Bobby Jindal's Values Voter Summit Joke: Anthony Weiner Is Kinda Like A Pedophile!

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA)

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) knows just how to crack up the audience at the Values Voter Summit: just make a joke about former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) being a pedophile.

After a long winded speech about all his accomplishments protecting children from sex offenders, Jindal brought it home.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's (R) reelection campaign just got the prostitution scandal bump.

A few months after Jindal publicly declined to endorse Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) for reelection last year, Vitter is being the bigger person and endorsing Jindal for another term as governor anyway.

Team Jindal told reporters in Louisiana the governor is "appreciative of the senator's support."

Obama: 'Not A Day That Goes By That I'm Not Focused On Your Jobs'
In this weekend's YouTube address, President Obama spoke from the Allison Transmissions plant in Indianapolis, Indiana, a clean ' company, to stress that he is still focusing on the economy in addition to the big news from the past week about the killing of Osama bin Laden.

"A lot of folks are still looking for work. And many folks who do have jobs are finding that their paychecks aren't keeping up with the rising costs for everything from tuition to groceries to gas. In fact, in a lot of places across the country, like Indiana, gas is reaching all-time high," said Obama.

"So although our economy hasn't been the focus of the news this week, not a day that goes by that I'm not focused on your jobs, your hopes and your dreams. And that's why I came here to Allison Transmissions. The clean ' jobs at this plant are the jobs of the future - jobs that pay well right here in America. And in the years ahead, it's clean ' companies like this one that will keep our economy growing, create new jobs, and make sure America remains the most prosperous nation in the world."

Gov. Jindal Will Sign Louisiana's Birther Bill If It Gets To Him

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) may have vetoed her state's so-called birther bill, but a spokesman for Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) said Monday that Jindal would sign Louisiana's own version of the bill if it reaches his desk.

"It's not part of our package, but if the Legislature passes it we'll sign it," said Kyle Plotkin, Jindal's press secretary, the New Orleans Times Picayune reports.

Bobby Jindal: Tax Cut Deal 'Best Legislation' From Congress In Two Years

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) says that, as long as Democrats don't screw it up too much, the tax cut compromise plan set to work its way through Congress this week is the best law that the federal government has enacted since President Obama took office.

"We have a Democratic Congress that doesn't leave office until January 5, taxes are set to go up on January 1 without this agreement, and once Washington raises taxes, it almost never cuts them," Jindal told the National Review. "If we can get this through the Democratic Congress, even with its flaws, it will be the best legislation they've passed in two years,"

Jindal Neutral In Louisiana GOP Senate Primary

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) and Senator David Vitter (R-LA)

Looks like Governor Bobby Jindal is staying out of the Louisiana GOP Senate Primary. In a statement, his spokesman Kyle Plotkin says, "Right now, the Governor is focused on fighting the oil spill and working to lift the moratorium. There will be time to discuss endorsements in the coming months."

Emphasis on the word "months," plural. Asked whether that implies Jindal won't make any political endorsements until after the primary, his staff reiterated the same comment. That takes us past the August 28th primary, and into the general election campaign, when Jindal will surely endorse whomever wins the Republican nomination.

In the meantime, it seems, he'll let Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) fight it out with his new, and formidable, primary challenger, former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Chet Traylor.

Poll: Louisiana Loves Bobby Jindal -- And Offshore Drilling

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal

The new survey of Louisiana by Public Policy Polling (D) finds that despite the disaster created by the BP oil spill, the state's voters still overwhelmingly support offshore drilling.

The poll asked: "Do you support or oppose drilling for oil off the shore of Louisiana?" The answer was support 77%, oppose 12%. In addition, only 31% said that the spill made them less supportive of drilling, to 28% who said it made them more supportive, and 42% for whom it made no difference.

"People are always concerned with their economic livelihood," writes PPP president Dean Debnam. "In Louisiana the economy and jobs are clearly tied to the oil and gas industry. Louisianans seem more concerned about the closure of oil rigs than of beaches."

