Sarah Palin Calls On 'Peaceful Muslims' To 'Refudiate' Ground Zero Mosque

Sarah Palin's first Tweet about the Ground Zero mosque

Sarah Palin, never a stranger to controversy, decided to weigh in on the one raging over the plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero -- that is, a mosque and community center two blocks north of where the Twin Towers used to stand. In the midst of it, she managed to insult Muslims, those who aren't but still support the mosque and lay a George W. Bush-level malapropism on the masses. She's a multitasker.

Her Tweet, issued at 1:52 pm ET on Sunday (and pictured to the left) read:

Ground Zero Mosque supporters: doesn't it stab you in the heart, as it does ours throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate

Obviously, her Tweet connotes that Muslims who are not peaceful are the ones who are supporting the mosque -- despite all evidence to the contrary -- but it equally egregiously mashes together the words "refute" and "repudiate" to create out of whole cloth the word "refudiate."

Refute, of course, means "to deny the truth or accuracy of" while repudiate means "to reject with disapproval or condemnation." Presumably, what Palin meant to do was to call upon "peaceful" Muslims" to repudiate the construction of a mosque anywhere near Ground Zero.

So, of course, Palin sought to correct her mistake.

She, in fact, erased the original Tweet and replaced it with the one above, which reads:

Peaceful New Yorkers, pls refute the Ground Zero mosque plan if you believe catastrophic pain caused @ Twin Towers site is too raw, too real.

Palin called upon New Yorkers -- many of whom survived the attack on the Twin Towers and others of whom lost family and friends in the Twin Towers -- to "refute" the plan to build a mosque and community center in the vicinity of the towers because the pain of the attacks remains too painful to other people.

That, of course, didn't stop the controversy, so Palin didn't stop her Tweets. She went back to her initial framing of the controversy: that it's all about heartless Muslims versus the still-pained (Christian) Americans.

An hour after her initial Tweet, she added this.

It reads:

Peace-seeking Muslims pls understand. Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing

Again, she equates "peace-seeking" Muslims with those who would reject the mosque, and blames those who don't for causing unncessary pain and "provocation" to the non-Muslims hurt by the tragedy. She then places the onus for healing from the tragedy on those "peace-seeking Muslims," because it is obviously the place of "peace-seeking Muslims" to offer healing to the non-Muslims hurt by the tragedy.

And, for those who noticed her malapropism more than her offensive statements about Muslims? Well, she's got a Tweet for you, too.

It reads:

"Refudiate," "misunderestimate," "wee-wee'd up." English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!

See, she knows it's not a real word, it's just that she's the modern-day Shakespeare, people.

She is trying so hard to coin "refudiate," in fact, that she's used it in the past. Watch:

Not really, though. Sure, her base won't be negatively affected.

They don't know or hear much of words like repudiate. Sarah doesn't either, and it's not a very good (attempted) use of repudiate anyway.

2/3 of Americans think she is unfit for President, and this won't help with those 2/3.

You know.. I was thinking about that "one heartbeat away" thing. I don't think we ever have to worry about Dick Cheney running for high office ever again. Since his LVAD surgery, he will live out the rest of his life without having a pulse (heartbeat).

So the question we have to ask is if a President doesn't have a heartbeat, is he really the President?

We know Sarah is not an A student. But what frightens me is that a) no one around her knows the difference between refute and repudiate, or b) they are afraid to correct her, or c) they tutor he and she ignores the lessons.

None of these is a reasonable place, for someone who could have been the second most powerful person in the world, to be in.

Considering the disregard people like Palin hold for our nation's urban centers - from NY to Chicago to San Francisco, she can stick her concern trolling up her ass.

The only time hillbilly hatemongers like this idiot care about NY is when they can use it for political purposes, so she's got exactly ZERO right to talk about how 'raw' it is... All meth nation hicks like her do is suckle at our tax teat (all while crying about debt and taxes).

So I ask you one last time 'Ahmedsaid'...How is quitting a job halfway thru a term a quality you admire in a President? How is it that she going to 5 different colleges in 6 years only to fail in journalism ( her language skills are suspect)is more qualified and better than a man who reached the top of his class in an Ivy league school? Only in your world is less education a better thing. I'm sure you'd rather have a heart surgeon who got his degree in some central american country over someone who went to John Hopkins. At what point does her ignorance of all things important become a issue to you? This woman is stupid...case closed. And her supporters must be likewise because how else do you explain it?

I think your heart surgeon analogy is too generous. There are some excellent heart surgeons from Central America. A more apt analogy would be a podiatrist who attended five different medical schools to perform heart surgery. Oh, and the podiatrist abandoned his last set of patients because, in his own words, he could better serve them by finding another job.

