As the unexpectedly contested Florida Republican gubernatorial primary enters its final month, a winner has started to emerge after the millions in negative TV ads plastered across the state by state Attorney General Bill McCollum and wealthy businessman Rick Scott -- and that lucky candidate is Democratic candidate Alex Sink.

Last week, a fresh poll of the governor's race showed that despite being the third wheel in the second-most entertaining Florida political soap opera of the year, Sink has managed to pull ahead of both Republican candidates in general election matchups, thanks to tanking favorability numbers for both Scott and McCollum.

According to local press reports out of Florida, Republicans are starting to get nervous about Scott, the frontrunner for the party's nomination. Scott looks like the guy who'll win Aug. 24, leaving Florida Republicans with perhaps the most damaged Republican candidate for governor since Jim Giibbons. Even if Scott somehow loses to McCollum, his spending (plus McCollum's own problems of course) have Democrats overjoyed with the situation. In fact, things have played out in Sink's favor beyond the Democrats' wildest hopes ever since Scott jumped into the race back in April.

"Not even Aaron Sorkin could have written a script this good," one Washington Democrat told me.

In recent days, focus has shifted away from how McCollum might bounce back and win the GOP nomination to what Republicans will do with Scott as their nominee. Some party leaders have said they're nervous about Scott's lack of ties to the party while others have said that the ugly war between Scott and McCollum is driving them to Sink's camp.

Meanwhile, Sink has quietly been campaigning off on her own and seeing her poll numbers rise. The Democratic source with knowledge of Sink's efforts pointed out that Sink, the state's Chief Financial Officer, has stuck to the campaign trail and stayed above the fray as Scott and McCollum have dragged their own primary race into the mud.

Sink appears to have, so far, beaten back the potential threat from political scion Bud Chiles, the son of a legendary Democratic governor who is running as an independent. Chiles is polling in the low double-digits, but so far hasn't emerged as much of an issue for Sink.

And with a month to go until the GOP primary, there's more good news for Sink: neither Scott nor McCollum show any sign of quieting down anytime soon. McCollum had been struggling against Scott's self-financed juggernaut of a campaign, but he just got a big infusion of cash from the state's public financing system which should help him stay on the air through the end of the primary. Scott, meanwhile, has spent $22.9 million so far and will likely spend more as things roll on.

The final result of the GOP primary may be closer than people think -- McCollum has been around a longtime in Florida politics, and it's unlikely he'll give up on beating Scott before it's all over. But whomever takes home the most Republican votes on Primary Day, if things continue as they are, the real winner on August 24 will probably be Alex Sink.

McCollum looks like a gay pedophile and Scott reminds everyone of those black Nike freaks who rode the roller coaster in Vegas before drinking the poison Kool-Aid.

Sink has a massive war-chest as well. These two guys are beating the snot out of each other on the airwaves, and that is not cheap. Reports on public radio in Tampa yesterday indicated that both had less than $1 million, while Sink has over $3 million. She's fighting with BP, while they are really making each other look like the slime-balls they are.

Races like NV-Sen. CO-Gov. and FL-Gov. underscore one salient point: Democrats, while often feckless and inept, may not lose as much ground as they fear in November thanks to Republicans' infighting, incompetence and stupidity. And while many Dems still need to grow spines, guts and brains, they are still in many instances preferable to the brazen hypocrisy and worthlessness of most Republicans.

Let me see here—Democrats are -–feckless, inept and need to grow spines guts and brains. Republicans are incompetent, and stupid. Are you by any chance an independent or are you trying to improve your vocabulary?

Don't forget FL-Sen. If it weren't for Rubio's insurgent teabagger campaign, Crist would be the sure-win Republican candidate. Now he's the sure-win independent who will caucus with the Democrats.

I'm hoping Dems might be taking the Brown win in Mass. and the House special elections to heart. There's no substitute for connecting directly with voters and out-hustling your opponent.

As a Californian, I'm hoping this will not be lost on AG Jerry Brown or Sen. Boxer. Whitman and Fiorina seem very ill-suited for connecting with average voters and keeping the race local. Don't let the race devolve into a circus, treat independent voters like grown-ups, and turnout, turnout, turnout!

I understand the Brown reference. I'm having trouble understanding the losses in the congressional special elections.
D's have been winning them.

The special elections were won by Democrats campaigning on local issues, while Republicans tried to nationalize the races as referenda on Reid/Pelosi. Didn't work.

I think that's what the comment refers to.

Campaign your ass off on local issues, in other words.

I would never, ever, vote for McCollum as a result of that behavior. Personally, I wish his political career had died at that time, but he's making a come-back as FLA's AG.

Nader, nader, nader! Every time I hear someone say that the Democrats are going to inevitably lose the house, I just think of the constant infighting with the teabaggers. And the fact that so many candidates are new to politics and are saying just the dumbest things imaginable. This is not going to be that bad.

McCollum was a Clinton impeachment manager and a Holier Than Thou. He also has continued to spearhead the use of George Rekers - of RentaBoy.com fame - as an expert witness against allowing gay people to adopt children. Rekers has done irreparable harm to likely thousands of foster children who are left languishing in foster care because that is preferable to gay parents. Asshole.

Scott is a crook.

Florida politics is usually a real garbage hole. This time, the rest of the nation is being shown what slime runs this state.

Now, now - let's be accurate.
Scott is not merely a crook - he is a crook who stole from Medicare and seniors, costing taxpayers billions of dollars.
You thought Enron was trying to stick it to Grandma Millie?
They were a bunch of pikers, not even in Scott's league.

Scott sure made a mess of things in Louisville years ago and then fled the state, or perhaps he was run out. Either way, he's Florida's slime now.

I guess this November will demonstrate, and we will all find out just how influential the primordial reptilian cortex impulse is in the electorate.

If the Reprobates have a strong showing in the win column, everyone ought to get ready for a Mad Max reality of dog-eat-dog, winner take all, unregulated and lawless society.

Floridians know McCollum well and are learning more about Scott than they want. The question is the extent to which Sink's lead will hold after the GOP primary. I'm betting it will be close.

Now that the primary is close, people is starting to pay attention to the candidates. Dems might have a better showing than what was originally thought. The poll numbers will start to move around and that will make it interesting.

A few things. 1.JEB Bush and his political machine left Florida in a mess. They went after taxes with axes and bulldozers and left Florida with no reliable way to finance its NECESSARY operations. That JEB carcinoma is still there with McCollum one of its primary victims. 2.Alex Sink said that as CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER she would review the private contracts for state services (that Jeb was so fond of) to see if Florida was getting a good deal. She has and has often found that it was cheaper and better for the state to do do the work with state empolyees. The woman knows how to add and SUBTRACT so some folks are going to come after her. 3. In 2012 the legislature will redraw THEIR districts and the govenor has to sign off on it. The Conservative wing of the Conservative Republican party had THEIR way the last go round to THEIR gerymandering delight. In a state that has more Demorcrats and Independents than Repubs we have a legislature that is over 2/3 Republican. 4.McCollum might be a dork/idelogical party hack, and Scott might be a thief, and Sink with her strong financial background might be the ideal canidate for the times, but there are big big obstacles that Sink will have to overcome to win.
