Chicago Sun-Times: Rahm Wanted Blago To Appoint County Commish As Seat-Warmer

Fmr. Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-IL) and WH Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel

The Chicago Sun-Times reports today that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel asked then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich to appoint a Cook County commissioner to Emanuel's House seat. Blagojevich claims in a new book that Emanuel wanted to be able to run again in 2010 or 2012.

But House members, unlike senators, can never be appointed. Instead, they must be elected -- it's written into the Constitution.

So how could it be that Emanuel -- who served in the House for six years and was chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee -- didn't know that?

Burris Now Won't Rule Out Running For Senate In 2010

Sen. Roland Burris (D-IL), who last month said he won't run for his Senate seat in 2010, seems to have changed his tune.

"You never say never," he told ABC News.

"What I'm still hearing," Burris said, is "people from all over the country and they are saying, 'Don't give up that seat.'"

Burris was appointed by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was thrown out after allegedly trying to sell the seat vacated by President Obama.

Burris has raised very little money so far, and polls consistently show him losing the Democratic primary.

Blago Makes Cameo In Musical About Himself

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich made a special public appearance over the weekend -- at the Second City production about himself, "Rod Blagojevich, Superstar":

"What they say to you before you go out on stage I thought is very interesting and that is 'we got your back,'" Blagojevich told the audience. "I've been in politics and that's not anything anybody said to me."

This sort of thing does have a precedent. Former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating would often attend performances of a comedic opera about himself, which was a tribute both to his policies and his monumental ego and vanity -- and he'd even get up and dance during the curtain call.

Judge Rules That Blago May Not Leave Country To Be On Reality Show

In yet another setback for former Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-IL), U.S. District Court Judge James Zagel has just ruled that Blago is not allowed to travel to Costa Rica to appear on a Survivor-style reality show for celebrities.

Blago would have needed to this special permission to leave the country during a time when he is under indictment. The Chicago Sun-Times quotes the judge as saying: "I don't think this defendant in all honesty ... fully understands the position he finds himself in."

Besides, this whole thing seemed pretty superfluous: Blago already starred on a really fun reality show.
