You have to give Tom Emmer credit. When the presumptive Republican nominee for governor of Minnesota held a town hall meeting with waiters on Wednesday -- as part of a damage control effort after he publicly complained that they were making over $100,000 per year in tips and hurting their employers -- his campaign clearly was not screening the attendees.
TheĀ event Wednesday was supposed to last for an hour and a half. Instead, it ended a half-hour early, as the Star Tribune reports: "An hour later, he walked out after a bag of 2,000 pennies was dumped inches from his face by a man exclaiming, 'I have a tip for you too, Emmer!' as cascading pennies bounced in every direction and the crowd at a Roseville restaurant erupted into chaos."
Check out some truly amazing photos.
Here is the video of the pennies getting dumped, courtesy of The Uptake:
Emmer last week voiced his support for a policy known as a "tip credit," which is used in 43 states but not in Minnesota, which allows employers to pay a lower minimum wage to waiters -- as low as $2.13 per hour, depending on the implementation, by crediting their tips towards the $7.25 federal requirement. Emmer especially got himself in trouble when he said: "With the tips that they get to take home, there are some that are earning over $100,000 a year -- more than the very people that are providing the jobs and investing not only their life savings but their family's future. Something has to be done about that."
Since then his damage control efforts have included waiting tables, and insisting that he does not want to cut wages at all, but would only institute a tip credit as part of a package that would raise the overall minimum wage while keeping tipped employees at the current level. (On the other hand, he also opposes raising the minimum wage, and in 2005 he introduced a proposal to abolish it entirely, calling it a "true form of socialism.") His damage control has also included this town hall event -- which like all the other attempts, he might have been better off never doing at all.
During the town hall meeting before a crowd of 200 people, Emmer fielded one tough question after another. For example, as our friends at The Uptake show here, one waiter opened by saying he only made $19 in tips at lunch that day, and then asked Emmer about his past proposal to abolish the minimum wage.
"Now I believe a minimum wage actually frustrates somebody's ability to make more than the minimum wage," Emmer said, which the crowd didn't like. "You don't have to agree with me on that -- hey, please, I'll be respectful of you all, and I ask in return is whether you disagree or not just give me a chance to tell you why."
He further explained: "I believe that you, if you excel, you're the best server in the house, you should be allowed to make more than the minimum wage. And if maybe you're not the best, maybe you're the weakest, maybe you should make a little bit less and be able to work your way up. I think it allows people to do better." Again, the crowd didn't like this.
He also bluntly admitted his error on the $100,000 claim: "By the way, on the $100,000 number, that was used as an -- and I see you shaking your head. All I did was repeat what I was told by Joe the owner, who since has said, 'No, no, he misunderstood me. I said there's a possibility to make a hundred -- you know what, that isn't the point. It's not the amount. The idea was not about, 'Oh, servers are making too much money.' I want servers to make as much money as they can. Okay?"
Here is another clip, of a waitress reading through news clips of Emmer's statements, and yelling at Emmer that "I work damn hard for my money" before getting suddenly cut off by a ringing bell and Emmer's official timekeeper:
Emmer responded: "Connie, you've absolutely, if you want to say it, put me in my place, if that's what I said. So let's get a couple of things straight. I never said cut your wages. (booing) Connie. Let me just do this again. Just because it's written in the paper, alright, the headline said 'Emmer proposes cutting minimum wage.' I'm gonna tell you right now, that is totally false."

One thing... I live in Plymouth [western 'burb of Minneapolis]. I agree with everything that's being said about how ill-informed and out-of-touch this guy is [a true George Bush versus the checkout scanner moment], but I gotta give the guy credit. He's not dodging the issue, he's diving right into the lion's den. There have been several news stories out here quoting anonymous sources that say his campaign advisors - David Strom [the local Grover Norquist] being one of them] - are telling him to shut up about it. Instead, he's ignoring them and standing up for what he said.
It may not be good politics, but it's outside the usual norm for politicians. I certainly won't vote for him, but it'll score some moral points from some of the voters.

Couldn't agree with you more. But I think Matt Taibbi nailed it in his Rolling Stone blog on George Steinbrenner yesterday:In no other country do people genuinely love their bosses the way Americans do. They'll go home after 12 hard hours of capricious superiors peeing in their faces, and the very first thing they'll do is call up some talk radio show and denounce the graduated income tax that gives them a break at their bosses' expense. In other countries bosses need to constantly fend off revolts and strikes; in America people tune in by the millions to cheer on an impetuous, bloated asshole like Donald Trump as he ritualistically fires a succession of sheepish sacrificial stand-ins who are clearly chosen for their resemblance to the target demographic.

