A new poll from Time magazine out this morning suggests it's not a great time to be a Muslim in America if you're trying to build a community center in lower Manhattan or hoping to get nominated to the Supreme Court or run for President.

Simply put, it's not a great time for American Muslims to try and exercise those Constitutionally-granted rights of theirs.

The poll finds that Americans overwhelmingly oppose the planned Muslim community center near Ground Zero in lower Manhattan -- and overwhelmingly support the notion that building it is an insult to the the families of the victims of 9/11. Sixty-one percent of respondents to the poll said that the Cordoba House shouldn't be built at the site of that old Burlington Coat Factory, while "more than 70%" concurred "with the premise that proceeding with the plan would be an insult to the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center."

So it seems property rights are out for American Muslims. Just 55% of respondents said they'd be happy with a mosque being built two blocks from their own home (by contrast: more than 70% said they'd be OK with a Catholic church or Jewish synagogue built in the same location.)

It seems that, according to many Americans, public service for Muslims isn't a great career move, either.

Twenty-eight percent of those surveyed by Time said Muslims shouldn't be eligible for a seat on the Supreme Court. And 32% said they shouldn't be allowed to serve as President.

So that's a few possible careers down. But there's a lotta fish in the sea. And at least American Muslims are still welcomed as freedom-loving Americans by their fellow citizens, right?

Not so much.

The Time poll found that just 55% of those surveyed said that Muslims living in the U.S. are "are patriotic Americans who believe in American values." A quarter of respondents said that they knew for sure that that American Muslims are not patriots. Twenty-one percent declined to answer to said they didn't know.

Time surveyed 1,002 Americans Aug. 16-17. The poll has a margin of error of 3%.

Also I would like to point out if the Media had something relevant to cover, this wouldn't be an issue.

Apparently, 4.6 million people in desperate need of food, shelter and drinking water in flood-stricken Pakistan are just not that newsworthy.

The media do have relevant things to cover but they are boring. I am thinking of the economy, jobs, the oil spill, the Constitution, housing, etc.

Why did Obama have to get involved? Leave it alone. But hey, it did take the recession/depression off the front page. I feel better now, still unemployed, but I guess things are looking up. Right?

Agreed, though now more people think he's a muslim, even though he's a practicing christian....

But it is the Job the prez to make sure the masses don't rule by emotion and guide the country and he was completely correct in stating that the rule of law states that Cordoba House has every right to build on the private property they own.

It was a NYC issue and would have been resolved locally with a classic NYC high drama resolution. Instead, we now have a giant clusterfuck with the Republicans once again controlling the narrative. Thank you Mr. President. Enjoy your 10 day vacation.

There's a third part to the question that is not being asked.

Do you believe they have to Constitutional right to build at 51Park. 65% yes

Do you believe despite the Constitutional right to build, that it should be built at 51Park. 61% no

Should the developers exercise their Constitutional right to move forward at 51Park despite the public opinion opposing it, then what?

"then what" - there are about 300 mosques in NYS and maybe 100 in the five boroughs of NY. Can they find another location?

CV, why don't you think that the developers should NOT build? What do you base your opposition on? I know you personally lost someone close to you on 9/11 but that doesn't explain your opposition.

Do you think all Muslims support Al Qaeda?

My reasons are simple: building the Mosque/Community Center at that location is for me disrespectful and insensitive to the 9/11 victims and their families, and will be viewed by many Americans as an unnecessary act of arrogance (which is the opposite of all my experiences with Muslims). Till two days ago I never sensed Americans as having any particular resentment toward American Muslims. I think building on this site will change all that - aided of course but the crazies on the right. At the end of the day they will build it where they build it, and hopefully by Christmas it will all be forgotten. Robert Moses, the great NY builder, built roads and bridges and parks in NY as well as the Worlds Fair. And in the process he trampled on people's rights whenever they, or their dwellings, got in the way. And the city did nothing. He got things done but was as ruthless as he was famous. This mosque location controversy, in the NYC scheme of things, isn't really that big a deal.

And no, I don't think Muslims support Al Qaeda. Personally I think Al Qaeda exists only in the minds of our military, Pentagon, and MIC. And the MSM. Kind of like shooting a fly with a shotgun - but good for business.

