bet that I didn't need Obama to create a welfare state for my benefit.
I recall that Schlafly styled herself as a good Christian woman, but she seems wholly opposed to social welfare--though I've never heard tell of her decrying the money the government spends on corporate welfare. I rather wish that the Second Coming *was* imminent, so I could watch a new Jesus boot these moneylenders out of his temple.
It's a sad commentary on these soi-disant Christians that this single woman voted for a president who would help those less fortunate, which they seem to view as the ultimate governmental offense.
I'd tend to believe, as well, that anyone who starts railing about welfare queens in the age of Obama is yet another person with a not-so-well hidden racial agenda.
The blinders these folks have on that allow them to look in the mirror without retching are impressive things!

Well...
John Birch performed heroic deeds in WWII - including helping members of the Doolittle raid to safety - and I suppose that I can accept calling one that performs heroic deeds a hero in that sense.
However, he was also a fundamentalist zealot who, had it not been for WWII, would have almost certainly made a career out of destroying anyone (including fellow believers) that didn't have meet his high bar for fundamentalist fervor.
No one can know for sure, of course, but I have serious doubts that had he not met his end at the hands of Chinese Communists as WWII drew to a close and the Chinese Civil War went into full swing -- he'd have disapproved of the JBS in any meaningful way.

Someone points out how ridiculously imperceptive you've been and you reiterate how "offended" you are...and then one minute later you post a comment making fun of the way an octogenarian looks!
Seriously, you think a comment about the President's penis is offensive, but it's fine to make fun of old people for not being pretty? Seriously? Like, for real?
I'm OK with one or the other. You can be offended about harmless jokes, if you aren't making fun of old people. You can make fun of old people if you don't mind the dick jokes. Obviously a product of marrying into money....she should be careful.....she might be correctly labeled as prostitute when one connects the dots on her views:
From wikipedia on Phyllis:
She also said, at a March 2007 speech at Bates College, "By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don't think you can call it rape."
One of her sons his gay....and dear Phyllis is on the record of saying that even though he's gay, he supports her political views. Phyllis has made a lifetime of opposing equal rights....I'm sure he's thrilled with Phyllis over that one.
Schlafly's career demonstrated "anti-intellectualism in pursuit of a political agenda.....in other words, either rewrite history to fit your argument or ignore the facts in total.
The far right in this country are amazing....as well as dangerous. No wonder we don't learn from our historically documented mistakes....

I never understood why, at a basic logical level, the whole "people on welfare vote for Democrats who give them moar welfare" thing (regardless of its actual truth) was so terrible. Yes, people are motivated to do things that help them - pretty basic logic.
On the other hand, middle-class people voting for a party that has consistently taken every step possible to destroy the middle class while transferring money upward - that just doesn't make sense. It's like paying a hitman to kill yourself.

Hey guys, maybe we're jumping on her words too quickly. Maybe she's been "taken out of context" (in Fox-speak, that means quoted accurately).
C'mon, I bet if we let the audio play out for another 5 minutes, she'll end up saying, "Just kidding! President Obama is a great man and doing the best he can with all the crackpots and idiots spouting untruths like the one I randomly made 5 minutes ago."
I mean, it's possible, right?

What would the republicans do for unmarried women? And,in fact, what would the Republicans care to do for anybody except the wealthy who bankroll these bought politicians. So now they know that unmarried women voted for Obama, what do they intend to do to court these voters? NOT A DAMNED THING! Their plan is to disenfranchise them, and failing that starve them, literally.

Nah, I remember this old bat from the ERA wars. She really, truly thinks single women are an evil influence and a threat to proper society. She really is saying that the only proper role for women in this world is to marry, tend a household, and raise children. She's very 19th-century retro in that way. (And even in the 19th century, there were women who of necessity earned their own way in life, but they were always frowned upon as coarse and unfeminine by proper ladies.)

Why is it that all of these RECYCLED has beens from the past keep popping up over there at Republican Nation? What is wrong with being a single mom raising a child on food stamps? Some single moms might be suffering with cancer and therefore cannot work. She has kids that need medical care and food to survive. I suppose Phyllis believes they all should suffer and wither away.
I have ALWAYS believed that Republicans will do whatever possible to give everything to the rich even if it means taking food out of the mouths of widows and orphans. These creeps really do look down on the poor, disabled and helpless. Furthermore, if Republicans could have death panels THEY WOULD and Phyllis would be the chairwoman! MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON THEIR SOULS! This witch is Sarah! Palin's twin.

Phyllis is an OT (Original Teabagger). Her conspiracy theories and Southern Strategy sex appeal riled the radical right and helped Goldwater win the Republican nomination in 1964. Of course, he then went on to only carry 6 states (AZ, LA, MS, AL, GA and SC).
Looks like old girl is trying to work that same magic again.

Aside from her rather bizarre assumption that all single mothers are in that status by their own election, she clearly hasn't considered the implications of this. Is she advocating that fathers be forced to marry AND live with the mothers of their children or (right-to-lifers get on this one) is she suggesting that pregnant single women should get or be FORCED to have abortions if they can't support a child if the pregnancy continues to term?

Also, you know, some women become unmarried women when their husbands divorce them while they're recovering from surgery for cancer.
And then some other women become unmarried women because they married the guy who was cheating on his first wife in the hospital with cancer, and then that guy, shocking, dumps them for a younger model.
But you know, family values, yada yada.

