Sunday marked the first day that Christiane Amanpour hosted ABC's This Week, after Jake Tapper's extended, but temporary run. Amanpour hardly broke new ground in her debut, but she interviewed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, two of Washington's biggest newsmakers.
But conservatives were outraged by her broadcast, and the latest swipe at her comes from Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) via Twitter.
"Anyone else miss @jaketapper yesterday?" McCain asked.

McCain's staff was not immediately available to explain the tweet, but it comes as conservatives are piling on to Amanpour for a segment titled "In Memoriam" in which she said "We remember all of those who died in war this week, and the Pentagon released the names of 11 U.S. servicemembers killed in Afghanistan."
Her loudest critic, the Washington Post's Tom Shales, pounced, writing "Perhaps in keeping with the newly globalized program, the commendable "In Memoriam" segment ended with a tribute not to American men and women who died in combat during the preceding week but rather, said Amanpour in her narration, in remembrance of "all of those who died in war" in that period. Did she mean to suggest that our mourning extend to members of the Taliban?"
His line was echoed by the conservative site Newsbusters: "Shales even wondered if Amanpour thought we should mourn the Taliban fighters."
The UN reports (PDF) that, since it started keeping track in 2007, more than 6,000 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan
McCain -- one of the most regular guests on the Sunday news shows -- seems to be throwing in his lot with them.

yeah, the median IQ is 100, meaning that's where most people are in the intelligence bell curve. 70 is regarded as learning impaired, 130 genius. 95% of all people are in between the two, with most lumped right in the middle
combine that with fundamentalist, bigoted, greed-centric and otherwise right-wing brainwash, and you got some problems

Also not to nitpick, but learning impairment can occur at all IQ levels; it is not a description of an IQ level in any way. Perhaps you mean the more traditional characterizations of average, low average, borderline, etc.

well, you both are nitpicking, and arguing about semantics rather than the point at large. those over 130 constitute about 2% of all people. I'd say that qualifies as unusually smart according to the bell curve. I don't even like the term genius much anyway for reasons I won't bother going into here. as for those 70 and below, the other 2% end of the spectrum, call it what you want, but they've got serious mental deficiencies, whatever term you choose to label them with.

...may want to reconsider your derogatory terms, my friend:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=zipperhead
A derogatory term used in reference to people of Asian descent. It is said to have been coined during the Korean war by frontline troops whom had run over enemy troops in jeeps. The soldiers claimed that the tire tracks from the jeeps left a pattern resembling that of a closed zipper along the corpse.

Well, there are several etymologies, but the earliest refers to RCMP armored vehicle operators. It certainly has been used by veterans of Asian wars as a racial slur according to several sources, but I myself learned it from my Asian brother-in-law, who used it to describe a family of rednecks, the head of which punched my Iranian brother-in-law when he went to retrieve the ball he was throwing with my nephew from their blanket. It was the first time I heard the term and it stuck. To me it refers to people like this ignorant family. My apologies to anyone I offended.

It would appear that your informant was mistaken. Her husband is indeed Jewish, but her father's name was Mohammed, which makes me seriously doubt he could have been Jewish. Her mother was British, and I can't find any indication of mother's religion. But Amanpour's schooling from age 11 until she entered college was in Catholic girls' schools in Britain, and everything I can find about Amanpour herself says that her family was part of Iran's very small Christian minority.

Exactly. Zakaria tried and tried but this British Muslim fanatic wouldn't shut up and wouldn't answer him. Surprised he didn't pull out a hand grenade and destroy himself on camera. Zakaria, while conservative, is intelligent. I tape his show. Virtually the only show that will have a foreign guest like Lee Kuan Yew or British Chancellor of Exchequer, etc., on.

I don't think they truly object to her ethnicity OR her gender. It's her integrity that threatens them. They are simply using her ethnicity and gender to paint her as threatening, un-American, terrorist-sympathizing, liberal media blah blah blah blah blah blah blah-de-farking-blah-endless-stream-of-pure-self-serving-bullshit. I always thought she was one of the best foreign correspondents.
I thought her debut was fine, but to many she didn't play the 'Gotcha" game (you said back in 1990....), or did I miss it?
Russert was great at that, I always thought it was a useless exercise when it went back farther than a year or two because people change.

