The Goodbyes Of 2010: Politicians Who Are Going Home

As the year 2010 comes to a close and the year 2011 begins, it's time to look back on some of the politicians who are leaving office because of defeat, retirement, or the strange spaces that seem to fall in between.
These are folks who had a presence on the political scene, either long or short, but who have made their marks in different ways on the political consciousness in their arrivals, their service and their ultimate departures.
As is the fashion with these sorts of lists we do around here, the folks we've chosen to highlight include the folks that we and you, our readers, think of as being great -- and others who are so bad that they're good. Of course, there are plenty of departing pols who aren't here. This is just a sampling.
So goodbye to 2010, and goodbye to these politicians. But who knows, perhaps we'll be seeing some of them again, soon.

Sanders: Republicans 'Do Not Want America To Succeed'
Appearing on Face The Nation, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) accused Republicans of deliberately blocking legislation in order to stop job creation, and thus improve their chances in the election. "I think in his heart the president is a very, very decent guy; he wants to do what most Americans want him to do: To reach out, bring people together," said Sanders. "But what has happened is the Republicans have said 'no, no, no.' They have waged more filibusters than any time in the history of this country. They have been the party of 'no' and obstructionism. At some point, what the president has got to understand [is] they do not want America to succeed. They're into politics."
Richardson: Dems Should Take On Tea Party
Appearing on Face The Nation, Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) said that Democrats should more forcefully take on the Tea Party movement. "For some reason everyone is scared of them," said Richardson. "What they really want to do to this country, when they talk about reducing deficits, is they're cutting into Medicare, Medicaid, firefighters, teachers, nurses, people's benefits, Social Security. I think it's important that we not be defensive, that we be strong, but we have to unify and stop the internal carping."

Obama Pitches Road Spending, Tax Incentives In Ohio
Reuters reports: "President Barack Obama will push billions of dollars in new business tax incentives and spending on big construction projects on Wednesday, as he tries to convince a balky Congress to pass measures intended to spur the economy and create jobs. Obama will travel to Ohio to tout programs that include accelerating $200 billion in business tax write-offs, which the White House says would eventually cost just $30 billion, an infrastructure spending boost of at least $50 billion, and increasing and permanently extending a tax credit for research and development costing $100 billion over 10 years. Obama's speech is expected to be strongly political and it comes less than two months before congressional elections when his Democrats face the threat of big losses."

President Obama and Vice President Biden will receive the presidential daily briefing at 9:45 a.m. ET. Obama will depart from the White House at 12:05 p.m. ET, and depart from Andrews Air Force Base at 12:20 p.m. ET, arriving at 1:30 p.m. ET in Cleveland, Ohio. He will deliver remarks on the economy at 2:10 p.m. ET, at Cuyahoga Community College West Campus in Parma, Ohio. He will depart from Cleveland at 3:50 p.m. ET, arriving back at Andrews Air Force Base at 5 p.m. ET, and at the White House at 5:15 p.m. ET. He will meet with senior advisers at 5:20 p.m. ET.

Immigration Reform: The Hot Tamale No One Wants To Touch

Attorney General Eric Holder Sunday denied that the timing of the Justice Department's lawsuit against Arizona's immigration law has anything to do with the looming midterm elections. But question remain about whether the Obama administration really did bring the lawsuit now to help Democrats with Latino voters and drive a wedge between Republicans this fall.
If so, the lawsuit is likely to be the only immigration policy action on which lawmakers will be able to campaign, if the Sunday show appearances by members of Congress are any indication of the lack of appetite for passing a comprehensive immigration reform measure this year.
