The new Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll of Arkansas finds Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln ahead of her primary challenger, Lt. Gov. Bill Halter. But the gap has been closing -- and it's also possible that Halter could be the stronger Democrat for the general election.
The numbers: Lincoln 44%, Halter 31%, with a ±5% margin of error. In the previous poll, from late November and early December 2009 -- before Halter was officially in the race -- Lincoln led by 42%-26%.

Republican Rep. John Boozman, who is poised to officially enter the race soon, leads Lincoln by 56%-33%. A Republican candidate already in the race, state Senate Minority Leader Gilbert Baker, is ahead of Lincoln by 50%-35%.
Other Democrats were tested in place of Blanche Lincoln, and would still have a tough race. Boozman edges out Gov. Mike Beebe by 44%-43%, leads retired Gen. Wesley Clark by 51%-36%, and leads Rep. Mike Ross by 48%-37%. Baker ties Ross at 39%-39%, trails Beebe by 46%-38%, and leads Clark by 45%-39%.
PERMALINK | COMMENTS (44) | RECOMMEND RECOMMEND (0)A new Rasmussen poll suggests Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) is in serious danger heading into 2010, with her trailing all four Republican challengers.
State Sen. Kim Hendren is ahead of Lincoln by 47%-39%; state Sen. Gilbert Baker is ahead 51%-39%. Businessman Curtis Coleman is ahead 48%-38%, and businessman Tom Cox is ahead by an identical 48%-38%. The margin of error is ±4.5%.
From the pollster's analysis: "If the race remains a referendum on Lincoln and the performance of the Democratic leadership in Washington, it could remain a difficult race for the incumbent. If that happens, Lincoln will have to hope for a stronger economy and an improved environment for Democrats nationally."
