Former Nevada state Rep. Sharron Angle, the Republican nominee against Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, has developed a love-hate relationship with the press. She sure seems to love the conservative press, who welcome her to say whatever she wants and even ask viewers for money -- and hates the mainstream media that have that annoying habit of constantly catching her saying damaging stuff. And if anything, the reassuring and friendly environment of conservative media interviews only leaves her more open to saying damaging stuff.
After Angle's victory in the June 8 primary, it quickly became clear that she wasn't exactly open with the press. During her first visit to Capitol Hill the very next week, she took back and side doors to avoid reporters. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said that it was "going to take a few weeks" before the press would have access to her.
Back in Nevada just a couple days later, Angle fled a dogged local TV reporter who followed her through the parking lot, peppering her with tough questions that she wouldn't answer. Watch it. A couple days later, another local news station resorted to begging for an interview. They didn't get it.
In an interview this month with the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody, Angle bluntly explained that "the whole point of an interview is to use it -- like they say 'earned media' -- to earn something with it. And I'm not going to earn anything from people who are there to badger me and use my words to batter me with." She also explained why she wasn't sitting down with the likes of Meet The Press or This Week: "Well, in that audience, will they let me say, 'I need $25 from a million people. Go to SharronAngle.com, send money?' Will they let me say that?" No, they probably won't.
Indeed, get a look at the list of media hosts to whom Angle has been open: Laura Ingraham, Lars Larson, Heidi Harris, Mark Levin and the whole crew at Fox News. With that said, it's precisely those venues where she says stuff that gets her in trouble with the mainstream media. For example, it was during an interview with Larson in January that Angle floated the idea of "Second Amendment remedies" as a check on Congress -- for which Angle later dodged questions from local mainstream reporters in Nevada. She eventually did back away in June from this seeming suggestion of armed revolution, during an interview with Jon Ralston, one of the top reporters in the state -- and one of the few mainstream media appearances she's actually done.
It was also during an appearance in early July with conservative talker Alan Stock that Angle opposed the $20 billion BP escrow account as a "slush fund", a comment that she quickly recanted the very next day.
Angle's more recent attempts to reach out to the press have been something of a strange mess. For example, this past Wednesday she held a "press conference" at which she took no questions, and suddenly walked away from reporters. Here is the Nevada Dems' tracking video:
The very next day, she held another event at which she would take questions -- but only about estate tax repeal, her spokesperson said:
So what has this style gotten her? Well, on the bright side, her dedication to fundraising has worked out. She quickly replenished her coffers after the primary, taking in more money than Reid himself during the same period, though Reid maintains a strong cash-on-hand ratio against her. On the other hand, the continued press coverage of her gaffes and reporter-dodging has served to wear her down -- and played into Reid's efforts to paint her as extreme -- with Reid taking a lead in the TPM Poll Average of 44.0%-43.1%.

Maybe if she had a better ass, she would be "lookin' good". Because that's all her fans get to see of her, as she runs away from cameras.
The whole Republican/wingnut/teabagger "librul media" thing is about how God-fearin' Amurcuns are sick and tired of the "lame stream media", and therefore, any diss to them is considered a RW "you go, girl!" But it's hard to go to that well, as many times as Angle does, before those outside of her hardcore, chromosome-damaged sycophants start saying, "WTF?!?".
That's why this race may be a microcosm of the national election scene in November, which conventional wisdom has been flogging as The End Of Democrats As We Know Them.
If we assume that 90% of the "highly motivated" extreme RW voters put down their Buds, get off their daughters, and leave the trailer and find the polling place, all that needs to be matched is roughly the same enthusiasm/find-the-polling-place level among Dems and independents.
The MSM has instructed us for at least a year that this will not happen. On the contrary, I think there could be enough Angle-type situations around the land, between now and November, who can water-down any enthusiasm that was there in the first place. And stir enough concern on the other side to motivate more Democrats to vote in the midterms, as soon as they grasp the real stakes of letting extremists take over.
I'm feeling a gain for Republicans in both Houses, but that's it; no majority. The media has been treating the November elections like they were a month ago. You have no idea the toes these people are capable shooting off themselves, in the interim.
And you can start with Presumed Majority Leader Boehner's oath to "repeal" health care reform... all the Dems have to do is use it, unabashedly, and they can blow a hole in the R's a continent wide.

