Well, it's official. Progressive Democrats want President Obama to face off against former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in 2012 as the battle for the ages.

An early release of the Netroots Nation straw poll taken from Thursday through Sunday and obtained by TPM shows that attendees of the convention in Las Vegas overwhelmingly want Palin to mount a presidential bid.

Respondents were asked who would they "most like to see" as the GOP nominee to challenge Obama for reelection two years from now. Netroots attendees preferred Sarah Palin, with 48 percent of them choosing her. The next closest vote-getter was libertarian Rep. Ron Paul with 11 percent, followed by former Sen. Rick Santorum with 10 percent and former Gov. Mitt Romney with 9 percent.

The others trailed in this order: Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (8 percent), Gov. Tim Pawlenty (7 percent), Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (5 percent) and Rep. Mike Pence (1 percent).

It's obvious why progressive activists would want Palin to run against Obama, and certainly no reflection of the sentiment of Republican primary voters with two years before they make up their minds. Democrats view Palin as a flashpoint who is easy to campaign against (and who is a great help for Democratic fundraising).

A fascinating result within the poll is what the frustrated netroots want Obama to focus on next. They overwhelmingly (74 percent) answered "improve jobs situation" when asked what should be the "highest priority" for Obama and Congress. Far runners up were "finish Afghanistan" with 8 percent, immigration reform with 7 percent, repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell with 6 percent, drawing down troops from Iraq with 3 percent and reduce deficit with 3 percent. (See Obama's surprise message to the convention here.)

The group also -- by 69 percent -- said health care reform was Obama's "top accomplishment." That was followed by his economic recovery plan with 13 percent, improving the U.S. image abroad with 7 percent, extending unemployment benefits with 5 percent, Wall Street reform with 3 percent, moving toward the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell with 2 percent and a new Afghanistan strategy with 1 percent.

The majority of respondents think Obama is handling his job as commander-in-chief well, with 32 percent saying they "strongly approve" and 51 percent saying they "somewhat approve." On the disapproval side, 13 percent disapprove somewhat, and 4 percent strongly disapprove.

The netroots also voted on their top priority for this fall's ballot. It was a close call, but 31 percent chose Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid vs. Sharron Angle in Nevada. Next up with 25 percent was the Pennsylvania Senate race between Rep. Joe Sestak (D) and former Rep. Pat Toomey (R), followed by the 21 percent who picked the Kentucky face-off between Rand Paul (R) and Jack Conway (D). Two House races rounded out the list: Rep. Michele Bachmann (R) versus Tarryl Clark (D) in Minnesota's 6th Congressional district, which 15 percent called their top priority, while 7 percent picked Virginia's 5th Congressional district, where Rep. Tom Perriello (D) faces a challenge from state Sen. Robert Hurt (R).

Of the respondents, 40 percent said they had the same level of enthusiasm about the elections now as they did in 2006 when the Democrats captured control of Congress. Twenty-seven percent said they were more enthusiastic and 33 percent said they were less enthusiastic.

don't misunderestimate their ability to watch national debates and realize that Palin/Bahcmann have no idea what they hell they are doing and would be disastrously incapable of running/leading the country...

then again...when Obama gives clear and concise, substantive answers, and Palin just spouts some slogans...a lot of stupid people will respond more to the sloganeering...

which is why rebutting is an important part of debate

It is clear that you don't keep up the mess ups that your own party is constantly making....like Shelia Jackson Lee, the Yale congresswoman thinks we have a north and south Vietnam..she thinks Neil Armstrong went to Mars...Obama has does not even know who many states we have or were the car was invented or what our Navy men are called...that is just a few...and I want even mention Pelosi or Biden....so you need to just stop your nasty liberal demonizing ...but I guess that is a requirement to be a Democrat.

"or were the car was invented"

It's best not to make a dumbass spelling mistake in an attack on others for ignorance.

On top of that, the car wasn't invented anywhere. It was developed in several European countries, England, and the United States. You could say that it was in the United States that the passenger automobile was first successfully mass-produced and mass-marketed. You couldn't say that any one citizen of the US, or any other country, "invented the car."

Spelling errors can be written off as slips, I suppose. But asking where the car was "invented," as if that were a meaningful question, shows that you're a dim bulb indeed.

