Mitt Romney Takes GOP Friendly Fire In Michigan

Mitt Romney’s got enough to worry about without this: Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) is holding a rally Wednesday to accuse Romney of basically being exactly the same as Barack Obama.

Romney is in Michigan this week, stumping through his native land and raising money. Democrats are having a field day, dispatching former Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) to yet again attack him over his opposition to the auto bailouts.

He’s facing an even stronger attack from his fellow Republican.

McCotter, home for recess, scheduled his own Detroit-area rally Wednesday to coincide with Romney’s Michigan visit. The event was announced by his congressional staff as a “harsh welcome” for Romney. The title of the gathering is “Discussion Economy, Jobs and the Mitt Romney-Obama Ticket.”

“Motor City Hospitality dictates a Michigan message to Mitt,” McCotter said in a statement. “Our struggling families, entrepreneurs and workers think Mr. Romney and Mr. Obama are not rivals, they’re running mates.”

As the Democrats have done, McCotter appears to be attacking Romney over his 2008 New York Times op-ed entitled “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.”

The four-term Congressman has been smacking the GOP presidential field around for a while, even threatening to jump into the mix himself last month. McCotter says there needs to be more focus on restricting the growth of China and “whether moral relativism erodes a nation built on self-evident truth,” he told Politico.

Team Romney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