Browner Points Finger At BP
Appearing on Face The Nation, White House energy adviser Carol Browner placed the blame on BP for early inaccurate estimates of the size of the Gulf Coast oil spill. "It's important to understand that BP has a financial interest in what those flow rates are. They will ultimately pay a fine based on those rates," said Browner. When asked whether she thought the company lied about initial estimates, Browner replied: "The very, very first estimates came from BP. They had the footage of the plume. The government then did satellite imagery and we realized that those figures were not accurate."

BP's Dudley: Those Weren't Our Estimates
Also on Face The Nation, BP Managing Director Bob Dudley defended the company's performance. "The estimates from the well rates have never been BP estimates. They've been through the unified command center. The best way to estimate those early rates were from satellite picture," said Dudley. He later added: "The current estimates by the government are between 12 and 19,000 barrels a day. The precision on these estimates has always been low. We have designed the spill response for much, much higher rates."

Congressional Dems to Jindal: Oh, Now You Want Federal Help?

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R)

The financial costs of the massive Gulf Coast oil spill are just beginning to become a political issue, with Democrats in Washington reluctant to divvy out any more taxpayer funds in an election year, especially for states whose governors have been among the most vocal over the past year in blasting federal spending.

In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) has been a vocal critic of federal spending under President Obama, but as the state closest to the undersea leak, he already has requested various forms of federal disaster assistance. He's also anticipating the possibility that British Petroleum either won't, or won't have to under the law, foot the the full cost of all the damages associated with the spill.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) took a swipe at Jindal when I asked during a brief interview this week if Congress was considering any funding to add to what BP will do. "Well you know, here we go. You know, the governor of Louisiana says the federal government should stay out of the state's business," Menendez told me Tuesday night. Jindal's office said they would respond but haven't yet gotten back to me. We'll update if they do.

Dems To Celebrate Stimulus Anniversary By Slamming GOP Hypocrisy On Bragging About The Cash They Opposed

President Obama signed the $787 billion stimulus plan into law Feb. 17, 2009

Next week when President Obama marks the one-year anniversary of signing the stimulus bill into law, Democrats will showcase the Republicans who were against the Recovery Act funds, before they were for them being funneled to their home states.

TPMDC has learned the party will mount an orchestrated effort from the Democratic National Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to go after Republicans who voted against the$787 billion economic stimulus plan but take credit for its spending back home.

Obama signed the measure Feb. 17, 2009 with votes from just three Republicans (one of those GOPers, Sen. Arlen Specter, became a Democrat) but members of the opposing party have campaigned on stimulus projects.

A Democratic source told me the party will force both incumbents up for reelection in the fall and Republican challengers to say on the record if they support the stimulus plan, which the White House in tandem will showcase as having created jobs.

"Look for us to be all over this story," the source said.

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) is getting on the anti-ACORN bandwagon established by Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN), who is of course a potential presidential candidate. This is to say, Jindal is ending the non-existent state funding of the controversial group.

From the Times-Picayune:

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal issued an executive order to keep any state money from going to the controversy-wracked Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has its national headquarters in New Orleans.

According to the state's Division of Administration, no state agencies have existing contracts with ACORN.

Jindal Not Challenging Vitter -- But Not Praising Him, Either

Now this is odd. Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) has again ruled out running for Senate in 2010, which would involve challenging scandal-plagued GOP Sen. David Vitter in the primary -- but he's not giving any enthusiastic endorsements of Vitter, either.

"Well a couple of things, first (Sen. David) Vitter's going to have to make his case with the voters, just like every candidate does," Jindal said, when asked by a reporter about a possible candidacy. "There's been a lot of speculation. Let me answer your question very directly, I'm not running for the senate, I'm running for re-election as governor in 2011, but David's going have to make his case with the voters directly just like any other candidate's going to have to do that."

Now that's a strong vote of confidence.

Jindal As GOP Health Care Spokesman -- Look At His Record

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) has become a prominent critic of President Obama and the Democrats recently, appearing on TV and writing newspaper columns warning against a government takeover of health care. "When government bureaucracies drive the delivery of services -- in this case inserting themselves between health-care providers and their patients -- quality degradation will surely come," Jindal wrote in a recent column for the Wall Street Journal.