I think this deserves some thought: if we have to depend on Republicans making fools of themselves, doesn't that make us more and more lazy, content to let voters vote "against Repubs" instead of "for us"? What happens then, when Republicans eventually nominate someone who isn't completely unelectable? Instead of having a clear agenda, we're too busy annotating confusing regulatory structures and writing great Palin jokes to actually give people something to vote FOR? This is just my frustration, I guess. :)

I understand their reasons, because they believe Palin is a narcissistic, incompetent politician, and that she would be an ineffective opponent, assuring an Obama reelection.

But they should be careful what they wish for. Surprises can happen during a campaign. Obama's campaign could implode and fumble the election. Then we'd have to bow down to President Sarah. Chilling thought.

For that matter, predicting that Barack Obama will be a "one-term President" is equally stupid, if not bonkers.

I will grant you it is how chromosome-damaged Fox-suckers manage to get up in the morning, but it doesn't make it true, just because they "feel it's true". Two years ahead of the game, you have a Presdient whose likability is supposedly in a statistic tie with dislikability (after a scorched-Earth campaign of birtherism, teabagging and bones in his nose). And no Republican candidate looms big at this date. And he's an incumbent.

So unless Jesus himself hears their prayers, and comes back to Earth and Congress passes a law to allow aliens to be President, I really have to spit whenever I hear this dogma casually tossed-out as a done deal. Really dumb. But accepted, as Conventional Wisdom.

"The great empire each year shall have more strife, One above all others will the power obtain: But short will be his reign and life, Two years on stormy seas will he be able to sustain." – Nostradamus

Well if Nostradamus does not ‘Ring your Bell’, then take heed and listen to the words of the ‘Anointed One’ himself’

"I'd rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president," he told ABC's "World News" anchor Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview on Jan. 25, 2010.

Can you name a modern day president that sold himself so short that he would give credit to leaving office in one term just after two years in office?

What exactly are you trying to say?

Obama is perceived as being much too radical of a President, 55% of Americans know he’s a Socialist and consider his policies are moving country in the wrong direction. Hillary has been standing in the political alleyway being a ‘Good Soldier’ and just buying time until she feels the moment is right to step down from her Secretary of State position (because of health reasons) and when the Democratic Leadership in both Houses of Congress have stopped supporting Obama’s legislation in Congress you will see Hillary make a move to run for the President. Hillary will be perceived as the much more conservative choice than Obama which is nonsense.

Their Senate voting records while they were serving together in the Senate were almost identical when voting on the issues, in fact Hillary voted with Obama 90% of the time between 2005 and 2006 before both started running for President and Obama was considered the most ‘Liberal’ Senator in the Senate.

The seditious progressives in the Democratic Party will sell Hillary has being more rational and conservative than Barack, but both are progressives that want to introduce more socialism into our republican form of government without going thru the ART V Amendment process.

Don’t be fooled Hillary is just as as Obama and both want to undermine our Republic and Constitution with more socialism.

I Hate Democracy

Restore the Republic and the Constitution to its rightful place in Government

CHEERS...

GOOD NIGHT NOW!

p.s. Due to the volume of lying, emotional and hateful remarks by progressives directed at me, I will no longer reply to any post filled with personal attacks, vulgar language or obscenities.

Keep in mind that at this point in his first term, Ronald Reagan faced worse unemployment and worse approval ratings than Obama does today. Yet Reagan won reelection in 1984 in a landslide.

It really is the stupid economy. If the job market recovers by 2012, Obama will run again and he will win. If jobs don't come back, Obama will face a much tougher reelection.

Palin as the Republican nominee would definitely be the best thing that could happen ... for the Democrats. But in the spirit of competition, here is some advice for the Whining Wannabe from Wasilla that could make her a more viable, less sophomoric candidate.

Ten things that Palin must do to be elected President in 2012:

1) Read a dozen good books on U.S. history and international relations, because she is clearly out of her depth in these areas.

2) Stop using Twitter until she knows of what she tweets. (Likewise for her Facebook drivel)

3) Cast off her trademark smug, smarmy, self-righteous demeanor. (No, Sarah, some parts of the country are NOT more pro-America than are other parts.)

4) Drop the faux folksy drawl and the contrived winking during speeches. (You betcha she's gonna keep doin' it, doggone it.) And by the way, crib notes on the palm of your hand is so 4th grade.

5) Show more concern about her children's schooling and the value of a good education.

6) Stop evading the question during debates, lest viewers think she is evading the question during debates.

7) Stop blaming others for her own failures and shortcomings.

8) Learn that true leaders do not write books and hold press conferences in order to share their self-righteous, petty vindictiveness with the world. Her speeches consistently are long on snark, short on substance.