As someone who lost close friends in the 9-11 attack (one gay, the other Jewish, both New Yorkers in the classic, best sense of the term), I find this fascist bimbo's garbage about how the "heartland" is soooo upset to be nauseating. These are the same people who hate everything that New York and New Yorkers stand for, and would probably have hated what both my friends stood for. Yet, they've embraced 9-11 as some sort of faux patriotic, nationalist proxy for their own wretched views and symbolized it as somehow standing for their own miserable, medieval bigotries and assorted phobias and "-isms." The only New Yorkers who probably agree with the bigot Palin are those who live on Staten Island, and, frankly, no one in the other burroughs considers them to be real New Yorkers anyways.

Christians have no room to feel superior to Muslims when it comes to murder in the name of religion. All religions have their extremists. It is up to the peace loving members of those religions to encourage understanding and respect, not to tolerate the hateful rhetoric of the extremists and in this case Sarah Palin is closer to the extremists than she is the peacemakers.

The biggest thing most of Caribou Barbie's followers are bummed out about (with respect to NYC and 9/11) is that there was anything left. Most of them would secretly love to see a nuke go off in Times Square - then they get the world war / crusade they've always wanted, *and* get rid of a bunch of "snooty liberals"!

Don't worry - they'll make sure to put a tiny little plaque commemorating everyone who died on the side of the 3000 foot tall "Jeebus with a sword" statue they'll put up in the crater. :)

I suspect there have always been groups of nutjobs making crazy statements. It's just that with today's media and the innertubes, the wackos can consolidate and support each other. The 22-27% hence represents a theoretical maximum for the movement. Everyone knows about them now. There's nobody else to recruit. It's all downhill from here.

Let's face it--and you folks have put it so well that it hardly needs further comment--Sarah Palin is that rare political animal: she is at once an ignoramus, an opportunist, a cynic, a fast-talking charlatan, and a self-deluder. She may truly have convinced herself that she is channeling the populist sentiment; we know she is merely on the lookout for the lowest common denominator of thought. In her tireless quest to unload her brand of political snake oil, she can certainly well display her gift of gab; exasperatingly, the more she speaks, the more opaque her thoughts are, and the harder it is for us to follow her--ultimately she rejects both rational thought and any real examination of her true opinion. The deeper we examine and the more we challenge, the filthier and more vituperative her anti-intellectual rhetoric becomes. She reminds all of us of the 12-year old that tips the chessboard when she loses, then sticks the piece in your eye and calls you names for being smarter than she. Absence of both maturity and humility should be insufferable in a human being, and yet her defiant ignorance and self-conviction of brilliance seem to encourage rather than repel political and personal followers.
What, then, is attractive about her to so many? It is people's hate, pure and simple. She and the rest of her rancid Tea Party have nothing substantive to offer, except an outlet and a legitimation for prejudices and general lashing out. This is nothing short of Groupthink; a valve to sublimate racist fears of the President, fear of personal economic collapse, fear of the "other" at the border clamoring to beat the doors down. What is most frightening is that the future will write about our time in the way we write about mass hypnosis in Weimar Germany or during the McCarthy era, and that despite the recognition of these political perils, we appear powerless to stop it from running its course. Is this melodrama? Sadly I don't think so.

Tea party klan folk and other conservative groups are adamant that there is no mosque erected near Ground Zero, because any symbol suggesting that most Muslims are peaceful, God-loving members of society conflicts with their attempt to portray all of Islam as a violent, malevolent cult bent on destroying all of Western civilization.

These churches must be torn down.

There is an important distinction dealing with exclusivity.

Palin is among those "religious exclusivists" who believe that her particular religion (evangelical Christianity) is to sole path - rather "a" path.

If you want to know at least one thing that Sara Palin has in common with "non-peaceful" Muslims....it is religious exclusivity.

The "heartland" just wants something to fear and complain about. On 9/10/01, most of them hated NYC more than bin Laden and Atta did.

But let's make a deal. No mosque near the WTC site, since it was the location of a mass murder by Muslims, but also no Christian churches near any sites of murders by Christians in the name of their conception of God. That will clear out all of Europe, the Middle East as well as large chunks of the Americas. Does that work for you, Sarah?

Palin and most other right-wingers opposed to this mosque should get their facts straight.

The building will be open to the public and will include a pool, gym, performance art area, and other public amenities. Yes, there will be a prayer room within the building, which I guess technically makes it a mosque. But it's not exclusively for Muslims, it's intended for the entire community around the area.

