White House: 'We Can't Wait' To Put Vets Back To Work

A soldier helps guard the Rumelia Oil Field in southern Iraq on April 2, 2003.

As part of its new "We Can't Wait" for Congress theme, the White House has announced an initiative to help veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars get back to work.

The latest effort, part of a comprehensive plan to transition veterans from the battlefield to the workplace, challenges community health centers around the country to hire 8,000 veterans over the next three years.

Bachmann Declares Husband Off Limits In Campaign -- After Slamming Michelle Obama In '08

Michelle Obama and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN)

Michele Bachmann isn't happy with the attention her husband, Marcus Bachmann, has been getting in the press lately over allegations his clinic practices gay conversion therapy. In fact, she thinks he should be kept out of the campaign entirely.

"I am extremely proud of my husband, I have tremendous respect for for him," Bachmann said at a luncheon in DC on Thursday. "I am running for the presidency of the United States. My husband is not running for the presidency. Neither are my children, neither is our business, neither are our foster children."

But Bachmann has a very different take when it comes to other candidates' spouses: She's repeatedly attacked Michelle Obama in the harshest terms and specifically challenged the press to join in on her condemnations.

Bachmann Blasts First Lady And 'Nanny State' -- For Promoting Breastfeeding

First Lady Michelle Obama and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN)

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), the national Tea Party star who is eyeing a possible run for President, really is opposing every initiative from the White House. In her latest comments, Bachmann slammed First Lady Michelle Obama's move as part of her physical fitness campaigns, plus decisions by the Obama administration proper, to promote breastfeeding.

The government has taken recent steps to promote breastfeeding, including a ruling last week by the Internal Revenue Service to declare breast pumps and other nursing supplies as medical tax deductions.

But this is one tax break that's not welcomed by Bachmann, as she said during an appearance Tuesday on the Laura Ingraham radio show.

"I've given birth to five babies, and I've breastfed every single one of these babies," Bachmann said. "To think that government has to go out and buy my breast pump for my babies, I mean, you wanna talk about the nanny state -- I think you just got the new definition of the nanny state."

Democrats Call On Michelle Obama To Help Push Early Voting (VIDEO)

First Lady Michelle Obama

The DNC is hoping First Lady Michelle Obama can drive Democrats to the polls before Election Day. The party is pushing Democrats to turn out early nationwide with a web initiative and video starring Obama.

Early voting has become a potential ray of sunshine in the Democrats' cloudy electoral forecast. Early results have shown Democrats turning out in decent numbers so far, giving the party and its supporters hope that it might upset the narrative of big GOP gains the polls that the media have pre-written this year.

With the new Obama video and accompanying RaiseYourVote website, Democrats appear to be hoping to build on their early vote momentum.

Tancredo: First Lady Wanted To Ban Christmas Artifacts At The White House

Tom Tancredo

Tom Tancredo isn't going away. The former congressman and one-time presidential candidate may have upended the Colorado gubernatorial race with his third-party run, but he's still not shy to air his controversial views on national issues. In a phone interview with TPM, Tancredo discussed the gubernatorial race, the Cordoba House project, and what he really fears about Obama. He also referenced a long-standing urban legend about the Obamas' supposed war on Christmas.

"I remember a little thing, like Ms. Obama saying she didn't want any Christian artifacts in the White House during Christmas time," Tancredo said. Another problem, Tancredo said, is "hosting Ramadan events there."

Tancredo's recitation of the urban myth about Michelle Obama disdaining Christmas is just one of several instance of Tancredo ascribing an otherness to the Obamas.

Obama: Republicans Want To Privatize Social Security, Haven't 'Learned Any Lessons' From Financial Crisis
In this weekend's YouTube address, President Obama attacked Republicans for wanting to privatize Social Security.

"I'd have thought, after being reminded how quickly the stock market can tumble, after seeing the wealth people worked a lifetime to earn wiped out in a matter of days, that no one would want to place bets with Social Security on Wall Street; that everyone would understand why we need to be prudent about investing the retirement money of tens of millions of Americans," said Obama. "But some Republican leaders in Congress don't seem to have learned any lessons from the past few years. They're pushing to make privatizing Social Security a key part of their legislative agenda if they win a majority in Congress this fall."

Obama: 'This Is What Health Care Reform Is Achieving'
In this weekend's YouTube address, President Obama promoted the benefits that he said the new health care reform law has already achieved.

"I've said before that implementing health insurance reform won't happen overnight, and it will require some tweaks and changes along the way. Ultimately, we'll have a system that provides more control for consumers, more accountability for insurance companies, and more affordable choices for uninsured Americans," said Obama. "But already, we are seeing how reform is improving the lives of millions of Americans. Already, we are watching small businesses learn that they will soon pay less for health care. We are seeing retirees realize they'll be able to keep their coverage and seniors realize they'll be able to afford their prescriptions. We're seeing consumers get a break from unfair rate hikes, patients get the care they need when they need it, and young adults get the security of knowing they can start off life with one less cost to worry about. At long last, this is what health care reform is achieving."

Marzipan Bo Obama Newest Addition To Traditional WH Holiday Gingerbread House

Reporters couldn't stop asking White House Pastry Chef Bill Yosses if holiday visitors take bites out of the gingerbread and white chocolate replica of the South Portico.

He confessed that in his three years of helping craft the traditional White House gingerbread house he sometimes sees little nibbles taken out of it.

But once he explained the process - letting more than 100 pounds of overcooked, crunchy gingerbread go stale, and making sure to dust the house in the weeks it sits in the State Dining Room - everyone realized it was better as a decoration than as a snack.

After First Lady Michelle Obama announced the theme of this year's White House Christmas, Yosses laid out in great detail for reporters how he made the home, from hand carving the white chocolate steps to shrinking a computer printout of Abraham Lincoln for the photo on the wall in the dollhouse-sized state dining room replica.

Yosses and his team spent six weeks crafting and designing the gingerbread house, which has new additions this year with a new First Family at the helm.

A White House Christmas: 'Reflect, Rejoice, Renew'

First Lady Michelle Obama

The theme of this year's White House Christmas is "Reflect, rejoice, and renew" and it's reflected in the refurbished ornaments festooned on the 18-foot tall White House Christmas tree.

First Lady Michelle Obama introduced the holiday decorations, which were inspired by the White House's "residential, warm atmosphere," her office said.

The 800 ornaments on display throughout the house and on the Christmas tree are from past administrations. They were sent out to communities to be personalized - with decopage and beading to reflect local landmarks and flavor.

The first lady said her favorite depicted Chicago's Lincoln Park zoo. The decorations included "natural materials" such as flowers, berries and dried roots from the White House kitchen garden.

Obama also announced a new "Feed a neighbor" initiative via Serve.gov to help fight hunger across the country.

The program would allow citizens to volunteer to help homebound seniors and start community gardens.

Obama encouraged giving to Toys for Tots and said she would personally deliver the toys collected at the White House to Quantico later this month.

She thanked the volunteers who put in more than 3,000 hours to flock the home, saying their work "has really transformed the White House." She noted that more than 50,000 visitors would take tours this season.