9) Quit quitting. Whether it be her governorship or her commitments to appear at a (pro bono) speaking engagement, she has a reputation for bailing on her responsibilities when the going gets tough.

10) Get even closer to God, cause it's gonna take divine intervention for her to be elected to POTUS

Wow, talk about flaunting ignorance. You do it well.

You do know that Obama was specifically referring to all the primaries when he mentioned more than 50 states, don't you? He included Puerto Rico, Guam, etc. And no it was not "57". Nice try making things up. You failed.

Here is a clue: Shrub destroyed the budget, failed to protect the country even when warned in advance, and was anti-science. People like you need to learn history, not revise it. The country is far, far better now than it was 18 months ago. Stock market is up over 20 percent, decisions are being made based on science, and the recession is technically over by objective measures. And the stimulus plan has worked, health care reformed passed as did financial reform.

In short, when you post, get a clue and stop worshiping ignorance.

You're wrong on the states thing. I've seen the tape, and he definitely had a verbal slip and said the campaign had visited 57 states. They had visited 47, so pretty much everybody with a brain can tell it's a simple slip of the tongue.

Palin supporters (the only people anywhere who ever bring this nonsense up) can't understand why this doesn't get the same amount of play as all the stupid things their candidate says. But really the answer is simple: Obama has consistently displayed intelligence and knowledge of policy and politics, so when he has a gaffe, it's obvious that's just what it is. The guy's a constitutional law professor; it's downright hilarious to suggest he doesn't know how many states there are. Palin relentlessly displays unadulterated ignorance of every aspect of politics, so when she says something stupid there's no telling whether she meant something different or simply has no idea what she's talking about.

Or, put a different way, if Palin had worked in a foreign policy think tank and had published a bunch of highbrow papers on national security and diplomacy with Russia, people would find it a lot harder to deride her for mentioning the fact that you can see Russia from Alaska. But when she says that precisely because she has absolutely no experience with or understanding of foreign policy, it's quite damaging.

dswx............sorry, but Obama really did not know how many states we have .....nor where the car was invented...and he "does not" know our history.

He can't balance a budget and that is why we will have "NO" budget for 2011

If the "stimulus" had worked..........we would not still be giving our "unemployment checks" and will be for some time...this is saying........."we do not expect to have jobs for a long time"

You need to start keeping up with what is going on in the US rather that spending your time "demonizing" people.

We can start with his failures in employment (employment growth didn't keep pace wwith population growth during the Bush administration, let alone replace any of the jobs lost during the 2002-2003 recession), the economy (at least $5 trillion of the deficit is *directly* Bush's fault, excluding the Clinton surpluses he peed away) and the war in Iraq (we weren't attacked in Iraq, there were already UN weapons inspectors in there when Bush issued his ultimatum about allowing them in and there weren't any pre-Desert Storm WMDs in the country anyway).

So let's bat those around for a while, and then we can move on to some more of his failures.

You do realize that all statistics in the last quarter of 2008 were released, exactly before the Lehman Brothers fallout tanked the economy and caused widespread unemployment?

Where I come from, that's called "left holding the bag". John and Sarah could have been elected (no, actually, they couldn't have, but we'll fantasize for the sake of argument), and they'd be holding the same bag, right about now. Dodged one there, didn't ya?

signalman, you're all talking points; you write like a GOP talking head on cable news speaks (those are the assholes who, if you stop them in the middle, get all flustered and go: "LETMEFINISHLETMEFINISHLETMEFINISH!!!" :-)

Yes, I do; in fact I'm acutely aware of when and how those numbers came out. What's your point?

"Where I come from, that's called "left holding the bag". John and Sarah could have been elected (no, actually, they couldn't have, but we'll fantasize for the sake of argument), and they'd be holding the same bag, right about now. Dodged one there, didn't ya?"

What, exactly, did I dodge? Are you trying to say that I supported those two? If so, then I think you have me confused with another poster. Either that, or you've misread my post and you owe me an apology.

"signalman, you're all talking points; you write like a GOP talking head on cable news speaks"

Well, that's your opinion and you're certainly welcome to it. My opinion is that either you've misread me or that you have me confused with another poster.

Is that anything like the assholes who try to claim that someone supported the GOP in the last election when said person didn't actually do so?

"blaming Bush..."

"get over it"

You get over it, fool.

"no one is interested in those lies anymore."

Everything I said is the complete and unvarnished truth and there's not a thing you can say or do to refute it.

