Before the House voted to defund Planned Parenthood on Friday, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) revealed on the floor of the House that she herself had had an abortion procedure.
Speier revealed her personal story after a graphic description of the procedure was read aloud by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) that Speier said “put her stomach in knots.”
“I’m one of those women he spoke about just now,” Speier said. “I had a procedure at 17 weeks.”
“I lost a baby,” Speier said. “But for you to stand on this floor and suggest and you have that somehow this is a procedure that is either welcomed or done cavalierly or done without any thought is preposterous.”
“There is a vendetta against Planned Parenthood, and it was played out in this room last night,” Speier said. “Last time you checked, abortions were legal in this country.”
