TPM Brings You The GOP ‘Pledge To America’ Governing Agenda (In Draft Form)

Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) and Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) with members of the Republican House leadership

TPM has obtained a draft version of the GOP “Pledge to America” — the House Republicans’ official platform going into November.

Republicans have been very public about certain aspects of their agenda, which we’ve reported here. They are contained in the Pledge, along with other proposals.

Despite indications earlier this summer that Republicans might use the Pledge to call for Social Security privatization, the language used in the document is much softer. It says, instead, “We will make the decisions that are necessary to protect our entitlement programs for today’s seniors and future generations. That means requiring a full accounting of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, setting benchmarks for these programs and reviewing them regularly, and preventing the expansion of unfunded liabilities.”

You can access the entire document below, but here are some other highlights:

  1. Repeal health care reform, replace with GOP alternative: “We offer a plan to repeal and replace the government takeover of health care with common-sense solutions focused on lowering costs and protecting American jobs. We will enact real medical liability reform; allow Americans to purchase health coverage across state lines; empower small businesses with greater purchasing power; and create new incentives to save for future health needs. We will protect the doctor-patient relationship, and ensure that those with pre-existing conditions gain access to the coverage they need. We will permanently end taxpayer funding of abortion and codify the Hyde Amendment.”
  2. Indefinite detention: “We will keep terrorist combatants in Guantanamo Bay not in our local jails and courtrooms.”
  3. Bush tax cuts: “We will help the economy by permanently stopping all tax increases, currently scheduled to take effect January 1, 2011.”