These are all *facts* about George W. Bush's failures:
>>>employment growth during Bush didn't keep pace with population growth, let alone replace any of the jobs lost during the 2002-2003 recession.
>>>at least $5 trillion of the deficit is *directly* Bush's fault
>>>that doesn't include the Clinton surpluses he peed away
>>>we weren't attacked by Iraq
>>>there were already UN weapons inspectors in there when Bush issued his ultimatum about allowing them in
>>>there weren't any pre-Desert Storm WMDs in the country anyway

Suck it, dimwit.

"Bush has been blamed so much"

Actually the "Hopey, Changey Thing" is working fairly well for us, even with the obstructionist pukes in the senate and house.

And no one says you have to be ivy league. But I don't know, maybe completing college, maybe being more multi-cultural.

The whole thing about "Mama Grizzles" makes me wanna puke. The country is not 12, and we don't need cuteness and pointless talking points.

What is needed is substance, and the reason Palin was chosen is because that is what she lacks. The is no substance to her character and every day/week/month she makes that case louder by not having a real political platform. At this point she is part of the Rove strategy to scare whitey.

Part of me feels the same way--Palin is the "best" candidate in that she is the most beatable. I highly doubt she could win the general, but even a 1% chance is too much for me, and in the end I cannot "root" for her to get the nomination. She's just too frightening--end of story.

There's another possible problem with a Palin nomination (and apologies for some minor self-promotion, but I also recently wrote about this issue here). If she is far enough behind Obama in the months before November, there's a non-trivial possibility of a moderate third-party candidate jumping into the race, and if they could get enough money they would have a non-trivial chance of winning the election. Palin has the potential to be absolutely disastrous to the point that the "anti-Obama" voters (and there's a good chance the economy will still suck and that Obama will not be very popular in 2012) essentially demand another option. Hard to say how that would play out exactly, but any moderate third-party candidate would be a clear step-down from Obama, no matter how much I've been disappointed in him.

Third-party candidates VERY RARELY win major elections in this country. You need way too much money. And certainly third-party candidates can't win if they get into the race later on.

Consider that, in 1992, Ross Perot was a multi-billionaire and was running against both a very unpopular incumbent (Bush I) and a major party challenger who was saddled with Gennifer Flowers and other ethical issues (Clinton). Perot got less than 20% of the popular vote nationwide and didn't win any states. All he succeeded in doing was allowing Clinton to win the presidency with less than 44% of the popular vote.

I'm very familiar with the history actually, and understand the impediments to third-party candidates. My argument is that we are going through a time of intense political instability, and there's a possibility of the two-party framework breaking down, which has obviously happened on a number of occasions in American history (usually replaced quite quickly by another two-party framework).

As to Perot in 1992, what's remarkable is that he even got 20%. He was, to say the least, an odd candidate who made a horrible VP choice, and he even dropped out of the race before re-entering it, which did quite a lot of damage, obviously. My assumption here would be that any third-party candidate to run in 2012 would be far more viable than Perot. Money and grassroots organizing would be the big problems, and I'm not saying the odds of such a candidacy (much less its success) are high, I'm just saying there's a chance for it, particularly if Palin is the nominee and is polling poorly.

Most folks seem to assume that the Republican and Democratic duopoly will go on forever, but that's far more unlikely than a third-party run in 2012. Epochal shifts in American politics do happen, and we might (might) be approaching one, though I have no idea what the consequences would be.

Read your Advocate article. Nice job. BTW, my younger son is going back to NYC next month (couldn't find a job here) - to the New School for graduate degree Political Science.

Posted yesterday about possible 3rd party candidate for 2012. Of course ran into shit storm w/o umbrella. But did a little research on Perot (worked for him in CT '92). Was surprised to read:

Perot ('92) peeled off 20,000,000 votes (20%).
86% of those Perot voters were middle and upper middle income voters
Spent 65 mil of own $.
Campaigned in only 16 states.

Not bad considering "look under the hood" as his only TP. He really didn't have much else to offer (except Stockdale)!

If economy continues going sideways, or gets worse, with 10% unemployment and two wars still going on,well, why not a 3rd Party? 'Pubs got no one to run for Pres. That's a joke but Palin would scare enough voters to consider a 3rd Party candidate. Would love it to be Dean. Has perfect message - will fix HC being an M.D. and governed a state that for 18 years has had the closest thing to universal HC! Can take all the credit. Also would APPEAR more in charge/decisive than Obama. And he has really groomed his debate skills. Why not?