But underneath the air of expertise -- he's a former state health secretary -- it's important to consider that that there is a long-running ideological commitment here. The thing about Jindal is this: Over his public career, he has consistently opposed any expansion of government health care, and has even tried to cut, eliminate or partially-privatize existing programs.

For example, his budget plan this year calls for cuts to existing services; he used his line-item veto to force the closure of the New Orleans Adolescent Hospital; and he successfully opposed an increase in the state's relatively low cigarette taxes, which would have funded state healthcare.

And this also goes back to before he was governor, too.

Poll: Louisiana Voters Don't Want Jindal To Run For President, But He Would Carry The State

A new survey of Louisiana from Public Policy Polling (D) has some mixed news for Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal: A huge majority of Louisiana voters don't want him to run for President in 2012 -- but if he does run, he should expect to carry the state by a wide margin, anyway.

The numbers: Only 27% say he should run, to 61% against. Among Democrats this is 15%-78%, but even Republicans only favor it 43%-39%, and independents are against it 24%-62%.

However, Jindal would defeat President Obama for this red state's electoral votes, by a solid margin of 54%-40%. Sarah Palin would carry the state, too, leading Obama by 49%-42%.

Jindal Supporters Form Presidential Draft PAC

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that a group of Bobby Jindal supporters in Louisiana have set up their own PAC, called the Jindal For President Draft Council Inc., to urge the Louisiana Governor to run for President and to build up support for him across the country.

Rama Mohanty, one of the lead organizers, said that Jindal's people are not involved with the draft PAC, but they are aware of it. "They are supportive of what we are doing," said Mohanty.

Jindal spokesman Kyle Plotkin indicated differently, though. "The governor has said that he has the job he wants, and he hopes to be re-elected (in 2011) to continue to move Louisiana forward," Plotkin told the Times-Picayune. He added: "It's flattering, but the governor does not support this effort. This is a distraction from the critical issues that we face, and the governor will not be involved in any capacity."

Alaska GOP Senator Smacks Jindal: "Monitoring Volcanoes is Critically Important"

Bobby Jindal's denunciations of federal spending to monitor volcanoes is now attracting some serious critcism from a Republican Senator -- namely Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, whose state has been recently disrupted by a series of eruptions from Mount Redoubt.

"Recently there were some comments made about federal spending for volcano monitoring being wasteful," Murkowski said from the Senate floor, without naming Jindal directly. "I can assure you that monitoring volcanoes is critically important to the nation and especially to my home state of Alaska."

In Jindal's speech, he said: "While some of the projects in the bill make sense, their legislation is larded with wasteful spending. It includes ... $140 million for something called 'volcano monitoring.' Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, DC."

The massive eruptions from Mount Redoubt were serious enough to cancel all airport service in and out of Anchorage for several hours -- even though the city is about 100 miles away from the volcano. Memo to Bobby Jindal: "Volcano monitoring" in some parts of the country is not all that dissimilar from "hurricane monitoring" on the Gulf Coast.

DNC: Jindal Has Turned To Limbaugh As His New Speechwriter

"We understand that Governor Jindal has had some problems with public speaking lately, but turning to Rush Limbaugh to be your new speechwriter doesn't help. What we know has failed is the reflexive partisan politics of the past that Rush Limbaugh and his Republican party continue to be mired in. Rather than rooting for failure, we urge the Republican party to play a constructive role in moving the country forward and offer a budget proposal," said DNC National Press Secretary Hari Sevugan.

Republicans

Viguerie on Steele and Rush

Richard Viguerie is one of the founders of the modern conservative movement. He's not the player he once was but he still carries clout and I think actually makes a reasonable point about the current crisis of leadership in the GOP. Congressional Republicans haven't really seized the leadership mantle so it's been left to the likes of Steele and Rush. He just released this statement:

Broadcasters and commentators such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck and Michael Savage are seen as the de facto leaders of the Republican Party for a simple reason, Richard A. Viguerie said today: "It's because no one else is acting like a Republican leader."