I totally agree with you on the results. Plus every day hundreds of people find out they have cancer or have a heart attack or some such other major medical situation, now they can no longer be denied for a preexisting condition and now they have no fear of recission. And then there are now seniors whose medicines are more fully paid. Furthermore I predict that the tea party will start to fade away after that. I mean if you look at their paradoxical stance on the issues, they are already a joke.

If Sharron can't respond to the members of the Press, how can she respond to the members of the public she is asking to represent?
If Angle is elected Senator then she will belong only to a very small clique of extremists and will not deal with anyone else. She has clearly proven that in the time since she won the nomination.
No real surprise, though. That's the position the Republican Party in general has been moving towards since the Goldwater debacle. What do they want? A political coup.

Doncha know, press conferences are not to inform the public. They're for propaganda purposes. If she can't get a boost from every appearance, she's not gonna appear.
Walking out of a press conference as the cameras rolled because she didn't want to talk about topics not on her ideological agenda provided plenty of fodder for Harry Reid's campaign.

Unfortunately, those who follow Angle aren't too clever when it comes to reading the handwriting on the wall. If by some strange chance of fate, Angle surprises everyone and unseats Harry, as soon as she walks into the Senate Chambers, someone from the republican side is going to read her the riot act...do what you're told and act as instructed or you'll find yourself cast adrift without a life preserver.
It'll be a waste of 6 years and Nevada will get the screws, courtesy of the GOP.

I think it's very telling how she characterizes the "utility" of interviews with the press. That is, in the sympathetic right wing media, she can parrot tea party talking points and get no challenge, therefore she admits it's there to score easy point with her base; when it comes to national mainstream media, the only "value" it would have for her is as an upaid political advertisement, for the ability to reach 10 million and scam a few dollars from them. Honest presentation of herself and her position? Not so much.

The "hide from the media" strategy has worded well for Sarah Palin. When you are inarticulate and totally ignorant of the complicated problems our country faces, the strategy is to hide from questions, repeat meaningless talking points, throw some red meat to your base, and hope enough voters are similarly ignorant that they will vote for you anyway.

No he doesn't run away, he doesn't let them get close in the first place. Let me seeee. The latest example; Prez signs "historic financial regulation bill" but no reporters allowed at signing because he didn't want to answer questions that may pop up about Ms Sherrods firing. Exactly how many press conferences has he had. He's had more vacations than press conferences. So don't whine about others not facing an inquisitive press.

"Let me seeee."
Your speeling cud use sum werk.
"The latest example; Prez signs "historic financial regulation bill" but no reporters allowed at signing"
Shrug. And?
"because he didn't want to answer questions that may pop up about Ms Sherrods firing."
That's merely speculation on your part. You have no evidence of that; nor do you possess any special insight into the President's behavior and motives.
"Exactly how many press conferences has he had."
Go ahead, tell me. And then tell me how many the last five Presidents have had at this point in their Presidencies. Go ahead, smart guy -- look it up. I don't think you'll be happy with what you find.
"He's had more vacations than press conferences."
Actually, at this point in his Presidency, President Bush had spent more than *twice* as many days on vacation as President Obama has -- and 9/11 had already occurred by this point in Bush's first term.
"So don't whine about others not facing an inquisitive press."
I didn't "whine;" you did. You're also whining about a President taking less than half the vacation time his failure of a predecessor did.
You're pathetic, and so are your arguments.

I kind of understand how Sharon Angle feels relative to the MSM.
Having once ran for office, the media would frequently get their information wrong. However, it is the obligation of the candidate (if they wish to be elected) to work with the MSM to covey the facts as you see it, rather than run and hide. Sharon Angle is a coward. How could anyone expect her to stand up for the people of Nevada, if she can't even stand up for herself in front of the media.

Like all these conservatard sociopaths, Angle appears to be utterly and deliciously oblivious to her sickness. In her world and the world of her supporters, a candidate for public office is perfectly entitled to bluntly ask for money while they bluntly refuse to answer questions and they bluntly avoid talking about their own controversial, nonsensical views. In essence, all her actions are an admission that she really doesn't give a f--- about anything but being elected. And the brain-dead morons that will vote for her are totally okay with that.
