Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) went on an apoplectic rant on the House floor last night, and apparently he hasn't cooled off much since then.
Earlier this morning, Weiner and Rep. Peter King (R-NY) shouted and finger-pointed their way through a Fox News interview over a bill that would provide health care to rescue workers effected by the dust from the World Trade Center, which failed in the House last night.
King accused the Democrats of orchestrating a "cruel hoax" with the bill, while Weiner called it "outrageous" that Republicans would vote against it.
Weiner was furious last night that most of the "cowardly" Republicans voted against the bill and then blamed it on "procedure." Exclaimed Weiner: "You vote yes if you believe yes! You vote in favor of something if you believe it's the right thing! If you believe it's the wrong thing, you vote no!"
On America's Newsroom today, King, who is the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Homeland Security, said that "the bottom line is the Democrats control the House, and they pulled a procedural gimmick starting ten days ago, and they lost the nerve to bring it to the floor on a real vote."
He also called the whole situation a "cruel hoax," and accused the Democrats of "moral cowardice."
"They control the House," said King. "They could have passed this."
Weiner shot back: "You know for all the whining about the process, we had an up-or-down vote. Do you know what percentage of Republicans voted for it? Seven percent." Only twelve Republicans voted in favor of the bill.
"Your rant last night about the process and how bad the process was gave cover for your colleagues," said Weiner adding, "Twelve Peter? That's all you could muster?"
At this point King and Weiner were basically just yelling over each other, with host Bill Hemmer feebly attempting to get a word in edgewise. But amidst the fray, King accused the Democrats of "phony hypocrisy" and trying to score a "cheap political point."
"Here's the point," Weiner fired back. "We support it, your guys don't. That's outrageous to oppose this bill."

I don' think so. The GOP has no incentive to work with Dems, no matter how much they yell or get in their face they don't have to do anything. The base and corporations rewards them every time they vote against the Dem agenda.

This is the kind of thing that will get the voters, or at least the base, to get up and and get involved. They want to see these people that are asking for their votes actually fighting on their behalf, not just trying to work out compromises with opponents who will never give an inch. Weiner's rant doesn't have to change any Republicans' minds if it manages to just get Dems motivated.
I really appreciate someone who knows how to vent. Sam Kinnison was effective. Lewis Black is really good at it, too. Weiner may not have the schtick to match them, but he's very effective just the same. He doesn't just sputter, he knows exactly what he's talking about and phrases it well.
Sometimes things get so incredibly stupid that you can't respond in a quiet manner.

Also, history has shown that constant high levels of anger in their elected officials exhausts the American public and can be a real downer on their favorability ratings long-term. I'm glad Weiner is angry here, but it would be self-defeating to want all Dems to be this angry all the time.
That said, the host is a douche. "This yelling might be why Congress has an 11% approval rating"??? F you, douche. You've got a real disagreement on your hands and all you can do is get all smug that people are not disagreeing as obediently as you'd like -- F you. F you right in the ear.

Well I don't want obama to be a once term president. What I want is more passion and spine for him and the Dem's. They hold power. They should be strutting their stuff, pushing through issues that will help the country. Not back down when a threat of filibuster hit. Make this obstructionist actually filibuster. Don't give a summer recess until you get what you want. Again this country is being held hostage by the minority which is never what was intended.

That didn't work out too well for Carter.
I can see it now, the liberal/progressives get all excited about a candidate that promises "real" change. This exciting new candidate decides to stay in the race out of principal and hopefully move the overton window to the left. Lots and lots of liberal/progressives get behind this exciting new candidate out of principal in order to move the agenda to the left.
Queue the music to "The Presidents March" and the smiling image of the nations first female president.
A couple of years later all of the hard work completed by the previous administration begins to have a real affect, the economy starts humming again and President Palin declares this a justification for small government and less regulation.

I think you're running scared. I can't see where challenging Obama will give the Republicans an open door to the Presidency under almost any circumstance. The 'pubs IMO have absolutely no one to offer, no one with any credibility or charisma. If they did then a Dem primary fight would be really really stupid. If you're right about Palin then we deserve our grand stupidity as a nation. God, what a thought. Makes me pause.
And get back to me when the "economy starts humming again".
This ain't your ordinary recession. Nothing but more bad news on top of more bad news. Wayyy to serious.

vasu's comment has nothing to do with Republicans. They are irrelevant. The point was that if Democrats would respond more regularly with this kind of in-your-face anger and righteous outrage, 1) Republicans would be forced to back down much more often than they have, and 2) Democrats would not appear so weak and ineffective before the voters.

Yes and people like Weiner and Grayson can fire up the base. Dems and their independent allies need to see Dems in Congress fighting the good fight. This motivates the Democratic base. This could fire-up progressive-leaning independents once they become truly apprehensive of a GOP takeover of either chamber of Congress. Go Weiner and Grayson. And Speaker Pelosi: please let them have their say! After all, the Dems have not much to lost by being themselves right now. Esp. if the polls are to be believed!

At this point the Democrats have been so demonized by the Republicans that it is a matter of morality and patriotism for the Republicans to reject anything the Democrats might propose. Why should anyone trust a Fascist-Communist-Racist party?
On the other hand, the Democrats continue to believe that they should attempt to work with these same Republicans and actually take seriously what they say, going so far as to hire and fire based on their opinions.
Both parties are insane -- certifiably insane.

Ericf, you're exactly right. This bill was brought up under what is called "suspension of the rules," where no floor amendments are allowed and the bill needs a 2/3 majority to pass. That is a procedure usually reserved for so-called "non-controversial" bills like commemorating a post office in a small town or declaring that Tuesday is "Bob Hope Was A Great American Day."
There's no way that a medical/spending bill -- regardless of its merits -- would get passed in those circumstances. By definition, it's not "non-controversial." Weiner's theatrics are all well and good, but it boggles the mind that the Democrats would try to push a bil like that through needing a 2/3 vote.

