Steele Not Ready To Say 'This Portends Great Things For The GOP Next Year'

RNC chair Michale Steele is excited about last night's victories in New Jersey and Virginia, but he said on CNN this morning that he's not ready to say they mean the GOP is back on track for big wins in 2010.

"I don't know yet," he said. "There's going to be more analysis to come."

"I'm not so quick to say 'Oh yes this portends great things for the GOP next year,'" Steele added. "We still have a lot to do."

People Who Invest In Glass Houses...

Gov. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) and Former US Attorney Chris Christie (R)

New Jersey politics sure does have its comedic ups and downs.

Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) was hit by the Star-Ledger's report over the weekend that he has a stake in a hedge fund, which may have a corporate connection to a casino -- thus creating a conflict with a law that forbids state officials from owning a stake in casinos. His Republican opponent, Chris Christie, was quick to pounce on it, calling it a "real possibility of law breaking" and a "colossal error in judgment."

But now the Star-Ledger has taken a look at Christie's finances -- and it turns out that when he was U.S. Attorney, he owned stock in a company that his office was investigating. "The way my investments work, I had no authority to order either the buying or the selling of any particular stock in that fund," Christie said. "I was not making the decision to buy or the decision to sell."

New Christie Ad: Corzine's Attacks On Mammogram Coverage "Deceitful" And "Awful"

Republican former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie has a new ad in the New Jersey gubernatorial race, firing back at an ad by Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine that accused Christie of wanting to allow insurance companies to drop mammogram coverage for women. The ad was based on Christie's support of cheaper, mandate-free health insurance policies.

In the new ad, Christie talks about his own family experience, how his mother battled breast cancer that was detected early through a mammogram. "So the idea that somebody who was able to keep their mother for an extra twenty years would ever deny another woman in this state the opportunity to get a mammogram is just so deceitful," Christie says. "It is awful for the Governor to desperately hold onto power by scaring people."

Corzine: I Wish The Economy Had Turned Around Six Months Ago

Former Gov. Jon Corzine (D-NJ)

Gov. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) is all too aware of the effect that the economy has had on his re-election fight this fall, in which he's trailing in the polls.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Corzine spoke last night at Rider University, where he predicted that the economy will recover. "I believe we need to take a positive view that we will turn this ship, this economic ship," he said.

However, he later added: "I wish it had turned six months ago. It would have made it a lot easier to run for reelection."

Corzine Ad: Christie "Threw His Weight Around" To Get Out Of Trouble In Traffic Incidents

The latest ad from Gov. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) openly accuses his Republican opponent, former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie, of pulling rank in order to get out of serious trouble in his multiple traffic violations -- and quite possibly takes a jab at Christie's weight.

"If you drove the wrong way down a one-way street, causing an accident and putting the victim in a trauma center, would you get away without a ticket? Chris Christie did," the announcer says. "If you were caught speeding in an unregistered car- would you get away without points? Chris Christie did."

"In both cases, Christie threw his weight around as US Attorney and got off easy," the announcer adds, later adding a slogan that's popped up lately in Corzine's ads: "Chris Christie. One set of rules for himself. Another for everyone else."

The folks at Real Clear Politics think the line about how Christie "threw his weight around" is an obvious reference to Christie's personal bulk. Requests for comment to the Corzine and Christie camps were not immediately returned.

Late Update: Corzine campaign communications director Sean Darcy has just told us that this is not a reference to Christie's weight. "No," said Darcy in an e-mail.

More Mudslinging In New Jersey Over Financial Connections, And Christie Hits Back On "Driving" Attacks

Gov. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) and Former US Attorney Chris Christie (R)

The mud is continuing to fly in the New Jersey gubernatorial race. During this round, it's the Republicans throwing it at Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine, while also firing back at Dem attacks over GOP nominee Chris Christie's very spotty driving record.

The Star-Ledger reported that Corzine may indirectly have a financial interest in casinos, though even here it's not all that solid. The issue is that Corzine has hedge fund holdings in a company that also own casinos -- and it's against the law in New Jersey for state officials to have business relationships with casino operators.

The hedge fund's parent company says that the casino operations and the hedge fund are managed "totally independently," though the Ledger points out that they share the same address and some of the same staff. The Corzine camp says that Corzine has fully reported his assets in the hedge fund, and that he is not in violation of any laws.
