Third-party Colorado gubernatorial candidate Tom Tancredo was bruised and scraped after wrecking his Harley-Davidson in an accident on Sunday, but walked away from the crash, he told 7 News in Denver.

The 64-year-old Tancredo says he was cut off by a driver merging onto a road from a parking lot in Littleton, Colorado.

“She just didn’t see me,” Tancredo said. “It sent me flying and the motorcycle flying about 40 or 50 yards along the ground.”

Tancredo said he wasn’t wearing a helmet (he also pointed out that he had once sponsored legislation making it voluntary for motorcyclists to wear them), and was just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. He said he was riding home after a haircut and watching his grandson’s high school baseball game.

“It is the darnedest thing,” he said. “I’m conscious. I’m just sliding along the pavement. It seemed like it was forever. And I’m thinking, ‘I’m going to hit something or something is going to hit me.’”

“I am a lucky person. I got up and I thought to myself, ‘I’m in one piece here, I’m vertical, and thank you, Lord,’” Tancredo said.

Tancredo told 7 News that after the wreck, he first did a talk radio interview and then went to the hospital.

The TPM Poll Average for the gubernatorial race shows Tancredo (21.0%) trailing Democrat John Hickenlooper (46.2%) and Republican Dan Maes (22.1%).
