How Robin Roberts Landed The Obama Interview

ABC's Robin Roberts

The White House called ABC News on Tuesday to ask about Robin Roberts' schedule. The Good Morning America co-host works a pre-dawn to midday schedule during the week as part of the usual network morning show routine. But the White House wanted something far from routine: a sitdown interview between her and the President the next day. The questions would be of her choosing, but everyone knew the focus would be same-sex marriage.

"It doesn't take a huge leap to figure it out," a source at ABC told TPM.

After Vice President Joe Biden came out for gay marriage on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday, and Education Secretary Arne Duncan followed suit on Monday, White House press secretary Jay Carney was grilled during Tuesday's press briefing on whether President Obama's own position on the issue had changed.

Gay Marriage

Poll: Majority Supports Legal Recognition For Same-Sex Marriage

As Republicans and President Obama square off over the Defense of Marriage Act, a new CNN poll shows that a small majority of Americans now support legal recognition for same sex marriages.

In the poll, 51% of adult Americans said they thought same sex marriages should be recognized by law, while 47% said they should not. That's a significant reversal from the same poll two years ago when Americans opposed same sex marriage by a 10-point spread, with 44% in favor and 54% against.

It's the second time in as many months that a pollster has for the first time found majority support for legalizing same sex marriage. In March, a Washington Post/ABC News poll showed that 53% of adults supported legalizing same sex marriage, while 44% opposed it.

Ann Coulter doesn't mince words. And even when speaking to a gay conservative organization, GOProud, at their inaugural Homocon party on Saturday night, she apparently wasn't willing to start.

After a series of jokes about conservative that sounded -- and were received -- more like a stand-up act then a political speech, Coulter told the assembled (and predominantly wealthy) conservative gay crowd why they should oppose same sex marriage, adding, "I should warn you: I've never failed to talk gays out of gay marriage."

And then she did.

Proposition 8

Appeals Court Blocks Same Sex Marriages Pending Prop 8 Appeal

A woman celebrates the ruling against Prop 8 in California.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed this afternoon to stay same sex marriages in California pending Prop 8 proponents' appeal of the decision by Judge Vaughn Walker that barring same sex couples from getting married is unconstitutional. Last week, Walker himself issued a stay of his own order pending this decision by the appeals court -- though, without the action of the court today, same sex marriages could have resumed in California on Wednesday.