Let's also not forget that this building will be some 2 blocks from ground zero. If they consider 2 blocks to be "sacred ground", then what about 3 blocks? 4 blocks? I have a feeling this has more to do with Islamophobia than anything else.

As a Muslim (one who has served in the military) these attacks are quite offensive. Innocent Muslims lost their lives on 9/11 as well and Muslims mourned with the rest of the nation about the tragic events of that day.

Indeed. These guys don't realize that 2 blocks in NYC can cover a lot of territory. I'm not a Manhattanite and never have been, but I love the place and visit as often as I can manage. One of the things that I tell people that I like best about Manhattan is that just about anything you want can be found within two blocks of wherever it is that you are. So why shouldn't you be able to find an Islamic community center within two blocks of the WTC site? That's very New York!

(Not to mention that I think there was a mosque or an Islamic center not too far from the Park Place site that is proposed for this community center until very recently, when they lost their lease, so it's not like this is something totally alien to the neighborhood.)

My father passed away in the attacks on September 11, 2001 and I believe that it is ridiculous to deny Muslims the right to build a masque (which this is not - it's a community/spiritual center). In my opinion, our religious intolerance in such situations is the most dangerous thing for our national security. Fundamentalists of all sorts will always exist and if we provide them reasons for disillusionment then we will never create the possibility to live in a peaceful society. Anyone who is opposed to this center must try to understand this.

Why the sudden concern for NYC by Ms. Palin? During the Presidential campaign, we in New York (and other large cities) were not considered by Ms. Palin to be part of the "real America."

In any case, it is not for her, or anyone else outside of New York, to determine what is "too real" or "too raw" for the neighborhood. No one experienced the raw reality like those who lived in that neighborhood at the time; and their elected representatives (the local community board) have overwhelmingly approved the Mosque.

Go back to moose hunting, Sarah.

TEABAGGERS ARE JUST EXTREMISTS OF A DIFFERENT COLOR WITH NO REAL POWER IN MAINSTREAM NATIONAL POLITICS

Keep in mind that "Teabaggers" are making "inroads" against their fellow Republicans. They lost in Pennsylvania's 12th District to a John Murtha Democrat; a seat Republicans once believed to be ripe for the picking as the Republican National Senatorial Campaign Committee had high hopes to win it. After all, the district was the only one in the nation carried by John Kerry in 2004 and John McCain in 2008, President Obama’s approval ratings were twenty points lower here than the national average, and Republican candidate Burns was a favorite of the teabaggers. So, the National Republicans dumped a million dollars into the district. The result? Democrat Critz defeated Republican Burns by a decisive 53 percent to 45 percent margin. Democratic turnout in all four states holding primaries that day (Arkansas, Kentucky, Oregon and Pennsylvania) far exceeded that of the Republicans (so much for the energized, teabagger base and depressed, progressive base).

CAUGHT BETWEEN THE DEVIL/TEABAGGERS AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

In order to gain the political power they've enjoyed for decades, Republican moderates and fiscal conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots, racists, sexists - teabaggers) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate/exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional/vulnerable/uninformed voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.

Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and casting out the demons they empowered and the karmic reality that they don't have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and "advocate" the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.

The survival of today's shrinking Republican Party is so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America's increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.

The idiom "caught between the devil and the deep blue sea" is appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are suffering the consequences of their treachery.

Their irresponsible propping up of George W. Bush cost them their credibility, and the irrationalities of teabaggers, birthers and deathers exacerbated by the reckless/lying exhortations of Palin, Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity are costing them their viability.

Palin actually originated the word "refudiate" last week, when she asked the Obamas to "refudiate" the NAACP. I'm guessing that this will be added to the misbegotten lexicon of English words like "irregardless," and well be stuck with it forever.

I'd like to suggest the word's homonym: "Refeudiate" When the Palins and the Johnstons keep mixing it up on the cover of Us Magazine.

A teabagging relation of mine informed me at our July 4th bbq that she would no longer use one of her favorite phrases, "that doesn't jive with" whatever it is because why should blacks get to put their ghetto talk into her conversations.

Had a lovely time explaining to her within earshot of rest of family how the expression is actually "that doesn't JIBE with something," as in fit together. None of the dreaded blackspeak involved, honey.

I only have to be around her & her brood a few holidays per year, thankyajesus.

Look at the number of comments to this post and ask yourself why people care more about Sarah Palin's bullshit then they do about the truly terrifying, secret and unaccountable security apparatus that 9/11 brought into being, that is costing us trillions of dollars, and that is destroying any notion of privacy, and that is actually making us less safe.

We are truly a nation of retards. The media knows this (TPM included) and just shovels us what we want to read and hear about.