"The 'Rushification' of the GOP is the natural and inevitable result of the fact that those who are supposed to provide leadership - Republican elected officials and party officers - are doing little to bring the party back," said Viguerie, chairman of ConservativeHQ.com.

"Nature abhors a vacuum, and there is no vacuum in nature as empty as the leadership of the Republican Party today."

Said Viguerie: "The GOP absolutely refuses to replace the Congressional leaders who helped get the party and the country into this mess. There are many Republican governors campaigning for the Obama 'stimulus' plan that is wrecking the economy and will push America deeper into socialism. Governor Jindal's speech was technocratic, without passion and toothless, and Michael Steele's foolish attack on Rush Limbaugh will, I'm sure, cost the party many millions in contributions."

The anger of grassroots conservatives continues unabated at the weak-kneed, spineless, earmark -loving Republicans.

In contrast to GOP officials, "Limbaugh and Hannity and most all of their conservative colleagues have something to say. They actually believe in something. They have the confidence of their convictions. They don't cower in fear of the President's popularity. They know that his popularity is built on the sand of false promises and false premises. Like Ronald Reagan facing the Soviet Union, they know how this story ends."

Even Jim Cramer of CNBC, who isn't a conservative, is providing more honest and outspoken leadership than the 'loyal opposition' about how Obama's policies are destroying the life savings of Americans.

"Americans are already beginning to realize that the new president is every bit as reckless and extreme as conservatives said he was," Viguerie said. "But the Republican Party can't get any traction, because the party leadership is as confused and clueless as the Obama administration."

Had Jindal not blown his speech or in Palin had been more out there during the last week--she chose to skip the National Governors Association meeting and the Conservative Political Action Conference--then she might have more of the mantle now. As it is, nature does abhor a vacuum.

Jindal Calls Limbaugh A "Great Leader" For Conservatives, Is Glad Steele Apologized

Check out this excerpt from Bobby Jindal's appearance last night on Larry King Live. Jindal was asked about Rush Limbaugh's declarations of wanting President Obama to fail. He not only couldn't bring himself to repudiate Rush's remarks, but also praised Rush as a "great leader for conservatives" -- and he said he was glad that Michael Steele had apologized for taking a shot at him:

King: All right, governor, here was Rush Limbaugh at this weekend's CPAC Conference. Watch.

Rush Limbaugh: What is so strange about being honest and saying I want Barack Obama to fail if his mission is to restructure and reform this country so that capitalism and individual liberty are not its foundation? Why would I want that to succeed?

King: Governor, do you think people are thinking about capitalism now or are they thinking about problems?

Jindal: Look, clearly, the American people are worried about paying their mortgages, keeping their jobs and paying their health care bills. I think Rush is a great leader for conservatives. I think he articulates what a lot of people are concerned about.

King: Do you want him [Obama] to fail?

Jindal: I don't want those policies to be adopted. I want my country to succeed, but I don't want policies to be adopted.

King: What if the policies work?

Jindal: Well, again...

King: What if they work?

Jindal: This is where we have a fundamental disagreement. I don't think it's going work ... to spend in excess of our revenues.

Jindal also responded to Michael Steele's recent flap about Limbaugh: "I'm glad he apologized. I think the chairman is a breath of fresh air for the party. As I said before, I think Rush is a leader for many conservatives and says things that people are concerned about."

Poll: GOP Field For 2012 Wide Open, Palin Has Small Lead

A newly-released CNN poll, conducted just over a week ago, asked Republicans their choice for the 2012 nomination: Sarah Palin 29%, Mike Huckabee 26%, Mitt Romney 21%, Bobby Jindal 9%, Someone Else 10%. The margin of error is ±4.5%.

Bear in mind this poll as done before this week's address to Congress by President Obama -- and thus before Jindal's response speech.

So who knows what impact the speech has had on Jindal's numbers. It raised his name recognition, certainly -- but it wasn't exactly a good speech, and he's been ridiculed on all the late-night comedy shows. That, and it obviously predates today's news that he completely lied during his speech about his experiences in Hurricane Katrina.

Then again, Rush Limbaugh has been rallying the Republican base against the liberal media's ganging up on Jindal, and also against the Republicans who have joined in.