Eh, depends on the question. If it's a factual thing, it's probably useless past a month or so. Anybody can learn a new fact. If it's an opinion or policy question, a few years as you suggest is probably a good guideline. If it's a basic principle of your worldview and morality, I think it's fair to go back further.

Economides,
Reagan at Bitburg was a disgrace. The Wermacht was bad enough, but that cemetery also held Waffen SS, and there were no GIs there as the bodies had been moved to the US. Reagan also tried to downplay the SS there by saying there were many who were very young and drafted and had no choice. He obviously never met any of the Hitler Youth fanatics who permeated the Waffen SS. F**k Reagan who stayed in Hollywood while many other stars fought in that war.

After practicing racism-by-proxy through the TeaBaggers, notice how the GOBP is slowly bringing their bigotry out into the open as we near the November midterms. These attacks on Ms. Amanpour have nothing to do with her credibility as a journalist and everything to do with her ethnicity. John "did I ever tell you I was a P.O.W.?" McWalnuts is now openly advocating the same McCarthyesque bigotry the rest of his party has been financing by supporting the Tea Party movement.

I seem to recall that, a few years ago, the GOP chimps started shrieking and hurling their own feces through the holes in their cage when ABC aired a special that featured Ted Koppel reading off all the names of our recent war dead.
So no, it isn't just that Amanpour wasn't specific enough. They just don't want *anybody* to be reminded about our brave war dead and who sent them (President Bush) in the first place.

You recall correctly. They reacted as if it were the most subversive thing anyone could do.
But it's not true that they won't allow *anyone* to commemorate the war dead. Nancy Grace always has a tribute to a fallen soldier at the end of her show, and that has never seemed to upset them. Then again, unless my memory is wrong, it's only one, and usually it's someone who died several years ago.

I thought Amanpour was very good. She has a mind and some gravitas; Jake Tapper is basically a doofus. Also, he often came in for praise from Rush and Sean & Co., so once ABC found someone with a brain, the Right would be angry. As for McCain, previous poster has mentioned that he checked his soul long ago.
BTW, very good Sunday show on CNN is Fareed Zakaria, only one to always have non-US guests. He is somewhat right-wing but is intelligent and not an ideologue. Until recently, Amanpour's show followed his on CNN, but she didn't conduct it very long.

Did the right collectively lose all sense of shame when Goldwater, the great conscience of the conservatives, pass away?
I remember this guy back in 2000 named McCain: there was, even for a liberal like me, a whole lot to admire about the guy. He was honest, you got the sense that he would listen to reason, and whether you disagreed with him, he took positions on principle and with values that, as an American, I largely shared and in any event could respect.
Which bears no resemblance to the pandering reactionary McCain that debuted in 2008. You could put together video clips of McCain then and McCain now and construct a debate, the difference is that great. Its just a sad end to the career of a genuine American hero, and emblematic of the right when a figure of integrity becomes a bigot and, in this particular story, a cheap bully.

"Did the right collectively lose all sense of shame when Goldwater, the great conscience of the conservatives, pass away?"
Yes. They did.
I'm a firearm-owning disabled vet who grew up in and still lives in the Deep South. I'm part of their core effing demographic, and they ran *me* off for daring to question GOP orthodoxy on the Iraq war and on deficit spending.
They don't care about things like truth, honesty and consistency any more. They only care about power; getting it and keeping it. Nothing else matters.

The right wing is *so* hateful. They're just *so* hateful. How was it ever OK to even be someone like John McCain? And all those millions who got it about the stupidity of the Vietnam War, and the tens of millions who marched in the streets to stop the US from starting the Iraq War, and all we get are chowderheads who think war is something reasonable to be discussed, arguing with those who think it's un-American to count even a few, let alone admit we slaughter vast numbers of poor people in our delusional political theater wars.
It's like their brains are made of foetid cheese.