Checking back several hours later: this post is up to 250 comments, and the front page post that TPM briefly had up on the Dana Priest "Top Secret America" story is gone. So you see what the priorities are, both for TPM and its readers.

In case anyone's interested, here's the link to the WAPO article:

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/top-secret-america/articles/

And here's Glenn Greenwald's take:

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/07/19/secrecy/index.html

Remember though, you'll make Snooki cry if you stop reading about Sarah Palin and actually learn about something important.

Sarah Palin is a professional victim who constantly plays off her identity as a member of the noble, right-thinking, True-American tribe. In the first tweet, there are the unstabbed hearts of "Ground Zero Mosque supporters" and there are "ours (stabbed hearts) throughout the heartland." Them and us. Mosque supporters are not in the heartland, but she is. Her heart is stabbed along with all hearts in the heartland. With Sarah, it's always them and us, and they are always belittling and oppressing us. They took our country away from us, and we have to take it back.

"Elites" may laugh at "refudiate" and call her stupid, but she didn't screw up, she coined a new word! Of course she knows what "refute" and "repudiate" mean! She reads all the words! Besides, her tribe knows exactly what she meant, and she will make it very clear to them that when the elites laugh at her, they are laughing at the tribe. They laughed at Ronald Reagan, they laughed at George Bush, they would have laughed at Shakespeare, they laugh at me, and they are laughing at you, because you know I am just like you. I am in the company of great, noble, right-thinking True-Americans (and Shakespeare), and I am one of you. And they are laughing at us, belittling us, oppressing us, and stealing our county!

Sometimes I think she intentionally creates opportunities for people to laugh at her, so she can exploit her victimhood. Sarah Palin is ignorant, but she's not stupid. She has what a friend of mine once called (in reference to someone else) "nasty redneck cunning."

The funniest part was when she attempted to use Bush as a model for validating the use of neologisms in language unknowing that she set herself up for a Gumpian, "Stupid is as Stupid does". And the unwashed are in terminal Lemming mode. All the whining about Obama's poll numbers hardly ever take notice of Republican/Tea Party polling. One would think Independents would score big this next cycle. The masses are going into knee jerk mode and it is really difficult to asses who they trust less. The masses are voting for the less favorable than for their optimum choice unless OFA and its GOTV efforts get a significant number of surge voters to the polls and my experience indicates that these voters are younger and mobile and harder to find but are engaged in the process when relocated. And alot of their parents are sheltering them from OFA as it is their contact numbers that these students used in the last cycle. On campus OFA organizations will be required to be re-energized and get cell numbers instead of parent's phones. But I digress.

Dear TPM,

Years ago, Josh Marshall was a superb investigative journalist who did excellent work dissecting the neoconservative worldview and exposing their plans for world domination. At the time, TPM was a place to read his off-the-cuff thoughts as he pursued valuable threads such as who was behind the Niger yellowcake forgery that played such a critical role in the "dodgy dossier" justifying the invasion of Iraq.

It's a shame to see that now that TPM can afford a stable of a dozen ambitious and talented young reporters, so much time is spent regurgitating the "he said-she said" kerfluffle du jour. I admit that I still come here daily, but merely to be titillated by the reigning snark masters of the progressive blogosphere. It may help to affirm my worldview, but can't say I actually learn anything new from TPM any more.

Those of you in charge of TPM should read Glenn Greenwald's latest article and consider carefully what he says here.

If you read and write about politics full-time and are thus forced to subject yourself to the political media — as I am — what's most striking aren't the outrages and corruptions, but the overwhelming, suffocating, numbing stream of stupidity and triviality that floods the brain. ... Every day, day after day, is consumed by some totally irrelevant though distracting melodrama: what Sarah Palin wrote on her Facebook page, some "outrageous" snippet of a comment made by John Boehner or Harry Reid, some "crazy," attention-attracting statement from some fringe idiot-figure or TV blowhard that is exploited for superficial partisan gain or distraction value (hey, look over there: I think Michelle Bachmann just said something outrageous!!!!).

Does this sound to you like a fair description of how TPM spends its time these days? It does to me. He calls it Seinfeldesque "fights about nothing." An amusing way to spend our time, perhaps, but nevertheless sad.

I read TPM everyday and find much, much mor here than fluff about Palin, Bachmann and the rest of the circus performers. I don't think we should ignore the paper people when they make their outlandish comments, besides, its fun to ridicule the right when they deserve it.

Fair enough. Like I said, I come here every day, myself. But I do miss the in-depth reporting Josh used to do.

I see where you're coming from, but I think the biggest political story right now is the ascendance of people who say crazy shit. Each individual palin/bachmannism isn't newsworthy, but the accumulation of insanity is worth following.

