Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich appeared last night on Greta Van Susteren's show, elaborating on his opposition to the building of a Muslim community center near Ground Zero in New York City. During his appearance, Gingrich ended up making it clear that he doesn't oppose mosques in all of New York -- just in this particular spot.

"You know, there are over a hundred mosques in New York City. I favor religious freedom," said Gingrich. "I'm quite happy if they'd come in and said, 'We want to build a community center near Central Park, we'd like to build a community center near Columbia University.' But they didn't. They said right at the edge of a place where, let's be clear, thousands of Americans were killed in an attack by radical Islamists."

Gingrich wrote last week, opposing the center: "There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia. The time for double standards that allow Islamists to behave aggressively toward us while they demand our weakness and submission is over."

His latest remarks here do show some flexibility, however, and some clarification into the matter of what Matt Yglesias has called the "mosque exclusion zone."

"There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia."

Ah, I see, forget freedom of religion! Let's go full religious aristocracy on American society!

It is the fact that there can be a Mosque near Ground Zero that represents perfectly and truly our unique freedom.

what an asshat.

Yes, by all means, Newt, let's judge ourselves to the despicable standards of others. While you're at it, stop talking about being "proud to be an American," since you don't think we have anything to be proud of.

Conservatives love to mythologize places and people. (St. Ronnie) The WTC becomes Ground Zero, a holy place. This is all a part of their world view. They are waging a religious war on the rest of the world. The Christian and Jewish and Islamic fundamentalists are pushing us all toward a global conflagration.

So when can we expect Newt to buy a building for these folks in a place he deems "appropriate"? Because unless he's planning on donating the real estate, he needs to STFU about who can build what on land they own.

Indeed. He's relegated them to what I would imagine would be some of the most expensive real estate in a city that is expensive anyway. And at the other end of Manhattan island!! As I recall, one purpose of this community center was to serve the Muslim community in lower Manhattan. It would hardly make sense to put it as far away from lower Manhattan as you could get. I would guess that it's easily a 30-minute subway ride to get from the financial district to Columbia University.

Bottom line: it's not up to Newtie to say where the community center goes. It's up to the people building the center, and the people who live in the neighborhood. Newtie doesn't qualify on either count.

Please butt the fuck out. Nobody asked you what you think, and nobody who actually lives in Manhattan cares what you think. You're from Georgia. If you want to have a voice in this, move to Manhattan.

Yeah, but he shows up at the Fox building on Park Avenue all the time, so he's sorta like kinda almost a real New Yorker. The further people live from NYC, the more important their opinion, donchaknow? I mean, actual New Yorkers, they're not Real Americans anyway, and they definitely shouldn't be trusted to determine who should be able to rent a building across the street from
Ground Zero (where so many New Yorkers died...).

WTF? Flexibility toward what -- dictating where Cordoba builds? The land that Cordoba owns happens to be near the WTC, not near Gingrich's walk-it-back "preferred sites." Why do so many people seem to be missing this point?

Thing is, NY is not the only place there is outcry with mosques being built. As was outlined by TPM here:

"from New York to Tennessee to California, the right-wing fear machine is spinning up to take on the construction of mosques and Muslim community centers."
This has little to do with WHERE these mosques are being built and more with WHO are building them. The whole 911! Ground Zero! SACRED GROUND! thing is just smokescreen and mirrors and I wish the media would call them on it. In fact, I wish Greta would have asked him about Tennessee and if he agreed with Republican Lou Ann Zelenik's vocal opposition. It would be fun to see him bullshit his way out of that.

I'm tired of these Republican douchebags thinking they have the slightest fucking basis for opining where anything goes, or what happens whatsoever, within New York City. Shut the fuck up, Sarah and Newt. I don't give a flying fucking rat's ass where you think things should or shouldn't go, or what should or shouldn't happen, inside my city. Fuck off and stay away. The low likelihood that I'll ever have to encounter neanderthal fuckwads like you is a key reason why I live on the upper west side of Manhattan and you live in...America. Shut up and stay away and everything will work out fine. I personally don't give a shit if they open a goddam santeria shrine right next to a satanic coven right next to a brothel across the street from the WTC site, and most other New Yorkers don't, either. If you can't live and let live in this town, you're pretty much screwed.

I had to laugh; at the time of the Revolution, the area around St. Paul's chapel was the brothel district, referred to as "Holy Ground" by the soldiers of the Continental Army who were encamped nearby in 1776. To hear the neocons referring to it once again as holy ground is more than a little ironic.

It's Fear-mongering at it's finest. And really, I am tired of people saying how much it hurts the heartland. It's really a croc-o-shit. It was a tragedy that we lost human life, but this is the heart of a major city. The only people dictating what should go there is the city council, which has no issues with this building, and maybe the people of the state of New York.

All the other dumbasses need to get over themselves. They aren't that important and the world is still turning, not all muslims are extremist, just as not all christians are.

The fact that we keep hearing the dribble that they need to renounce the violence of others doesn't really play well either. All this is doing is questioning their citizenship and loyalty to the country which is even more disgusting coming from this group of un-american, self-righteous assholes.

According to the fascists, er, the Republicans, the WTC site and an unspecified amount of real estate surrounding it are the property of the fascists, er, real Americans! And only those fascists, er, heartland dwellers, get to decide what is built there, and by whom.

And anything that honors the murderers that murdered there, er, Islam, is right out of the question!

Imagine how offended Newt would be if someone objected to the building of a Roman Catholic Church (my church, BTW) near a school? All the Fox Newsers would immediately rediscover the First Amendment.

I'm curious how he feels about Greta's membership in Scientology? Would he allow a Scientology center to open near Ground Zero? - they're really good with ridding you of thetans. Or would Scientology, which has been around since, what, the 50s be considered a cult? How does Newt feel about Mormons? What about the B'hai faith?

So that's what happened to Greta VanS. I thought it was just the move from CNN to Fox that had zombified her. Either that, or the surgeon who did her face lift removed part of her brain at the same time. Scientology explains it, though.

Don't ask Newt or Sarah. Their insight about Manhattan geography is probably limited to the distance between the Times Square hotels they've stayed in and the theaters they walked to for a performance of "CATS" or maybe "Phantom". Oh, and the side trip Sarah took to that "Evolution Museum".

1. It is not a Mosque that is being built at/near the old Twin Towers site . . . It is a Community/cultural center focused on peaceful co-existence between all religions and designed to foster peace and understanding between people of all religions that happens to be being paid for by people of the Muslim faith.

2. The 09/11 Memorial is not a war memorial; it is the site of a horrific crime against all people that has been memorialized. To condemn the attempt of people to heal the wound inflicted is a disservice to people everywhere.

3. As a percentage of fatalities and injuries, more innocent U.S. Citizens of Muslim faith died and were injured in the 09/11 attacks than their percentage in the general population. The attacks were, also, a crime against peace-loving Muslims everywhere AND more especially here in the United States of America where we all enjoy freedom of religion. Their pain is no less real than that felt by the population-at-large and they have rights to the same freedoms earned through the expense of their blood as the rest of us.

4. The Torah teaches my tribe that we are to respect folk of all traditions because my people were once strangers in the land of Egypt . . . Unkind acts inspired by or inflicted because of xenophobia is not a Divine Commandment in any of the religions inspired by Abraham’s understanding of divine. This includes intentionally inflicted suicidal acts of mass murder AND protests inspired by the willfully imperfect understanding of the facts and other folk of differing traditions and backgrounds.
