An upcoming survey of the Florida Senate race by Public Policy Polling (D) finds that if Gov. Charlie Crist were to win -- after he left the Republican Party to run as an independent -- his constituents would want him to caucus with the Democrats. Furthermore, this opinion is even stronger among those who actually plan to vote for him.

PPP's Tom Jensen gives this sneak preview:

One thing we asked on the poll was whether people thought Charlie Crist should caucus with the Democrats or Republicans if he was elected. 43% of respondents said he should go with the Democrats and 37% with the Republicans.

Perhaps more interesting was what those planning to vote for Crist had to say. Within that group 55% said he should caucus with the Democrats to only 22% who expressed the opinion that he should join forces with the Republicans.

The TPM Poll Average, which does not yet include this PPP survey, currently puts Crist ahead with 36.6%, Republican Marco Rubio at 32.6%, and Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek at 14.7%.

The neat thing about being a Senator is that you can do the opposite of what the people who voted for you wanted, and there's basically nothing they can do about it.

this spineless politician is so typical of my baby-boomer generation and no doubt has a long history of 'taking his ball and going home'. of course the problem here is that you libs have been saying he's gay for years [he may be, not that there's anything wrong with that]. given his stand on off shore drilling he probably will get elected as senator, he's a politician and knows how to exploit an issue.BP and their careless oil spill is probably enough to put him through. as a matter of fact i like an independent who is not beholden to either party in the senate. but he still is a spinless twit like so many baby boomers.

Speaking from the Tampa area... most of us aren't hearing a peep from Mr. Meek... but we get a lot of the Rubio v Crist . Most people have no idea who Meek is.

While I vote mainly Dem, I've been known to vote for an Independent here and again. Hate to say it, but Crist will probably get my vote. Not because he deserves it, but because right now, Meek has NO chance of winning and if I have to choose the lesser of two evils... it's Crist... not Rubio in my book (and a lot of my Dem friends too)

It's the same way here in St Augustine. It's like playing "where's Waldo" with Meek. It doesn't look good for him.

I'm an ardent Florida Democrat, but I completely agree with macwenc. Rubio is very bad news. I do hear from Meek and would vote for him in a heartbeat if I thought he had half a chance.

I'm in Pasco and I hear absolutely nothing about Meek but I did get a mailer from Greene. I'm voting Crist. At this point, I am wondering if Meek will drop out.
