There are no shortage of conservatives in Louisiana who'd like to retire David Vitter. But late this afternoon, one prominent Republican decided to make a go of it, entering the race at the last possible moment to take on the scandal-plagued senator in the GOP primary this August.
Meet Chet Traylor, a former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice well-connected in Louisiana Republican political and business circles circles, who surprised everyone this afternoon by qualifying at the witching hour to challenge Vitter.
Vitter has plenty of money in the bank and, with just weeks to go, time on his side. But Traylor could catch up quickly.
Traylor was elected to the court on the strength of support from the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, which suggests that Vitter might have lost the support of the business community (at least over the course of the next several weeks until the primary).
And, in the meantime, Traylor will make Vitter spend money he had planned to save, and nudge him off his anti-Obama message, or at least distract him from it. Traylor appeared Friday evening with Roy Fletcher, a high-powered GOP consultant whose work helped propel Mike Foster to victory in the 1995 gubernatorial race.
Traylor was the very conservative justice who once wrote in an opinion upholding a Louisiana sodomy law that "any claim that private sexual conduct between consenting adults is constitutionally insulated from state proscription is unsupportable," so you can bet that he'll blast the already conservative Vitter from the right, and draw blood over Vitter's high-profile scandals.
Another fun wrinkle: Traylor's a country lawyer, from rural north eastern Louisiana. By contrast, the Harvard-educated Vitter hails from New Orleans. Not an ideal contrast for Vitter in a Republican primary in a conservative state. Dems in Louisiana and DC are jazzed.
This is one to watch.

I think Traylor will win. The Furer stuff scared the GOP into thinking they could lose the seat, so they called in this guy. This way they get to keep it a party line vote without having to deal with the embarassment of having to support the diaper wearing prostitute frequenting woman hater.

The Furher/women's issue must really have the GOP nervous.

This is only good news for Dems if Vitter wins the primary after spending his campaign chest. Traylor is almost certainly a stronger candidate in the general here, and Melancon is not the greatest candidate ever. Vitter has a fair amount of baggage that can work to the Dems advantage, which is frankly the only way they can hope to flip the seat. Which is why Traylor is challenging in the first place.

Thanks for being the only person from TPM or comment so far to put any meaningful context into this -- much appreciated.

Why does every Vitter photo TPM runs either make him make him look sort of like a pig (literally) or like a pig which just got a whiff of the nastiest fart in his entire life.
Normally I'd say he's just not photogenic, but choosing photos like this takes a special satirical skill.
Great Job TPM.

Have you seen the latest pic of Jan Brewer (the AZ governor)? It looks like it got snapped just when she was starting to say, "F**k!" It is hilarious!
Vitter is just an ugly ugly man. It comes from within and washes all over him. I'll bet he calls his wife, "mommie."

I saw two of his latest interviews and he looked the same way. He has this "I-don't-care" , smug attitude. At one of his press conferences, he was asked a question about Fuhrer and why he kept him on despite his arrest and he treated the female reporter rather derisively. When she tried to ask a follow up question, he kinda ignored her like she did not matter.
He really looked like an arrogant asshole.

I'm hoping that Diaper David bests Traylor in a close, ugly, nasty fight filled with such lurid accusations, ridiculous countercharges, bizarre Tweets, and general asshattery that Melancon squeaks by in November simply because he's not one of them. Not the best way for a Dem to win, but down there, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

I'd say that if Vitter survived the call girls/diaper scandal, he'll probably survive the Furer scandal. Not that there's a dime's bit of difference, but the multiple call girls/diaper is a whole lot sleazier.

Timing is everything. The only reason he has survived the diaper/hooker incident is because it broke at a time when he could just hide out from everyone. Contrast that scandal with the airport bathroom incident that ended Larry Craig's career. Making calls to the DC madam from your office while voting is in session is in undoubtedly a more egregious offense than Craig's airport bathroom arrest, in which it's not even clear that a crime was committed.
But it's all about the timing.

Why is it that judges get into politics after they have ruled from the bench?

Hmmm, not that I wish Vitter well but I'd rather see him than the squeaky clean and scrubbed old face the republicans will pick. If Vitter is the man to beat, he would be a much easier target to hit hard.

How much more to the right do they want this guy to be? Vitter is Jim DeMint's twin brother.

Melancon is a pretty weak candidate. even by Southern Blue Dog standards. No matter how battered Vitter is by the primary, he's still going to be considered the underdog. The best hope for Melancon is a bruised and beaten Vitter just limping past Traylor and State Rep. Ernest Wooten siphoning off just enough votes to spoil the election in Melancon's favour.
Of course, failing that...if Traylor wins, you wouldn't see much policy difference between him and Vitter. Traylor, at least, isn't a proven hypocrite.
