Forget that moderate governor of a blue state period of his life: Mitt Romney is going full-on tea partier.
As 2012 draws ever closer, Romney is stepping up his attacks on President Obama and the Democratic party — including questioning their respect for America. In a new edition of his book No Apology, Romney reportedly takes some hard swipes at Obama, writing that “my worst fears about the president have come true.”
From the Boston Globe’s Matt Viser, who got an early look at the new introduction to Romney’s bestseller:
“Rather than focusing his energy and political capital on solving the economic crisis, he exploited it to promote his extreme liberal agenda,” Romney writes in the new paperback version of “No Apology,” according to excerpts provided to the Globe.“We need a U-turn from the policies of the past few years,” he adds.
Romney goes hard-line against Democrats, too — sounding more like potential 2012 rival Sarah Palin than the former governor Massachusetts, who made his reputation reaching out to the opposition party in his state.
“They simply do not believe in America as it was shaped by the Founders,” he writes. “They do not believe that the principles and values that made America a great nation still apply.”
In a nod to what will likely be the central issue of his expected presidential campaign (as well as President Obama’s), Viser writes that Romney attempts to separate himself from the so-called Obamacare law — ironic, “since the national plan was largely based on the one Romney steered to passage in Massachusetts.”