I'd say we are well into the second act by now. Stock up on canned goods and ammo, and start practicing your woodchopping skills, if you haven't already.

Republican men feel their masculinity threatened by smart women. They like the subserviant type that stay home, can fruit, raise babies and never have an original thought. Put simply, they are afraid of Christianne. Let's hope that ABC has the guts to give her a fair chance. They might be surprised and see an uptick in ratings. Lord knows, Sunday mornings have had a big void in quality programing since Russert's death.

Well, they've got their Taligangelicals, Phyllis Schlafly types, and they damn sure don't like foreigners. These people prattle on about "American exceptionalism." It's tantamount to institutional racism in Japan, where non-Japanese are regarded as barbarians.
And she's not reading their talking points, so they look for Amanpour's birth certificate: "She completed her primary education in Iran and at the age of 11, her parents sent her to boarding school in England." Uh-huh.
"Let's hope that ABC has the guts to give her a fair chance."
Don't count on it.
"Sunday mornings have had a big void in quality programing since Russert's death."
No doubt about that, yes indeed.

It's unrealistic that Americans are going to accept a Sunday program led by someone with an accent, first of all. What the hell were they thinking?
And I know some of you are going to now try to say Amanpour doesn't have an accent. Puh-lease!
And the "all who died" jazz is *way* out of line for an American audience, no question.

The genius of the program was that there were no commercials for like the first 29 minutes. I think ABC is on to something. The disappointment was that the global warming comment at the end of the broadcast was limited to photos of kids getting wet, even as forest fires burned in 23 of Russia's 83 regions.

To answer Sen McCain's query: no, I do not miss Jake Tapper. Rather, I miss John McCain and wonder where he wandered off to. He's never been the same upright fellow he appeared after South Carolina 2000. Too sad.

In Memoriam tried but didn't succeed in conveying to the WP the fact that there are other conflicts across the globe besides Iraq and Afghanistan which claim of the lives of innocent people - Somalia, Southern Sudan, the Congo; Gaza and the turbulent Central Asian Republics to name but a few. The WP decided to ignore these and stir the pot by arbitrarily suggesting Amanpour included the Taliban. Of course, she didn't. It's obvious and disturbing, however, that the WP's editorial cup of human kindness is empty. Mourning, according to them, should be exclusive and homogenized.

McCain can always go on Fox and help Chris Wallace slowly dismember his former career as a journalist.

What's with all the right-wing disdain for Amanpour?
She has an international perspective in her reporting, so she's not as America-centric as Fox, but she's always struck me as a pretty fair minded reporter.

This puts McCain in a tough spot. Will he really be able to stand having one less camera to sit in front of, act sincere and babble-on about "straight talk?" What is an attention whore to do!

I thought she did a great job.
But now she'll have to have the old coot on yet AGAIN to placate him.
Let the games begin (again).
However, Amanpour, like Jon Stewart, is unlikely to be intimidated. If I were McCain, I'd decline to put myself under that particular spotlight again. She'll have him for lunch.

If she did have him on, again, - he'd likely stipulate the type of questions to be asked and the direction of the conversation. Were she to cross any of those lines he'd most likely walk out, faster than he walked out on his first marriage.

Ms Amanpour DID break new ground. She interviewed a foreign journalist, who added balance to the conversation. The journalist brought home the fact that Wikileaks documents were news only to us, the rest of the world already knew just about every detail.

McCain is practically a founding member of the "Military-Industrial Complex" Eisenhower warned the nation about and accurately predicted as the most dangerous internal threat to this nation.
It's unfortunate that he chose that term though, for too many think it infers a criticism of the military, when he meant no such thing.
"Military - Industrial Complex" broken down means the "commercial industries" who has as their main source of revenue and profit "making war."
Naturally they need the military to wage those wars, but the "military" is as much under the thrall via their extensive army of lobbyists as the nation. That's what Secretary Gates is fighting with his forceful demands for minor cutbacks.
Unfortunately, the nation as a whole is oblivious to this distinction that makes all the difference in meaning. So attacking the 'military industrial complex" to many sounds like you're saying our military is worthless.