There's a tiny chance an asteroid will hit the Earth, kill tens or hundreds of millions outright and trigger a mass extinction event that will take out the rest of the species. The inevitable consequences of that low-probability event are so horrendous that no one in his or her right mind would ever, ever endorse or approve of anything that would increase those odds, however incrementally.

There's a similar chance that Sarah Palin could become president with, at least metaphorically and possibly literally, similar consequences for the nation and the world. Why in God's name would anyone consider the possibility of an event, like winning the Republican nomination, that makes that catastrophe more likely with anything other than horror is beyond me.

Aside from the asteroid strike scenario, however, my real concern about Palin is that she's so horrible, so recklessly dangerous, so utterly terrifying in her proud ignorance and metastatic malignant stupidity, that whoever beats her for the GOP nomination will seem much better by comparison. I'm afraid that people will fail to grasp how truly stupid and dangerous whoever the eventual nominee is on his or her own terms out of sheer relief at having dodged the Palin bullet.

The alternate reality that has become kosher since the latest rise of the GOP is exactly: [a] how the people could allow that to happen, and; [b] how, if it does, the resulting terminal damage to the Republic will be blamed on "eight years of Obama!"*, and the MSM will treat that as a valid "side of the debate".

* = Which I maintain there will be, despite the RW article of faith that the President is "DONE!".

You know... I bet if you surveyed Republican voters and asked them if, in their opinion, that meant Obama was "DONE!" in November of this year, they'd respond Yes.

I honestly think they don't think any further than the bumper sticker, and have no idea that this is not a presidential election year. All they know is what they've heard from their trusted sources, and that's what they believe: there's an election in November; he's "DONE!", and therefore it stands to reason that..!!!

The only thing that is certain is that the Republicans will field a presidential candidate. It may or may not be Palin but so what? Is there a single potential Republican on the scene who could conceivably tap into the pool of independents who supported Obama let alone any Democrats?

Let's run down the list, shall we?

Huckabee, Pawlenty, Romney, Gingrich, Pence... Talk about your Usual Suspects! They collectively make John McCain positively statesman like.

No, I would submit that barring further economic deterioration or an unforeseen international debacle, the Republicans are destined to languish in the wilderness until at least 2016. Let us pray that in the meantime they develop something that approximates a coherent message of governance with some substnace and a strategy that doesn't rely solely on pointing at Obama and snarking "that one."

Don't encourage her, or let her near the race. Many thought George Bush to be a buffoon and not up to the race for president, other than his access to big money, and look how that turned out. Palin has to be washed out of the race, even before the primaries get under way. Given the irrational way many voters have been behaving, this is not a risk we should allow to get underway.

President Obama (who I admire) and the Netrooters do no have the political courage to move the country forward. In 1993 President Clinton raised taxes in the face of huge structural deficits, a VERY unpopular move that ultimately cost the Dems the majorities in Congress. But it was clearly the right thing regardless of political calculus. It put the nation on the path to fiscal stability and huge budget surplusses. As we all know, Bush and the republicans wrecked that.

Presdent Obama and the weak-kneed Netrooters have no such courage. The Netrooters focus instead on wrangling over their favorite narrow policy objectives, desperate for a "win" against the republicans and generaly agnostic about the general welfare of the nation. Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos has been particularly guilty of this.

And now the Netrooters carp and wail because their selfish goals have not been achieved quickly enough. No wonder President Obama has been reticent to move forward aggressively: The leftys don't have his back.

If the republicans take over the majority in either house of Congress this November it will be largely the fault of the Netrooters who showed their political immaturity by festering into interest group parochialism rather than consistently supporting a comprehensive political strategy to bring about meaningful change to all Americans.

I mean seriously look at her and that accent is way too folksey to be real. It sounds like something a comedic actor would think up as over the top. she has trouble spelling and answering qeustions in english but I bet if she spoke russian it would be totally fluent.

Oh, you believe in "God"?? really? and you think He will listen to your prayer? or was it a prayer?

Do yourself a favor and go meet some of those people that you are calling names. I think that would make God happy. He may even listen to your paryer, well, you would need to confess your sins...then He would listen. Go ahead, I bet you would feel so good getting all that hatred our of your heart.

This would be so amazing.

Now to dispel some comments that middle america would botch this... well. I think you underestimate Palin's pure... well. Ability to botch things... You bring her out of the woodworks, make her campaign... she'd implode so quickly, expose the republican agenda as the sham it is...

If this was to happen it'd be Nixon vs McGovern... only less CREEP. And would that be beautiful? Yeah.