One attendee said she hadn't heard of Emmer before. I did some doorknocking this weekend, and people who aren't actively engaged just haven't started tuning in. Low-wage workers especially put in long hours and don't have much time for news or politics. That's part of the disaster for Emmer: this is the first many people have ever heard of him. But is also explains why other workers aren't doing this. They aren't seeing the immediate threat, while people who work for tips see an immediate threat to their livelihood.
But it also explains why people on the Gulf Coast still support the oil industry. As they see it, that's their jobs, and they fear anything that seems like a change, even if that change is now unavoidable.

fwiw, Holland is WEST MI, not SW MI. When describing the regions of Michigan, Ottawa County is not generally described as SW. but, yes, West MI is very conservative particularly among the Dutch, who, not surprisingly make up a good % of the residents of Holland. SW MI is pretty conservative, too, but Ottawa County in West MI is usually the deepest red spot on the map.

Second, I assume that his bill also prevents restaurant owners from pooling tips, which means that inept servers take home money from the work of excellent servers.

They vote the way they do for two main reasons, as far as I can tell.
First, because they think Jesus wants them to vote a certain way, as indicated by the words of their preachers.
Second, because they have been brainwashed by said preachers, or AM radio personalities, or family members to believe that simply calling someone a "dirty liberal," or a "socialist," is enough to refute any sane, logical argument on economics, foreign policy, domestic policy, etc.
You can show them all the research that has ever been done that shows cutting taxes and/or reducing government spending is bad during a recession, but if your opponent calls you a liberal, well, end of discussion. You lose.
As one of the causes of death, the obituary for the American empire will list "a critical percentage of the electorate simply lost the ability to vote in favor of its own economic and social self interest."

The Uptake, which recorded the event, lives on viewer donations. Without the Uptake, no one would have shown most of the senate recount, and we wouldn't be able to knock down GOBP conspiracy charges so readily had not every moment been webcast. They also got a lot of the footage of the GOBP convention in St. Paul, which is why there's documentation of what really went on in the streets. They have an hour radio show every day, Quick On The Uptake, which they stream on their site at 5:00 central, though the host who sets that up is off this week and next and it's over the air or the KTNF AM webstream. When he gets back though, there's a a web cast with a live blog for listeners. http://www.theuptake.org

One more thought. This tip penalty issue --- tip PENALTY, not tip CREDIT --- has really resonated, and it's a great economic issue for Democrats at a time the when economy is killing them. How about Making a bigger issue out of it, and trying to repeal it at the federal level? We don't have it in Minnesota, so it's just a matter of not instituting it, but nationally, maybe this could be a GOTV issue.

Emmer keeps digging himself in deeper on this. The funny thing is, he canāt seem to help himself. Either that, or his campaign sees how toxic this episode is and they canāt let it go lest Democrats take control of the framing of it.
It doesnāt help matters that weāre now on our third or fourth explanation/theory of what Emmer really meant. Taking Emmerās original statement at face value, one would assume he was advocating cutting tipped employeesā base wage to $2.13/hour. Thatās what everybody, except for maybe Emmer, understands the tip credit proposal to be. Then he said the tipped credit would only apply to new hires. Then he said tips should be tax free. Now weāre onto some rationale that the minimum wage actually results in lower wages which, apparently, some people arenāt entitled to anyway because he thinks they should start at less than $7.25/hr and āwork their way up.ā