I wonder why it is that Democrats have no problem ringing in on this kind of petty bullshit but they refuse to defend their own positions and agenda in similar manner? They love preening and primping for the cameras on this kind of thing that is completely lacking in substance but when the idea of standing up and denouncing Republicans for their strategy of fillibustering everything they are nearly silent. When they are attacked as "socialists", "communists", and being "soft on terrorism" they cower in the corners hoping the mean, mean Republicans will stop saying those nasty things about them. I'd love to hear what her favored Senator from Louisiana David Vitter thinks of these remarks. Perhaps he can be asked if instead of welfare, he thinks unmarried women should get jobs as prostitutes, thus driving down the price for his diaper sex!? Clearly, he thinks women working at brothels is a good thing, as he patronized them frequently, until getting caught. Come to think of it, he should be asked how many times exactly, since getting fingered as a client he has returned to whorehouses?

I want to know if Phyllis ever considered that those unmarried women voted for Obama because they wanted the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed and signed into law.
If you don't believe women should have jobs and careers, it probably doesn't occur to you that those who do, want to be paid the same as the ones with different gonads that do the same job.
Then again, given Schafly's opinion of women, she probably helped convince the 30% who didn't vote for Obama that they aren't worthy of equal pay.

Because Sheehan came across as a self-serving protester who wanted to make it more about her, and her "crusade." She wore it out.
Publicly grieving isn't always the best route take.
Regardless of your rage, and frustration in life, when addressing issues that affect millions of people, it's sometimes best to consider tact, and other strategies that are more engaging to a broader swathe of people.

Typical TP posts.
So, you might not think someone is pretty by your standards or agrees with your lifestyle or divorce viewpoint—who cares?
Where is the meaningful discussion about the real problem, about the lack of true fathers—not the sperm donor types--but the real missing ones of today; those that aren’t perverted by pornography and by a sexualized culture that objectifies women and then allows men to freely easily leave their spouse because they don’t meet their “standard?”
Where is the discussion about true fathers who genuinely care about their spouse and their children?
Where is the discussion on how we care and are helping prevent the havoc and pain that divorce causes?
Sad.

She was attacked the same way when she fought against implementation of the ERA. She was right on that, anyone think it should pass now?
Fact: Married women vote Republican, unmarried women vote Democrat (By large majorities)(and no this doesn't apply to every single example)(jeez, you got to put disclaimers on everything on this site)
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/polls/#val=USP00p3
Fact: Liberals don't attack her facts, they attack her for being old, being ugly, being a bitch, being a bigot, being an old hag, being heartless, being hateful, being evil etc.. etc.. (sample of just the comments here)
Counting down for the "Raaaacist!" label to be thrown her way. The latest catchall insult that has the benefit of dehumanizing, and demonizing the target and is used at the drop of a hat these days.

Actually, you should look at these statistics a bit more carefully. To say that "married women vote Republican by large majorities" is not true even in the statistics you pointed out. It was only a 2% difference which is within the statistic error of the poll. So it's essentially a "wash".
Also, if you look at the more detailed statistics you actually see it's higher for married women with no kids. I think that's true because married women with no kids haven't had to go through the many different horrors (insurance, welfare, divorce, etc) related to having kids. Many of Obama's issues simply do not affect this subset of the population.
That said, I bet if they added in "education" and "income level" you would find that a LARGE majority of well-educated, middle-class working married women voted almost exclusively for Obama.
The times we are living in are very chaotic and the issues we face are very complex. You either have to be living in the crisis each day (e.g. unmarried single mothers) or you have to be educated enough in micro and macro economics to truly understand the depth of the crisis we are truly in. Some people just haven't yet experienced the crisis firsthand so don't understand it.

I did taxes in the inner city for 7 years - the redistribution of wealth was huge back then, now it's even more unbelievable - people don't have a clue about this.
Example: An identical 2009 W-2 income of $15,000 but 3 different filing status results.
Single person ended up with $568 in taxes which was reduced by the $400 make work pay credit in 2009, so $168 of tax.
Married couple owe no taxes and got $800 of make work pay credit and $261 of Earned Income credit
Head of Household single parent of 2 owed no taxes and got a refund of $7228
The head of household single parent of 2 with an income of $15000 paid no income tax and got $5028 of EIC, $1800 of Child tax credit and $400 of make work pay. Plus a big NYS refund (they match Fed credits by 30%) and probably a whole list of other housing, food stamp and medical benefits. Matter of fact the single parent of 2 would have to make at least $40000 before any Federal income tax might appear instead of some refund.
Ms. Schlafly was kind and mild in her description of what is really going on.
Conclusion from an experienced Enrolled Agent.

And republicans and teabaggers wonder why people call them evil.
Look, I am not saying that all are like this...woman. But if not, then they need to denounce her hateful words. Does this woman actually claim to be a Christian? I mean seriously, can she see Jesus talking like this about, well anyone? How can republicans tolerate this high level of hypocrisy?
Bleh, I am getting frustrated, so I will stop typing now.

Ah....the female who DEFINES the term "miserable old hypocritical battle-ax". I always loved it back in the 1970s when she was touring the country, the wife of a wealthy attorney telling women that they should NEVER work outside the home! She insisted that a woman should greet her husband every day when he came home from work. At the time, a heavily mortgaged economy thanks to heavy inflation, most women HAD to work. She didn't but but she was never home either. She was out shilling her stupid books. I wish this old bag would just RETIRE! SHEEESH!
