It was with a heavy heart when we told you that former Rep. Jim Traficant (D-OH), released last year from prison, was denied a position on the ballot for his old House seat.
But don't count Jim out quite yet. Traficant's allies yesterday filed an appeal, according to the Youngstown Vindicator. They're arguing that the elections boards that rejected his petition used "vastly overly stringent standards" when determining which signatures were valid.

Traficant, who was released from prison last fall after serving seven years for corruption, filed the paperwork in May to run for the 17th House district as an independent. But now, as the Youngstown Vindicator reports, the Trumbull County Board of Elections has disqualified Traficant. According to the board, Traficant only had 2,092 valid signatures -- 107 short of the required 2,199.

Traficant held the seat for nine terms before his expulsion from the House. But after filing, he told the Youngstown Vindicator that he may also file in the 6th district. The Ohio secretary of state's office is now reviewing elections law to see if that's legal.
"You never know with me. I might run in West Virginia," Traficant said.

The Democratic Change Commission, a group convened to re-examine the Democratic Party's nominating process, is proposing that super-delegates be stripped of their power over the presidential nomination, by requiring them to vote with the electoral majorities in their states -- effectively converting them into winner-take-all pledged delegates. "We need to show deference to what the party members in our state have done," said Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), a co-chair of the commission.
Obama To Receive Preliminary Report On Flight 253
President Obama will receive a preliminary report today on the Flight 253 attempted bombing, with recommendations on how to avoid a repeat of an incident in which an individual with suspected terrorist ties was able to board a plane.
Former Ohio Rep. Jim Traficant, who was recently released from prison following a seven-year sentence on corruption charges, announced today that he is circulating nomination petitions in three Ohio districts for the U.S. House.
Traficant, who was a Democrat when he was expelled from the House in 2002, will make a decision on whether to run -- and in what district, and under which party affiliation -- based on the response he receives. He plans to decide next month, the Youngstown Vindicator reports.
He did not say which districts he is considering. But his advisers have said in the past that they were looking at the 17th and 6th districts, which are both currently represented by Democrats.

White House senior adviser David Axelrod told the Associated Press that President Obama is considering a speech that would be more specific about health care reform, which could be delivered before the September 15 that the White House has given the Senate negotiators. "The ideas are all there on the table," said Axelrod. "Now we are in a new phase, and it's time to pull the strands of these together."
Obama's Day Ahead: Back on Vacation
President Obama will depart from the White House at 12:30 p.m. ET, and will head to Camp David to resume his vacation.