Close call for Stuck On Stupid Award betwee Emmer and the Athletic Director (or coach) from a GA college (posted here about 2 weeks ago) who got a DWI. His "lady friend" who was in the car got arrested too for being drunk. BTW, her red panties were in the coaches lap when he was pulled over. Forgot to mention he is married and was about to sign, that afternoon, a new contract with the college, giving him a raise from $100,000 to $500,000 annually. No joke. Yes, that's what I was saying Clarance = you need
MORE out of life (we all do)
THAN to come across as one who is spiteful, name
calling or sarcastic to anyone else ...
I'm a big believer
in KARMA (as it always comes back to us ...
either to bless or to BITE the posterior, depending
on what we deserve). That "nurse" by the way was
not a nurse ... and had slunk (like a skunk) away
after having had the truth put on a NEON sign for
all to see ~ definitely not an important subject
however, not in any way or to any degree.
SINCE we have never met nor been to the home
of one another = I'll NOT assume that I have
first hand knowledge of your life or what your
relationships are with those around you ... I
can't, don't and so refuse to make comments
which sound as though I think I've a crystal
ball or candid camera installed!
The same applies to yourself ... not knowing
a single THING about my life, my level of
education, what I've achieved professionally,
personality traits or any other factor ~
opinions are of course quite common and usually
reflect the "slant" one has on life, rather
than accurately 'defining' another person;
I DON'T write well wishes (to anyone) unless I
really hope someone else will grow and prosper.
Again, you don't know ME / I don't know you (and
being that person = disinclined to base a FINAL
verdict on what "people say" ~ I make up MY OWN
mind ... probably got this way due to hearing so
much B.S. over the years from patients :
I grew a falsehood detector, the size of a
satellite dish :)
HAVE a nice trip Clarance, and do some deep thinking
... we all benefit from mental cleansing (likely why
some really 'high pressure' execs retire to a monastery
on occasion = or take up chanting / other forms of the
Buddhist philosophy). Bon voyage, I.V.

Thank you Clarance, for the best LAUGH I've had

to think about. Writing all that silly garbage
really does nothing to HEAL yourself ... and it
seems you know more than the average 'layman'
about PILLS (Thorazine / Lithium is an excellent
guess).
IT never ceases to amaze me, how some people cannot
either leave well enough alone or take KINDNESS
from someone else in the spirit it is intended.
AS many people agree, I've done ALL any human
could do, to try and get through to the kind spirit
I supposed was to be found somewhere deep inside of
you.
That was not intended in a "bluebirds, rainbows
and the peace sign" kind of way.
I realize the 1960s was your era, but judging others' philosophies according to that time in history shows muddled thinking.
Funny that you keep talking about a person who
clearly has not followed you or gives a damn
about your well being, thought or opinions. I
know about the fake nurse (who is a HE) due to
further conversations and investigation. Abusive
people of a feather may flock together ... however
your habit of "turning mean and violent" on someone
that you previously had kinder and gentle exchanges
with tells me a LOT (about not only medications but
brain wave patterns).
Any other mean spirited notes by yourself would be
passed on to appropriate channels. You need not
worry about any further efforts by myself to keep
the peace. My eyes are open, and will remain that
way. It is difficult to believe (that you've had
numerous other pseudonyms on here) as that must
violate TPM rules. In fact, I've a very excellent
attorney friend who has researched libel /slander
laws and has assured that such happening on the NET

And consider this: A server making $100,000 in tips, assuming consistently generous customers tipping in the 20% range, is selling and serving $500,000 worth of product for the restaurant owner; at minimum wage, the server's labor costs the restaurant owner 3% of this amount ($15,000). I don't pretend to understand the economics of hospitality in detail, but it seems to me that if the restaurant owner of this example is having problems then those problems are not going to be solved by cutting the wages of an extraordinarily productive employee.

Jeez, he says that he never said that he wants to reduce the minimum wage, and then he basically says, "But yeah, I absolutely do want to decrease the minimum wage." What a douche-nozzle.

"Look, I don't know--I don't know what all this fuss is about. These are waiters. Servers. Servants. In better times, more patriotic times, the times of our forefathers, servants weren't paid a damn thing. They were allowed to live. And they were grateful for it. They were happy that they were graced with the opportunity to spend their entire lives in the service of their betters. And you know what? Budgets were balanced back then."

He better learn how to cook at home because I am pretty sure he is going to get served far worse than pennies when he eats out.
Most people learn before they turn 20 to not piss off the wait staff, unless of course you like pubic hair a goobers in your food.

Thank you Clarance, for the best LAUGH I've had
all week. You had suggested you were going away
and MY intent was simply to give you something
to think about.
I supposed was to be found somewhere deep inside of
you. That was not ntended in a "bluebirds, rainbows
and the peace
sign' kind of way. I realize the 1960s were your
era, but judging others' philosophies according
to that time in history shows muddled thinking.
In fact, I've a very excellent
attorney friend who has researched libel /slander
laws and has assured that such happening on the NET
can be sued for, just as other defamations can be.
Adieu and adios Clarance ... it becomes clear that
return KARMA has already found you ~ quite sad but
predictable.