Just don't spend too much time reading comments, or you'll get the idea that everyone reads those articles just for the lulz.

I agree wholeheartedly. I love snark as much as anyone, but I expect more from TPM than just making fun of the latest wingnut headscratcher, or mockery of the conservative outrage du jour.

As Greenwald says, it's all just a distraction from the lack of direction being displayed by our "leaders" in Washington. In the end, it just keeps us amused, while the status quo stays intact, and we continue to drift towards third-world nation status:

That's really the only relevant question: how much longer will Americans sit by passively and watch as a tiny elite become more bloated, more powerful, greedier, more corrupt and more unaccountable -- as the little economic security, privacy and freedom most citizens possess vanish further still? How long can this be sustained, where more and more money is poured into Endless War, a military that almost spends more than the rest of the world combined, where close to 50% of all U.S. tax revenue goes to military and intelligence spending, where the rich-poor gap grows seemingly without end, and the very people who virtually destroyed the world economy wallow in greater rewards than ever, all while the public infrastructure (both figuratively and literally) crumbles and the ruling class is openly collaborating on a bipartisan, public-private basis even to cut Social Security benefits?

Hey, it's all OK, as long as we can laugh at the funny wingnuts, right? Right?

You might have thrown in the fact that the media's dwelling on the trivialities is dangerous, too.

Bad things can sneak into existence to be only briefly mentioned and then lost in the flood of high school hi-jinks.

Most Americans, for instance, have forgotten that our Supreme Court has dictated that corporations are now held to be citizens entitled to the same protection of "free speech" that is afforded to our real, breathing citizens.

And who now remarks upon the fact that, since the SCOTUS simultaneously dictated that money is a form of "speech", the corporations are America's first super-citizens? Non-breathing Americans whose speech is limited only by the billions of dollars that make up their asset base?

And I don't think anybody ever got around to telling John and Jane Q. Public that corporations are not people, in reality, but are tools controlled by a relative handful of individuals who dictate what they will say...

But if they were told even that much, then the fact that those same individuals sit on the boards of other corporations - thereby giving those few the power of trillions of dollars in assets to use in swaying elections - surely didn't stay in the eye - or the mouths - of the press longer than Sarah Palin's latest demonstration of ineptness.

Sarah Palin is an inconsequentiality on the road of American history. But corporations as super-citizens?

That may spell the end of the road altogether...the dead end of a democracy is the concentration of power beyond the reach of its citizens.

Such a flaming ninny this woman is!!! I am weary of the cretins that cannot manage to grasp that lunatics took out the WTC. They just happened to be Muslim lunatics. If we utilize Sarahthink, on the other hand, since Christians have done so much bloodletting across the globe (in direct contradiction to the teachings of Jesus, of course), one might just as well call for nary a church to be built on the planet again.

My God, she's a female rendition of chimpy (2001-2008)

What scares the bejesus out of me is that the people who will vote for her are allowed to drive, vote and procreate.

Frightening! Americans are indeed dumbing down. But that's the way the teabagging/gop want them.

The difference bewteen the stupidity and ignorance of George Bush and Sarah Palin is that Bush was merely unashamed of his stupidity whereas Sarah Palin is very proud to be stupid and ignorant...she refers to her ignorance as "common sense"...a euphemism meaning she doesn't read anything or study anything...

Palin's motto is the Orwellian, "Ignorance is Strength"

it's wrong to conflate Palin's and Bush's penchant for neologisms with their wrongheadedness as politicians. as a defender of descriptive over prescriptive linguistics, i have to argue that neologisms can be a good thing for languages, especially neologisms that work (ie: instantly carry the intended message), which "refudiate" does.

i'll accept your neologisms open-armedly, never misunderestimating their contribution to american english ... but i refudiate your wars, your petroleum dependency, and your oversimplification of international realities.

The message it carries here is she that she is a poorly educated, inarticulate idiot.

I checked out how Fox News would report this , if at all and on the Breitbart show they simply changed her tweet...Instead of what she really tweeted "Pls refudidiate", Fox News rewrote it to read, "Please reject this".

There is a chapel across the street from the Muir building in Oklahoma City, where a good Christian American boy killed 168 American men women and children.

Does that mean we will have to move that chapel to a another location?

Perhaps the amalgamation is more accurate than she will ever realize.

Refudiate: deny truth and accuracy leading to rejection and condemnation of a motion. Refudiate.

Refudiation would suit her purpose quite well. Deny truth. Condemn the mosque.

Isn't inaccurate, extreme condemnation what led to the attacks to begin with? Methinks yes.