Exactly, what is controversial about providing health care for responders to 9/11 that have suffered health problems from the toxic environment around the WTC? This is a no-brainer!

It's politicized because the words "health care" are attached. This isn't a new issue. Michael Moore brought this issue up in his movie Sicko.
It's a travesty that this occurs.
btw... they did it this way to prevent ammendments being hanged on this bill like a Christmas tree... the GOP used the procedure excuse for political cover not to vote for it.

It's called suspension of the rules. Under a suspension bill, no amendments are allowed and require 2/3rds of the members present to pass.

Every dumb ass in Long Island who voter for Peter King and has a family member who either died or was injured running into the Trade Center should go to Kings office and punch him in the face! While beltway wisdom claims that the Dems will suffer for this, only idiots who can't see what Republicans are doing will see it that way. It's very simple folks. If you want to get anything done GET RID OF AS MANY REPUBLICANS AS YOU CAN! The notion that the minority party doesn't have to do anything is bullshit! They are they to work for the people, not their party. It's like playing chess with someone and they refuse to make a move. Why are you even playing if you're not going to move. Why are Republicans in Washington if they're not going to do anything? It's freeloading. Get rid of them!

Doesn't it seem a little bit that they went with this needing a 2/3 majority route because they knew it wouldn't pass and then Weiner could get furious, whereas if they went with a typical bill it would have passed and then they couldn't have all the outrage? Everyone knows the GOP is going to vote against anything/everything so why would they try to pass something in this way that absolutely needed their support. Seems very staged.

I think you need to read up on procedure and the rules of congress. No doubt Harry Reid has not always one the day with the way he sets up bills for passage but Rep Weiner's point should not be lost. 94 % Dems voted for 9/11 first repsonders health and 7% GOP voted for 9/11 responders. In todays dumbed down media environment shouldn't the simply question be to those 93% GOP and 6% Dem's, "why did you vote against the health-care of 9/11 responders? Why did you vote against funding that would have alleviated much of the US courts load in helping these American with the health problems after helping out their fellow american on 9/11?"

It seems staged? Well who staged it? The Democrats for knowing that the Republicans would be stupid and vote against it? Or the Republicans trying to drag their worthless agenda out a little farther?
The truth is this. There is absolutely now reason that this vote wasn't carried with a total of 90% for and 10% against by both parties. There will always be some knot-heads and out of that 10%, I can guarantee you that 90% of those will be Republicans.

I would say whoever made the decision to make it necessary to have a two thirds majority to pass along with Rep. Weiner. Can someone explain why it was brought forth with this requirement? If there was a true reason for it okay, but without this requirement the Democrats easily pass this without needing 1 GOP vote.
The GOP should have voted for it, everyone should have voted for it, but why bring it up in a way that even has a chance of failing, unless there was another motive?

Weiner alluded to the reason in his rant on the House floor. The bill was brought up under this rule so the Republicans wouldn't get a chance to keep compromising it and watering it down with amendments, only to vote "no" in the end anyway. As Weiner said, they didn't want Republicans doing what they do to every vote in the Senate.
Why that happened with this particular bill and not others, I'm not sure.

I apologize for this, Jillian, but somebody has to do it:
...a bill that would provide health care to rescue workers effected by the dust from the World Trade Center...
For most purposes, the word "effect" is a noun; the verb is "affect."
"...workers affected by the dust from the World Trade Center..."
"...the deleterious effects of the dust from the World Trade Center on the rescue workers..."
"effect" used as a verb means "to bring about," "to create," often used in the phrase "to effect change," meaning "to bring about change," not to have some undefined effect on it (which would be "to affect change").
"affect" as a noun (pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable) is a technical term used in psychology and psychiatry.
Your use of "effect" has workers being created by the dust (echos of Genesis!), and is obviously not what you intended.
See http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/affect.html

The Republican he was yelling at worked on the bill for five years and helped get the 218 votes that would be needed to pas...s it. The Democrats then changed the procedure for voting requiring 290 votes so that the Republicans could not AMEND the bill. SEE...THERE IS FUNDING FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS HEALTH CARE IN THE BILL...and the Republicans would not support that. The Republican got calls from law enforcement and government officials in NYC when they got wind of this bill for 9/11 victims being used as a vehicle to give illegal immigrants health care funding. The Republican exposed what Weiner and the Dems were doing and Weiner went off because of this exposure of their underhandedness! I guess he thought having an fake indignant tantrum would divert attention from the REAL ISSUE.

Absolute GARBAGE! Is that why Rep. King voted for it?!?! He voted for illegal immigrants getting healthcare?? What about the 12 other Republicans who voted for it?? Rep. King didn't mention that in the two interviews he did today. Why is that? He mentioned procedure. That was it.

okay, first of all. turn on yer bullshit detector. this bill doesn't say one fucking word about immigration status or citizenship. this bill has zero (nada) to do with immigration. this canard about providing health care to 'illegal immigrants' is a RED HERRING. (and even IF the bill hadn't been closed to amendments and an amendment had been introduced to preclude the bill from covering 9/11 workers whose immigration status was or is not 'legal' but who nonetheless have developed illnesses as a result of their work at ground zero, THAT would still be nothing more than a red herring.)
second, if you think that withholding health care from 9/11 workers on the basis of immigration status is a good idea, then yes, i too have to wonder why it is you consider yourself a Democrat.
lastly 'citizens only'?? so even legal immigrant non-citizens who worked at ground zero should not get coverage for the illnesses they've developed as a result of their having worked at ground zero?? wow. and you are yourself (according to you) a 'legal immigrant'?
