Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) is pulling ahead of her potential Republican challengers in the Washington Senate race, according to a new Rasmussen survey. Against former gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi (R), the frontrunner in the GOP primary, Murray leads 49%-47%. She's also ahead of former pro football player (and Sarah Palin favorite) Clint Didier 48%-45%, and businessman Paul Akers 48%-42%.
When Rasmussen surveyed the race two weeks ago, they found Murray downagainst both Rossi and Didier, who both led 48%-45%. Murray had been ahead of Akers 46%-41%.
The "top 2" primary, in which all candidates will appear on the ballot, with the top two vote-getters advancing to the general election, regardless of their party, is August 17.
The TPM Poll Average of the Washington Senate race gives Murray a 46.9%-46.0% edge over Rossi. Against Didier, the TPM Poll Average shows Murray up 46.4%-45.2%, and against Akers, the TPM Poll Average has Murray up 47.3%-42.7%. The margin of error for the latest Rasmussen survey is ±4.0 percentage points.

The narrative would need to change dramatically for Rossi to win. He's lost two statewide races, so is damaged goods. He's also perceived as being rather oily (e.g., some unsavory ties to the real estate industry). Murray may not have the wind to her back, but she also isn't perceived as either corrupt or incompetent. And this is typically a blue state.
One wild card is how the various ballot initiatives will influence turnout. Another wild card is reaction to state-level tax increases passed by Democrats. This is a strange year. My sense, however, is that Murray should do better than most Ds.

I'm done with Rasmussen polls... who takes these guys seriously.
Is it any wonder that they are always 5-8 points off from every other poll out there.
