Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was asked today about growing calls from Republicans to hold hearings about the 14th Amendment and whether children born to illegal immigrants can rightfully be citizens.
Reid (D-NV) quoted extensively from a column written by Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson on Friday. Reid read this portion from the podium of his press conference:
The authors of the Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed citizenship to all people "born or naturalized in the United States" for a reason. They wished to directly repudiate the Dred Scott decision, which said that citizenship could be granted or denied by political caprice. They purposely chose an objective standard of citizenship -- birth -- that was not subject to politics. Reconstruction leaders established a firm, sound principle: To be an American citizen, you don't have to please a majority, you just have to be born here.
Then Reid said of Republicans pushing the issue, "They've either taken leave of their senses or their principles."

Lee Atwater (a S.C. native, where his training ground began and remains today) is back from the dead as he is every two years during the election season. What is so frightening is that this strategy is know, practiced, sanctioned and condoned by large members of the RNC/GOP, members of the media, members of the public and members of the RNC/GOP leadership.
The Atwater Death Squad: They wanted them dead or alive, it did not matter as long as their opponent did not win (if you are not with us then you are against us thus becoming our target and it is open season - shoot to kill). Mercy did not matter and no one was off limits. Children, Spouses, Parents, Religious figures, Political figures, Institutions, Corporations, Churches, Religions, Their Own - for them it was/is a blood sport and if you died in the process, you became a causality of war. Long term suffering was the sweet nectar of the win, the longer the suffering the better.
Lets look at how Atwater reported the strategy and how it can/has been repackaged while keeping the same meaning/objectives - the faithful know the code words and what they really mean:
Atwater: As to the whole Southern strategy that Harry Dent and others put together in 1968, opposition to the Voting Rights Act could have been a central part of keeping the South. Now [the new Southern Strategy of Ronald Reagan] doesn’t have to do that. All you have to do to keep the South is for Reagan to run in place on the issues he's campaigned on since 1964 and that's fiscal conservatism, balancing the budget, cut taxes, you know, the whole cluster.
Questioner: But the fact is, isn't it, that Reagan does get to the Wallace voter and to the racist side of the Wallace voter by doing away with legal services, by cutting down on food stamps?
Atwater: You start out in 1954 by saying, “N-word*, N-word, N-word." By 1968 you can't say "N-Word" — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "N-Word, N-word, N-word”.
Lee Atwater to the New York Times; * Atwater said the word, he did not say N-Word, this modification has been made to the original actual quoted text.
What Groups/Topics/People have always been on the list? These have been some of the staples since the inception of the strategy beginning in 1968 as communicated by Lee Atwater and the Southern Strategy remains in play for 2010:
1) African Americans ( 2010: Social Services, ACORN, NBPParty (membership ranges between 12 and 40 - best estimates), Van Jones, Tea Party Membership, Shirley Sherrod (this one backfired but hold your horses, the next one is on the way - the main drivers of these in the past will not disappoint us).
2) Guns (2010:they are coming for your guns and the latest is a proposal to make gun
ownership mandatory to defend ones-self against the USA Government).
3) State Rights (2010: Immigration, Gay Marriage, DOMA, and busing in a few states).
4) Cut Taxes: (2010: Do not let the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire regardless of the negative impact on the short term and long term negative impact on the deficit. Also lower the corporate tax rates).
5) Balance the Budget is now Deficit Reduction: (2010: Reduce the deficit but keep the tax cuts which will increase the deficit by and estimated $3-$4 trillion dollars - no deficit reduction in actuality but it polls well).
6) Destroy the Unions: (2010: focus on the bad unions but leave the good unions alone).
What Groups/Topics/People are on the target list in 2010 so far; which includes the staples from the inception of the strategy in 1968 as noted above. Be reminded, truth has nothing to do with it, it is about Red Meat (Atwater, from his death bed, apologized to some of the people that he had wronged, openly admitting the he knew what was being said were lies.) The truth did not matter, the only thing that mattered was winning. Win at any cost and step over the bodies in your wake. Remember this is war.
1) Hispanics: (includes Illegal Immigration, 14th Amendment Repeal, State Rights, Border Security).
2) Gays: (includes DADT, DOMA, Amtrak Rider-ship, Gay Marriage, Gay Rights).
3) Muslims: ( includes Sharia Law and the NYC proposed Civic Center).
4) The 44th American President: (Muslim, Citizenship, Socialism, Communist, Marxist, Racist, Hates White People).
Who are the Atwater Death Squad Members today? More importantly, who are the new recruits? It appears there are more women joining the Atwater Party and they are not blind to history and they have members of the old guard as their mentors.

Cue a Rasmussen poll showing that 52% of Americans don't believe that children of illegal immigrants should be granted citizenship via birthright. (I expect it in my inbox either tomorrow AM or the next day) That will probably be followed by Juan Williams or Pat Caddell or some other FoxNews fake liberal whipping boy saying that the Dems are playing with fire if Reid tries to shutdown McConnell's request - "the arguments deserve to be heard, blah, blah, blah) Then queue the FoxNews interview with Scotty Rass followed by days of FNC commentators stating the McConnell is only doing what the people want.
Governing by Rasmussen poll and fear. A lovely state of affairs.

I say again... NONE of our leaders have the right to even TALK about principles, when BOTH MOBS trampled upon our heros and patriots who fought and died for two hundred years to PROTECT people from being tortured, murdered, and held without trial at the whim of someone because they had the power to do so...
Reid, as well as others in this administration and the Republicans lost their ability to judge ANYONE.
And they certainly are completely amoral when they talk at all about honor, integrity and patriotism, after promoting and protecting this behavior.
About two million dead patriots lying in their graves while fighting for "REAL PRINCPLES" can attest to this... IMHO

Your first attempt at this line of thought was just subtle enough. This is unhinged absurdity. If you can't tell the difference between people who actively torture people and others who refuse to torture, make it their policy not to do so, but also don't engage in a futile attempt to prosecute those in the first group at the expense of everything else they consider politically important, then you lack any kind of critical thinking. And if you really can't tell any difference between the parties, you're an idiot, in the original, Greek sense.

Let me explain/ correct you.TheRepublicans have been playing to bigots since Nixon's southern strategy in '68. The Teabaggers are a logical and direct outcome of that strategy. Ignorance, racism, fear, and xenophobia are the levers that move these people. The GOPers have a tiger by the tail, and they dare not let go. So you see, they never HAD any principles. SCOTUS have been looking to(and citing in decisions) British and European law since the beginning of our Republic. For instance, try reading one of the seminal cases on this subject, US versus Wong Ark Kim 1898- http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=us&vol=169&invol=649. You'll find that the court alludes to '300 yrs' of ENGLISH case law.
You display the unfortunate ignorance that so many of the people that you feel such affinity to(Teabaggers).
Your final point really is quite pathetic. You WANT to more like Mexico or Saudi Arabia? That's just weird.

That's an odd question to ask. You know what makes us more like Mexico? Tens of millions of illegal Mexican immigrants receiving birthright citizenship that YOU want in the country.
I thought I was clear that I was talking about the countries that you are always saying are better than us like Sweden had changed their law to not allow birthright citizenship to illegal immigrants.

Silly conservatroll!
"Tens of millions of illegal Mexican immigrants receiving birthright citizenship that"....
So wait a second: They are receiving birthright citizenship. So how can they be illegal aliens? Birthright citizenship means "born a citizen". So how can they be illegal immigrants if they are born citizens of the united states?