Fair enough. I can always count on you to give me your opinion without being vitriolic or defensive. That's why I follow you around. :)

I support building the mosque because I have close friends who happen to be Muslim and they were just as horrified on 9/11 as I was. This whole debate makes me ashamed to the point where I feel like calling them up to apologize.

My anger comes into play when I see the issue being used as a political wedge. Make no mistake, the wingnuts have there bloggers working overtime to stir up people's fears. I wonder how many more times these bastards can use the politics of division. Forever I guess.

At this point it doesn't really matter if they build it or not because some group or another is going to be pissed off with the result.

IMO building the mosque would send a message, both at home and to the world, that we won't allow ourselves to be divided by ideologue's, religious or political.

This just shows intellectually bankruptcy thriving at every end of the political spectrum in this country.

It's like suggesting not to believe in anything, but calibrate your principles to poll numbers. That's why the entire political system has become a two horse game.

Would love to see a third horse coming around the back turn sneaking up on the rails - as we head into the stretch - scaring the two nags into an inspired race. You're correct, these two nags think it's their track. Problem is, so do we. America needs to get lucky. Pretty pathetic solution I know. That's all I got.

That really is institutionalized thinking.Simply put it's not a great time for Americans. Periods. I wish some kind of massive resistance movement begins from the left. I really think left has near zero political representation in the halls of powers.

You cannot emphasize the inalienable rights enough.

But of course they are for the freedom of religion clause BUT not in this 'SENSITIVE' case.

Remember its like building a shinto shrine at pearl harbor or like yelling fire in a crowded theatre or even like nazi waving signs at the Holocaust museum. Got those 3 talking points jotted down, or must I repeat myself?

Well that's it then. Clearly, nothing left to do but round 'em up, pack 'em onto trains and "relocate" them to some hazily defined "resettlement area" from whence they never return or are seen again to trouble our thoughts.

Oh, wait, not yet. There's probably a lost war or two we'll need to blame on them first.

All righty then, Kristallnacht is just around the corner for the Muslims in the U.S.A! As all 61% of Americans now know, or soon will, it is their very existence that the economy tanked, that Iraq had to be attacked, that global warming got serious, that unemployment continues to rise, that gays and lesbians want to legally tie the knot, and ACORN tricked us all into electing a half black president. If only there were some way to take them out of our general society to protect us quasi-Christians from their evil influence and they (the unwashed, ignorant, heathens) from the eventual angry mobs? Perhaps some sort of camps where they could practice their religion safely away from an inflamed public. Not sure but I seem to remember this idea having been used before to some success? At the very least these camps would probably improve employment opportunities as the Muslim work force would be removed plus we would need to hire "Real Americans" to be guards at these camps. I am not saying it is the best solution but maybe the final one.

Hey Zebracat, I was just thinking that the Kristallnacht analogy. I swear to God, if there is another terror attack in this country on scale to OKC not even 9/11 and a Muslim angry at America b/c of its policies in the Muslim world... is behind it, I shudder to think the consequences.

We have already become dehumanized by the GOP, then next step is violence/internment (which will be put before us as an option for our "own safety")/more endless wars.

Time to pack the bags and move to Canada..."O Canada..." Lol, hey look I already know their national anthem by heart.

Thank God we have a constitutin guaranteeing freedom of religion and that we do not react to every spot poll conducted by bogus news organizations and reported as news. It doesn't matter what the misinformed FAUX viewers think. They are misinformed, angry, afraid, bigoted, and not very intelligent and we do not give them what they want if the law does not say so.

UGH! Rampant idiocy. Can't call it anti-semitism, but it's close:

wiki: Semite: ... a few Semitic languages today are the base of the sacred literature of some of the world's great religions, including Islam (Arabic), Judaism (Hebrew and Aramaic), and Orthodox Christianity (Aramaic and Ge'ez).

Extremist muslims want to see our American muslims just as dead, especially in NYC. If anything a project like this defies extremism, but instead we flail like a wounded wolverine at anything that looks like or sounds like a threat.
