Obama Taps Krueger As Top Economic Adviser

Alan Krueger

President Barack Obama Monday announced his selection of Princeton economist Alan Krueger as his choice to succeed Austan Goolsbee as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers.

Krueger served as the top economist at the Treasury Department during the first two years of Obama's presidency and previously as Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy at the Labor Department during the Clinton administration.

Obama Administration Highlights Positive Economic Numbers

The Obama administration is pushing back against GOP claims on the campaign trail, including those of frontrunner Mitt Romney, that the White House's economic policies are failing.

A report by the White House Council of Economic Advisers released Monday shows foreign direct investment in the U.S. surging with a 49 percent increase in 2010 from 2009 levels in the nadir of the financial crisis.

In an e-mailed statement, President Obama touted his administration's "open investment policy," arguing that it has helped spur economic growth and job creation.

"By voting with their balance sheets, businesses from abroad have clearly stated that the United States is one of the best places in the world to invest," Obama said in the statement.

Obama: The Economic Recovery Has "Got To Accelerate"

After several lackluster economic reports and the announced departure of one of his top economic advisers, President Obama insisted that he isn't worried about the nation falling into a double-dip recession but acknowledged that the recovery has "got to accelerate."

"Obviously, we're experiencing some headwinds," Obama said at a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, although he cautioned that the most recent unemployment report only showed a short-term downtick in job growth.

White House Pushes Back Against S&P Pessimism

President Barack Obama

President Obama's team of economic advisers is downplaying Standard & Poor's negative outlook release Monday on the U.S. AAA credit rating, arguing that it's more pessimistic about Washington's ability to reduce the nation's $14 trillion debt than it should be.

White House spokesman Jay Carney pointed out in a briefing with reporters that Moody's, one of S&P's competitors -- gives the U.S. a "credit positive" rating

"We think the prospects are better -- that the political process will outperform S&P's expectations," Carney told reporters Monday.

Boehner: I'll Drop Tax Cut for Rich If I Have To
Appearing on Face The Nation, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) indicated that a compromise on renewal of the Bush tax cuts -- to renew only the tax cuts for those making under $250,000, and allow the tax cuts for higher-incomes to expire -- could be possible. "I want to do something for all Americans who pay taxes," Boehner said. "If the only option I have is to vote for some of those tax reductions, I'll vote for it. But I've been making the point now for months that we need to extend all the current rates for all Americans if we want to get our economy going again, and we want to get jobs in America."

Goolsbee: U.S. Can't Afford Tax Cuts for High-End Earners
Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Austan Goolsbee indicated the Obama administration's strong position against renewing the Bush tax cuts for those making over $250,000 per year. "The president strongly believes that ... after a decade of astounding squeeze on the middle class that was followed by the worst recession in our lifetime ... you cannot afford to raise taxes on the middle class. We should make that permanent," Goolsbee said. But he also added: "What we cannot afford to do is pass 700 billion additional dollars of tax cuts for the millionaires and billionaires at a time when we are just going to borrow that money."

Goolsbee To Replace Romer As White House Economics Adviser (VIDEO)

Austan Goolsbee, Chief Economist on the Economic Recovery Advisory Board

Last night, the White House leaked the news that economic adviser Austan Goolsbee will succeed Christina Romer as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. In an administration whose economic policy is so dominated by Larry Summers, Goolsbee's most important role will likely be to present -- and perhaps spin -- those policies to the public. Goolsbee has a wry sense of humor in public and a taste for the jugular, which sets him apart from Romer, who had a light touch and delivered even the worst news with a chirpy smile.

Goolsbee previously served as Staff Director and Chief Economist of the President's Recovery Advisory Board. He's advocated for letting the Bush tax cuts for the rich expire, and, as a close ally of Paul Volcker, for tougher regulations on financial institutions.

TPMDC Morning Roundup

Obama To Take GOP To Task On Economy, Tax Cuts
The Associated Press reports on President Obama's upcoming press conference today: "Striving to gain the upper hand on a crucial political issue, President Barack Obama is faulting Republicans for refusing to help him turn around the sluggish economy or support some proposed new tax breaks for businesses that the GOP has backed in the past. Obama has argued that case many times recently. But on Friday he takes it to an audience of millions, including many who will vote in November's decisive congressional elections, during a nationally televised news conference from the White House East Room."

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama will receive the presidential daily briefing at 9:30 a.m. ET. He will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. ET. He will then meet with senior advisers at 12:30 p.m. ET.
