As Democrats in Congress scramble to figure out their options in the wake of a judge's decision to halt federally funded embryonic stem cell research pending trial, TPM has learned that Sen. Tom Harkin's Labor-HHS Appropriations subcommittee will hold hearings next month when the Senate comes back into session.
Harkin spokeswoman Bergen Kenny said the hearings will be held Sept. 16. Congress returns from recess earlier that week. They are still in the very early planning stages, so no title or witness list is yet available. The hearings will be raised in this subcommittee because it handles funding for the Department of Health and Human Services. The Dickey-Wicker amendment central to District Court Judge Royce Lambreth's ruling yesterday is attached to the HHS budget.
"Senator Harkin is very concerned about the disruption to this very important research," Kenny told TPM.
Congressional aides from both chambers said leadership is talking through possible remedies. White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton today told reporters that the administration is "exploring all possible avenues to make sure that we can continue to do this critical lifesaving research." Those avenues include legislation, Burton said.
Burton also confirmed what has emerged from TPM's reporting that this ruling seems to put research back to a more restrictive level than it was under former President George W. Bush. "We're still reviewing the decision from this judge, but what we've seen so far, from what we can tell, this would also stop the research that President Bush had allowed to go forward early in his presidency," Burton said in a briefing from the president's vacation spot in Martha's Vineyard.

It always surprises me when people refer to the post-election period as "lame duck". Seems to me that the founders did not want a recess between elections and swearing in. And, how's it "lame duck" if the same party retains power over both houses -- and of course, the presidency. This is a canard posited by republicans to imply the Dems won't retain control. In your fondest dreams -- generic ballot be damned, once voters get a closer look at some of these right-wing candidates (think Harry Reid debating Angle -- I'd pay for a ticket)and then show us how the real polls will go.

america falls behind in science while Europe and the rest of the world surges ahead in stem cell research, etc. - they will reap the benefits. new cures, new jobs, profits, etc.
i hope this dumb judge is stricken with a vile disease that can only be cured by some new stem cell medical approach- then he will see what he has done.
everyone who opposes stem cell research should be denied the benefits of this new medical research, and suffer without treatment.
what a bunch of religious idiots controlling the USA now. as the country goes down the drain.

Here are the 2 brilliant minds thatDavid Prentice dug up for the suit and they are not talking to the press "at the moment".
James Sherley once staged a hunger strike to protest a denial of tenure, which he blamed on racism. He was vocal in his opposition to abortion and the use of embryonic stem cells and frequently got into loud discussions with colleagues, including a shouting match in a school cafeteria, according to newspaper reports. In a 2009 letter to the Boston Globe, Sherley characterized abortion as "a social disease whose eradication requires a more enlightened society."
In 2008 Theresa Deisher claimed harassment by former colleagues amid an SEC inquiry. She was vice president of research and development for CellCyte Genetics Corp. in Seattle before leaving in 2007 to found AVM (short for Ave Maria) Biotech. Their main research area is developing alternative vaccines for rubella and chicken pox. You know why. These vaccines are grown in a cell line that was once isolated, many years ago from one aborted fetus. These vaccines are well established and effective, yet AVM is spending millions of dollar trying to find an alternative.
Well Theresa, maybe you should also eliminate from your research the far reaching implications on using the stem cell studies done at the expense of Henrietta Lacks. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123232331
