Herman Cain: I Regret Saying Michele Bachmann Pandered To Evangelicals At Faith And Freedom

GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain

If he had to to it all over again, Herman Cain says he probably wouldn’t have told TPM that Rep. Michele Bachmann’s (R-MN) political-themed prayer at a social conservative and evangelical gathering in Washington June 3 sounded like the “the ultimate pander.”

Cain told the Weekly Standard’s John McCormack that that description was a mistake.

“I regret using that word,” he said.

Bachmann led the audience in prayer following her address to the Faith And Freedom Conference, a social conservative gathering hosted by Ralph Reed.

When told about the prayer by TPM, Cain — an associate minister at a Baptist Church in Atlanta — was disdainful. In the interview with McCormack, he changed his tune, and took a swipe at TPM for reporting the “pander” line in the first place.

“Because it was a faith-based audience, it was perfectly appropriate for her to pray,” he said. “It was just a quick reaction in the midst of an interview, that became the headline, which quite frankly pissed me off.”
