Christie Turned Down Offer To Deliver State Of The Union Response

Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ)

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) declined an offer to deliver the Republican rebuttal to the State of The Union address, according to a top Christie aide.

William Palatucci told the New Jersey Star-Ledger that Congressional Republicans had contacted the governor to see if he'd be interested in countering Obama's speech on Tuesday. Yet Palatucci said that Christie felt it would be inappropriate to address federal issues when his state has its own pressing problems.

Gillibrand: Giffords Making 'An Extraordinary Amount Of Progress'
Appearing on Meet The Press, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) that her friend Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) is making progress in her recovery from the shooting in Tucson, though she is not yet able to speak: "It's far too early for that. But she's making progress every day. She's using both sides of her body. She's able to breathe on her own. She's able to open her eyes and to show people she understands what she's hearing and seeing. So she's really--it's an extraordinary amount of progress for a woman who sustained such a horrific injury that she did."

Schumer: I Will Sit With Coburn At SOTU
Appearing on Meet The Press, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that he and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) will sit together at the State of the Union address: "My colleague Senator Mark Udall called for Democrats and Republicans to sit together at the State of the Union. I called up Tom after he did that, and he graciously agreed, we're going to sit together Wednesday night at the State of the Union, and we hope that many others will follow us. Now, that's symbolic, but maybe it just sets a tone and everything gets a little bit more civil."

PPP Poll: Obama Cruising Toward Huge 2012 Win In NJ

Pres. Barack Obama (D)

Bruce Springsteen may be the only person who could beat Barack Obama in a presidential matchup in New Jersey.

In a new PPP survey of the Garden State, the President crushes every Republican candidate polled against him, including the state's relatively popular Governor, Chris Christie. Obama led his challengers by an average of almost 20 points, with his most comfortable race coming against Sarah Palin, whom he led by 30 points.

Mitt Romney fared best--er, least poorly--among the GOP contenders, trailing Obama by 15 points, 52% to 37%. Obama held a 17-point margin against three other challengers--Mike Huckabee (53%-36%), Newt Gingrich (54%-37%), and Chris Christie (55%-38%). Against Sarah Palin, Obama held an even wider 59% to 29% lead.

NJ Gov. Chris Christie Stands By Absence From State During Storm

Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ)

Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ), who was on vacation in Disney World during last weeks' big snowstorm, returned to the state on Friday to defend his absence -- and to blast the local mayors' handling of the situation.

"I wouldn't change the decision even if I could do it right now," Christie told reporters on New Year's Eve, the Star Ledger reports. "I had a great five days with my children. I promised that." He also added that his wife Mary Pat told him to not "even think about" canceling the trip.

"I would have been doing the same thing here as I was there," Christie said. "I would not have been out driving a plow. I would be in a room somewhere on a telephone. That's exactly the same thing I was doing in Florida."
