Conservatives Hope To Repeal Obamacare Using A Tactic They Once Decried

Jim DeMint

Though the official GOP push to repeal the health care law has slowed since Republicans took power in January, the right flank of the House and Senate haven't quieted down at all. And on Wednesday, several of them gathered outside the Capitol with the anti-reform group "Repeal It Now" in front of a stack of boxes which they claim contained 1,600,000 signed petitions demanding the entire law be repealed.

But though the members are pursuing complete -- not partial -- repeal of the law as soon as possible, they acknowledged they may have to wait until next Congress to make any headway. That's when they might have enough power to use some of the same procedural tools Democrats used to pass the bill.

"Turnabout's fair play," said Rep. Steve King (R-IA).

Tacking Right: How John Boehner Convinced Republicans To Back His Debt Limit Plan

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH)

After his members dealt him a stunning defeat Thursday, and forced him, for the second time to pull and amend his plan to raise the debt limit, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has figured a way out.

Once-reluctant Republicans -- including Reps. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Jeff Landry (R-LA), and Phil Gingrey (R-GA) -- streamed out of a House GOP caucus meeting Friday morning to announce they'd changed their minds, and will now support Boehner's bill.

House Republican: Health Care Panel Means Patients 'Going To Die'

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA)

A House Republican says a Medicare board created by the health care law will kill people.

Reprising the "death panel" meme that cast a pall over the health care reform debate in 2009, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) charged Wednesday that the Independent Payment Advisory Board -- a panel charged with reducing growth in Medicare spending -- will cause patients to die.

"[U]nder this IPAB we described that the Democrats put in Obamacare, where a bunch of bureaucrats decide whether you get care, such as continuing on dialysis or cancer chemotherapy, I guarantee you when you withdraw that the patient is going to die," Gingrey said. "It's rationing."

Georgia Republican Tries To Explain How Abortion Rider Is About Jobs (VIDEO)

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA)

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) says that Republican freshmen in the House want Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) to stick to his guns in budget negotiations ahead of the impending government shutdown. "This is all about jobs," Gingrey said, adding that it was about principle and not politics.

House Tea Party Caucus Members Requested Over $1 Billion In Earmarks

Hmm, something seems odd about the House Tea Party Caucus -- the group founded to promote cuts in government spending. As National Journal reports, a new study finds that the caucus' 52 members requested a total of more than $1 billion in this past Congress.

According to a Hotline review of records compiled by Citizens Against Government Waste, the 52 members of the caucus, which pledges to cut spending and reduce the size of government, requested a total of 764 earmarks valued at $1,049,783,150 during Fiscal Year 2010, the last year for which records are available.

"It's disturbing to see the Tea Party Caucus requested that much in earmarks. This is their time to put up or shut up, to be blunt," said David Williams, vice president for policy at Citizens Against Government Waste. "There's going to be a huge backlash if they continue to request earmarks."

Stimulus

Dems To Celebrate Stimulus Anniversary By Slamming GOP Hypocrisy On Bragging About The Cash They Opposed

President Obama signed the $787 billion stimulus plan into law Feb. 17, 2009

Next week when President Obama marks the one-year anniversary of signing the stimulus bill into law, Democrats will showcase the Republicans who were against the Recovery Act funds, before they were for them being funneled to their home states.

TPMDC has learned the party will mount an orchestrated effort from the Democratic National Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to go after Republicans who voted against the$787 billion economic stimulus plan but take credit for its spending back home.

Obama signed the measure Feb. 17, 2009 with votes from just three Republicans (one of those GOPers, Sen. Arlen Specter, became a Democrat) but members of the opposing party have campaigned on stimulus projects.

A Democratic source told me the party will force both incumbents up for reelection in the fall and Republican challengers to say on the record if they support the stimulus plan, which the White House in tandem will showcase as having created jobs.

"Look for us to be all over this story," the source said.

Gingrey: Obama Should Promise To Veto Public Option or Co-Op

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA), a leading public spokesman for House conservatives, appeared on MSNBC today and made a striking recommendation: That not only should President Obama admit defeat and no longer back a public option or even a co-op -- but he should personally kill it by promising a veto if Congress were to pass it.

"I think what the President ought to do is say, look, you know, I understand, we've heard the people," said Gingrey. "We let the Congress draft a bill, both in the House and the Senate, at least through committee, and present it to the American public. They are rejecting the public option. Let's don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Let's remove the public option, and also anything that smacks of a public option, like a co-op. And indeed, I will veto that if it comes to my desk with that in there. And let's go ahead and try to pass a good bill that we can all agree on."

GOP Reps Team With Lobbyists To Mislead Protesters About Health Care Reform

Yesterday, Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) claimed that recent town hall disruptions are an example of democracy in action--people voicing their concerns about health care reform will really mean.

That may very well be--but things might be different if people such as Price himself weren't misleading protest organizers, and scaring voters, about what's in the bill.
